Violence as a Public Health Problem
Position Statement:
Because of the prevalence of physical and psychological violence in our society, nurses frequently care for the victims, the perpetrators, and the witnesses of physical and psychological violence. In addition, nurses also may be at risk for experiencing violence in the workplace. As members of the largest group of health care providers, nurses should be aware of assessment methods and nursing interventions that will interrupt and prevent the cycle of violence. In particular, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) recognizes domestic violence as a special form of violence with a high incidence and prevalence requiring health care interventions. AACN recommends that faculty in educational institutions preparing nurses in baccalaureate and higher-degree programs ensure that the curricula contain opportunities for all students to gain factual information and clinical experience regarding domestic violence. At a minimum, this content should include:

  • acknowledgment of the scope of the problem;

What is the Health and Safety Benefit Scheme? Who Can Qualify? What are the PRSI Contribution Conditions? How Much is my Payment? ... Notes for Employers
1. What is the Health and Safety Benefit Scheme?
Health and Safety Benefit is a weekly payment for women who are granted Health and Safety Leave under the Maternity Protection Act, 1994. Health and Safety Leave is granted to an employee by her employer when the employer cannot remove a risk to her health or safety during her pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding, or cannot assign her alternative 'risk-free' duties.

Guidelines on Privacy in the Private Health Sector
Office of the Federal
Privacy Commissioner
9 November 2001
Foreword
The Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000 extends the operation of the Privacy Act 1988 to cover the private health sector throughout Australia. The co-regulatory approach offered by the legislation allows for flexibility in how organisations (including health service providers) deal with their privacy obligations, while ensuring standards apply to the protection of personal information, including health information. The legislation recognises the particularly sensitive nature of health information, and places extra protections around its handling, including enforcement mechanisms to deal with breaches of the privacy standards. In the private health sector, the legislation will complement the existing culture of confidentiality that is fundamental to many health service providers' professional practice obligations. The legislation, through its ten National Privacy Principles, promotes greater openness between health service providers and consumers regarding the handling of health information. The legislation introduces, for instance, a general right of access for consumers to their own health records, and requires health service providers to have available documentation that clearly sets out their policies for the management of personal information. Clear and open communication between the health service provider and health consumer is integral to good privacy. This document recognises that when such communication occurs, then ordinarily, many of the privacy obligations of health service providers will be met. When providers are open about the health information they hold, and how they use and disclose it, surprises are unlikely and with fewer surprises there are likely to be fewer complaints.

Department of Public Health , that the state must extend full marriage rights to same-sex couples. The decision prompted a contentious debate across the United States over same-sex marriage, catapulting it to the top level of polarizing cultural issues during a presidential election year. Marriage: Legal Protections for Families and Children offers a reasoned, sober analysis of the likely benefits to U.S. society as a whole that would accrue from the legalization of same-sex marriage. Among its important conclusions is that legal protection of partner relationships can increase a couple's ability to care for each other and provides families security and peace of mind, creating a more secure environment for raising children. The policy brief was prepared by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), an OSI grantee. Additional information about the organization, including extensive resources related to the ongoing debate over same-sex marriage, is available on its website
