How big is the leprosy problem
At this moment, leprosy is still one of the major health problems in many developing countries. At the beginning of 1998 over 800,000 patients were registered, while in the year before almost 700,000 new cases were detected. It is estimated that in total there are over one million cases in the world, most of them in South-East Asia, Africa and Latin America. About 91 % of all cases can be found in only 8 countries: India, Madagascar, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and Nigeria. How big is the leprosy problem What is leprosy? Leprosy
What is leprosy?
Leprosy is a bacterial disease of the skin and nervous system caused by Mycobacterium leprae . The two main types of leprosy are called lepromatous and tuberculoid . Tuberculoid leprosy is not related to tuberculosis. Who gets leprosy? Leprosy is usually found in South Asia, Southeast Asia, tropical Africa and some areas of Latin America. Although it is occasionally found in the southern part of the United States, most persons diagnosed with leprosy in this country are immigrants or refugees who were infected in their native countries. What are the symptoms of leprosy? In lepromatous leprosy, the skin lesions are many and widespread. Infection in the nose may cause crusting, bleeding and blockage; infection in the eye may cause inflammation of the iris and cornea. In tuberculoid leprosy, the skin lesions are fewer and have little or no feeling. There may also be numbness in the hands, feet or other parts of the body. Lepromatous leprosy is much more contagious than tuberculoid leprosy. How soon after exposure do symptoms appear?

lep'-er, lep'-ro-si (tsara`ath; lepra): A slowly progressing and intractable disease characterized by subcutaneous nodules (Hebrew se'eth; Septuagint oule; the King James Version "rising"), scabs or cuticular crusts (Hebrew cappachath; Septuagint semasia) and white shining spots appearing to be deeper than the skin (Hebrew bahereth; Septuagint telaugema). Other signs are
    (1) that the hairs of the affected part turn white and
    (2) that later there is a growth of "quick raw flesh."
This disease in an especial manner rendered its victims unclean; even contact with a leper defiled whoever touched him, so while the cure of other diseases is called healing, that of leprosy is called cleansing (except in the case of Miriam ( Nu 12:13 ) and that of the Samaritan ( Lu 17:15 ) where the word "heal" is used in reference to leprosy). The disease is described in the Papyrus Ebers as ukhedu (the Coptic name for leprosy is tseht). It is also mentioned in ancient Indian and Japanese history. Hippocrates calls it "the Phoenician disease," and Galen names it "elephantiasis." In Europe it was little known until imported by the returning soldiers of Pompey's army after his Syrian campaign in 61 BC; but after that date it is described by Soranus, Aretaeus and other classic authors.

    LEPROSY
Leprosy is a chronic, communicable disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae
    • The clinical spectrum of disease reflects the following:
      • bacterial proliferation and accumulation at the site of infection
      • the immunological response
      • peripheral neuritis
    • Peripheral nerves, skin and mucous membranes are affected- M. leprae only grows on the colder surfaces of the body
    • Leprosy is rarely an immediate cause of death
    Incidence
    • Leprosy occurs predominantly in South-East Asia, but also in Africa and the Americas
    • There were about 1 million active cases world-wide in 1997, however, about 2 million people have irreversible deformities due leprosy
    • Each year about 600 000 people are diagnosed as having leprosy
    • The incidence is 2:1 males to females, although in Africa, it is 1:1
    Incubation Period
    • Leprosy can occur in a few weeks following exposure, however, cases developing 30 years after exposure have been described
    Transmission
    • M. leprae is not highly infectious
    • Transmission is more common among household contacts
    • Transmission is believed to occur through inhalation of infectious organisms
    • Transmission through insect bites and inoculation through broken (or intact) skin have not been excluded
    • Infectious people are thought to shed the organism from the nasal mucous membranes, especially if there is ulceration

At that time, the Grand Magistry of the Sovereign Hospitaller Order of Malta was offered the opportunity to demonstrate its multisecular hospitaller activities and created in Geneva the International Committee of the Order of Malta for Leprosy Relief (CIOMAL) in conjunction with the World Health Organisation ( WHO ) which laid down the foundations for a vast program which expressed itself in the ambitious goal of "Health for all by the year 2000" As a member of the International Federation of organisations fighting against leprosy (ILEP), the aims of CIOMAL are as follow :

    The Leprosy of Unionism
    By Dr. Theodore Graebner
(See "NOTE" at end of article) In all the catalog of diseases there is no more awful scourge than leprosy. True leprosy is incurable. In Bible-times the lepers were considered, in a special sense, unclean. They were shut out from the temple, the synagogues, and to a large extent from the social life of their fellow-beings. Their lot was truly pitiable. The tubercular blotches on the skin, soon covering the cheeks, the nose, the lips, and the forehead; then the ulcers in the mouth, followed soon by the tubercles on the face, encrusted with discharge; the falling out of the eyebrows, the ulceration of feet and hands, the progressive loss of fingers and toes, then of arms and limbs made leprosy the most dreaded of all diseases. It ended usually by the onset of tuberculosis, or led to mental decay, idiocy, coma, and death. There is a spiritual leprosy. We commonly call it unionism. Unionism is a diseased condition of the church. And it is a fatal disease. It ends in spiritual tuberculosis or a state of coma, the precursor of spiritual death. . . Moreover, and this makes the present subject so vital - we all have within us the germs of unionism. (NOTE: Unionism is church fellowship without unity in doctrine and practice.)

DEALING WITH THE LEPROSY OF LIFE
by Ray C. Stedman Last Sunday we interrupted our series in Leviticus to meditate on the Christmas theme. But now we return to it to look into the twelfth and thirteenth chapters of this great book. In the present section we are seeing that God has provided standards and guidelines by which we may avoid the pitfalls, the traps, and the snares of life with all the consequent heartbreak and hurt and remorse that these can bring. I was with my family and relatives up in the snow over the holidays. My nephew and I were sitting by the fire one day. I asked him, "You're fourteen now, aren't you? How does it feel?" He said, "Well, you know, I wish I could go back and live it all over again, and do it right this time!" I sympathized with him. Anyone who feels that way at fourteen is going to feel it a lot more at forty-one or fifty-one. But this is why God has given us this very practical section. It is in order that we might understand how to handle life. I have talked with several people in the past few weeks who were involved in deeply hurtful experiences. In studying through this passage I have been struck by the fact that each of them could have avoided these disasters had they known and understood the principles in these chapters. So let's look at them together. You remember that in Chapter 11, which introduced this section, we saw God's concern for what his people ate. We saw that there was both clean and unclean food, harmless food and harmful food. Though this had an application in the physical realm regarding which animals the Israelites could eat, and though some of it was for health purposes, nevertheless the primary reason for these distinctions is to teach us how to choose food for the soul the concepts and ideas which we accept and by which we live, by which we take on our characteristics of personality and temperament.
