One of the biggest trends I've noticed in the last year is the rapid increase of state Web sites expanding their offerings. It wasn't that long ago that the
average state Web site was a hearty welcome from the governor (audio files optional), a few pictures, a phone book, and that's it.
But that's changed. Now state Web sites offer everything from databases of licensed professionals to health department information on restaurant. For the
next seven weeks we'll go on a tour of United States' Web sites and take a look at some highlights. Let's get started, shall we? Onward to Alabama!

ABSTRACT : An update on the implications of AIDS [acquired immune deficiency syndrome] and HIV [human immunodeficiency virus] infections for mental health practitioners. The chapter discusses new research, ethical responsibilities, and legal considerations for practitioners; denial, delay, and distortion; test reliability, risk factors, and risk groups; general principles of counseling those people who have AIDs or who are or might be HIV-positive; suicide, the dilemma of the right to die, and foregoing life-sustaining interventions; neuropsychological aspects of AIDS and HIV infections; is there a legal duty to protect or warn third parties; and education and prevention. No therapist can ethically ignore the challenge that the AIDS virus has thrust upon us. A few stark statistics only hint at the tragic dimensions of this disease. At the time we are writing this article, AIDS is the leading cause of death for men age 25-45 and women age 25-34 in New York City; it is the leading cause of death in the U.S. for people with hemophilia and for people who are intravenous (IV) drug users (Institute of Medicine/National Academy of Sciences/Nichols, 1989). The San Francisco Department of Public Health estimates that half of all gay and bisexual men in San Francisco are infected with the AIDS virus (Schochet, 1989). A recent study showed that almost 2% of babies born in New York City had HIV antibodies, indicating that their mothers are infected with HIV (Lambert, 1988).

Not too long ago the typical sources for statistics on a specific topic were those cited in books or journal articles on that topic. Sometimes the authors presented statistics gathered as a result of their own research while at other times they provided statistics gleaned from other sources. Because of the time involved in getting books and articles to press, it was not unusual for students especially to rely on what were often dated statistics. Today there is less justification for term papers and other research projects to use anything other than the most current data on particular topics. Instead on relying on the national murder or rape rate provided in your three-year-old text book or a five-year-old journal article, go directly to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report online and get the most current data. Get crime and prison statistics directly from another country's government page. See what data are gathered about firearms from groups and organizations on every side of the issue. The list is obviously endless and that means that whether you are gathering supplementary statistics in conjunction with your own original research or are simply providing a research paper on a particular topic, you likely have direct access to statistics that are more current than any you could find in an already published source.
