    Lessons from Prevention Research*
The principles listed below are the result of long-term research studies on the origins of drug abuse behaviors and the common elements of effective prevention programs. These principles were developed to help prevention practitioners use the results of prevention research to address drug use among children and adolescents in communities across the country. Parents, educators, and community leaders can use these principles to help guide their thinking, planning, selection, and delivery of drug abuse prevention programs at the community level.
Prevention programs are generally designed for use in a particular setting, such as at home, at school, or within the community, but can be adapted for use in several settings. In addition, programs are also designed with the intended audience in mind: for everyone in the population, for those at greater risk, and for those already involved with drugs or other problem behaviors. Some programs can be geared for more than one audience.
Principle 1 - Prevention programs should enhance protective factors and reverse or reduce risk factors (Hawkins et al. 2002).

Here are answers to some commonly asked questions that may help to clarify the public defender's role in the larger context of the legal and criminal justice system. Although public defenders are the main form of legal representation for poor or indigent defendants, there are other types of public legal assistance, which is why some statistics include the term "or other publicly funded counsel." The source of this data is the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Statistics, unless otherwise noted.
What proportion of defendants actually use public defenders?
In 1998, roughly 66 percent (two-thirds) of all federal felony defendants were represented by public defenders or other publicly funded counsel. At the county level, in 1996, 82 percent of felony defendants in the 75 most populous counties used public defenders.
How much money is spent to provide defense to those who cannot afford a lawyer?
In 1999, in the nation's 100 most populous counties, an estimated $1.2 billion was spent to provide defense to those who could not afford to hire their own legal counsel. That $1.2 billion makes up roughly 3 percent of the counties' total criminal justice expenditures, which include police, judicial services and corrections systems. In 2001, prosecutors' offices in districts with populations of half million or more across the United States had a combined budget of $2.9 billion and a staff size of 234 employees. In 1999*, public defender programs in the 100 most populous counties had a total budget of $1.2 billion and a median staff size of 92 employees.

PREAMBLE The Section on Clinical Psychology of the Canadian Psychological Association has identified a need to define the skills, activities, and training of clinical psychologists. It is believed that such a definition will facilitate the development of the field in several ways. First, a definition will enable advocacy efforts within the profession by identifying training requirements and providing a platform to discuss strategies for maintaining/improving competency, autonomy, etc. Second, a definition of clinical psychology may stimulate discussion with other professional psychology groups, and, in this way, facilitate the development of criteria for specialty designation, a current issue for professional psychology. Third, a definition will aid in public education. An all-too-often heard comment regarding clinical psychology from non-psychologists is that they are unaware of our training, skills, and value.

Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing Download an Application Overview: The School of Nursing offers a curriculum leading to the degree of Master of Science in Nursing. The program of study prepares students for roles in advanced nursing practice. The program requires research, professional and clinical cores, and a selected advanced practice area. Applicants are admitted for either full-time or part-time study and can begin in fall or spring. With psychiatric mental health advanced practice skills, graduates can independently manage the mental health care needs of clients by functioning as psychotherapists and case managers in a variety of public, private, community, inpatient, and collaborative practice settings, and as consultants for hospitals and community organizations.  An emphasis on the interaction and integration of common mental and physical health problems gives the student an evidence-based framework for comprehensive mental health care. The curriculum includes core courses in advanced practice roles, research, pathophysiology and pharmacotherapeutics. The specialty area focuses on psychiatric mental health diagnostic reasoning, psychopharmacology, individual, group and family psychotherapies and policy, ethical and legal frameworks applied to the primary mental health care of underserved populations. Curricular emphasis on cultural competence and sensitivity challenges students’ assumptions and value judgments, and promotes critical analysis of how racial and cultural biases in psychiatric diagnosis have led to disparities in care.

    Clinical research - ethical issues
    Updated: Jul 16, 2002
    The need for clinical research
A range of health-related research is essential, to develop new technologies and to find out how effective methods of treatment and prevention can best be used in different settings. It is equally important to understand factors that influence people’s health and what can be done to improve it, for example, by changing behaviour or public policy. Sooner or later, this research has to involve human beings. This raises ethical issues that need to be discussed whenever research is planned or carried out, by a range of people including but not limited to the researchers themselves.

    CORE COURSES CRIMINAL JUSTICE POLICY
The course examines the history and current development of criminal justice policy in England and Wales, concentrating on policing, the trial process, sentencing, imprisonment and alternatives to imprisonment. It will look at the problems inherent in surveying and recording crime and at the position of the victim. It will then turn to a consideration of the role of the trial process and the aims and functions of sentencing. It will deal with the nature of prison regimes and their reform and the uses of alternative forms of sanctions.
This is an advanced course in criminology and deviancy theory focusing on contemporary work in the United Kingdom, United States and Continental Europe. It begins with an overview of the main theoretical perspectives of 19th and 20th century criminology as a basis for the analysis of post-war and contemporary approaches. These perspectives will be analysed in detail not only in terms of the evolution of criminological theory but also in the context of their political, social and cultural setting. The practical and policy implications of contemporary criminological research will also be stressed.
OPTIONAL COURSES Students choose two options. Not all are available in any one year.
