The Culture of Fire on Southern Africa on Example of Lesotho and Madagascar
An Interim Report of the Working Group Forest Technology (IFFN No. 23 - December 2000, p. 50-54) Preface
At the stage of writing this report two countries returned the questionnaires which was circulated to GTZ projects in Southern Africa. Thus, this report is restricted to Lesotho and Madagascar (50% of the island) and a short description for Kenya. Introduction The discussion about pros and cons of fire has and is continuing over the decades and still there is no general answer. One of the difficulties for this is, which indicators should be used for evaluation (forest area, growing rate, income etc.), perhaps biodiversity is the best indicator. Concerning this, Pyne (1995) wrote aptly: "… Biodiversity can be lost as surely through fire exclusion as through fire excess". The contemporary world fire situation is changing dramatically. Two elements have worked to upset any systems. One is climate, the other humanity. The trends are alarming; fire, climate and humanity have begun to interact in new ways. The rapid growth rate of population in the African countries increases dramatically the frequency of fire. This is not a question of a natural process but it is anthropogenic interference into nature. New fire climax vegetation will be created and frequently the degeneration chain will start into progress, especially where the grassland is diminishing.

Lesotho People Back to Top The population of Lesotho (2001 estimate) is 2,177,062. The overall population density is 72 persons per sq km (186 per sq mi). The population was growing at 1.5 percent a year in 2001. While the growth rate was lower than in many African countries, it was still high enough to place a burden on Lesotho’s limited resources. Many people, particularly men, reside outside the country for a portion of each year working as laborers. Life expectancy at birth was 50 years for women and 48 years for men. The only city of significant size in Lesotho is Maseru. The Sotho speak Sotho, a Bantu language of the Niger-Congo language family; they were originally united by a common loyalty to the royal house of Mshweshwe (Moshoeshoe), of the Moketeli branch of the Kwena lineage. Internally, divisions among different chiefdoms—and within the royal lineage itself—have had political significance, but externally the sense of Sotho nationhood and cultural unity remains strong. Both Sotho and English are official languages in the country; Zulu is spoken by a small but significant minority of Zulu. In addition, there are a few thousand nationals of Asian or mixed descent. The small European community is dominated by expatriate teachers, missionaries, aid workers, technicians, and development advisers.

Culture as fashion: the blanket and the hat
In a region of Africa where traditional dress
has all but died out, Lesotho stands out as the exception. It's true that the mokorotlo
(the Sotho traditional hat) is not widely worn these days, but you still occasionally see its distinctive cone and bobble in Lesotho, and in South Africa it is popular with Sotho migrant workers as a badge of ethnic distinction. Ironically, miners' hard-hats are sported in Lesotho as a fashion item, often by younger brothers of Basotho men working in the South African mines. Modelled on the shape of the Qiloane Mountain near Thaba Bosiu, and made of woven straw, the mokorotlo has become the standard Sotho souvenir, sold in every craft shop, usually for M25 or less.

Sotho Sounds' tour of Britain was highly successful A group of shepherds from Lesotho are making an impact in the musical world with their creation of 'Junk funk' - songs performed on instruments made from rubbish.
With recycled material including disused oil cans, car tyres, twigs and a kitchen sink, the band has managed to put together two fiddles, a bass guitar of sorts - and a drum. "I got some branches from a tree because I needed two sticks to support the wire and the sink that I had cut up," drummer Tumelo Mpokoane told BBC World Service's Focus On Africa magazine. "After that, I found the tube of a tyre. So before I made the actual drum, I found someone to help me stretch the tube over the drum, while I tied the tube to the drum with wire. "Afterwards, I found a car tyre and cut it for my drumsticks. If I did not use the sticks made from tyre, the drum would not have had a good sound." Self-taught The band members are shepherds from Malealea village on Lesotho's Maluti Mountains. They are self-taught musicians, reminiscent of what East Africans call jua kali - informal artisans who earn their living by working in the open under the hot sun.

LESOTHO: Culture Undermines Prevention Efforts in Lesotho UN Integrated Regional Information Networks - September 16, 2003 Social and cultural norms and traditions in Lesotho are hampering efforts to combat the rising HIV/AIDS epidemic, government officials told IRIN. Mathoriso Monaheng, Director of Administration at the Lesotho AIDS Programme Co-ordinating Agency (LAPCA), said the first case of HIV/AIDS was detected in Lesotho in 1986, when "a medical practitioner from East Africa, working in the Mokhotlong district, about 8 hours drive from [the capital] Maseru," was diagnosed as HIV-positive. "As a result, everybody concluded that it was a disease for the foreigner. It was perceived to be a disease for Makwerekwere [a derogative term for foreign Africans]." Ignorance about HIV/AIDS has been a major stumbling block for efforts at halting the spread of the disease, she said. Monaheng used as an example of this the belief among some that condom's were responsible for the spread of the disease.

For me this has been a respect for, the links which exist in African culture between the physical world and "the Spirit World’, the past and the present, the living and the dead. For the people of Lesotho’s Maluti Mountains these links are everywhere. The boundary between here and there or then and now is elastic. Dangers from enemies alive and dead abound, supernatural creatures wield awesome powers. Reality is in a state of flux, but there are advantages, love, respect and support, span the chasm of death and continue beyond the grave in a way that we in "The Developed World" may have difficulty grasping. The dead do not leave but simply pass to another dimension, invisible yet present. Did these links ever exist for us?
