Because of the large amount of time most Americans spend at work, many Christians recognize that the workplace provides an obvious opportunity for witnessing. But these Christians are now facing increasing opposition from their employers when they engage in witnessing activities at work. The Christian Law Association receives numerous calls and emails every day from employees who have been warned that “religion has no place in the workplace.” Some employees have even been terminated for exercising their right to religious expression. This article outlines the constitutional and statutory protections of religious speech in the secular workplace.

Vaccinating Children:
Where Do We Draw the Line?
January 22,1999
Introduction
Since the late nineteenth century, public health officials have recommended and enforced vaccines for a small number of highly infectious and communicable diseases. Today, however, there are more than 200 new vaccines in the research pipeline, including one for HIV.
Government's Expanding Role
Why the trend toward new mandatory vaccines? For one thing, Congress placed price controls on routine childhood vaccines in 1993. But the price controls did not apply to new vaccines. Thus, manufacturers have had an incentive to develop and enforce new vaccines for children, since the new products are exempt from price controls.
Massachusetts Deaths Caused by Measles: 1860 to 1970
Figure 1
Vaccine manufacturers, health-care providers, and public health officials are correct to point out that since the introduction of the measles vaccine, the rate of disease has declined. But they neglect to mention that the number of deaths caused by measles was declining long before the vaccine was mandated. Given this lack of historical information, parents and state legislators rarely question whether or not a new vaccine should be mandatory.

The following is an excerpt from an article written by Sidney B. Linden, Legal Aid Ontario Chair, which was published in The Globe and Mail, February 26, 2002. The full article is available on the Website at www.legalaid.on.ca
Access to justice for everyone - regardless of income - is a fundamental principle of democracy and the rule of law. Equal access and protection under the law require that individuals have legal representation when before the courts in serious matters. This is why legal representation in these matters is a right defined by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and reinforced by our national justice system. For more than three decades, Ontario has relied on the dedication of private lawyers to provide legal aid services. In the last five years, however, the number of lawyers accepting legal aid cases has dropped by 23 per cent while our caseload has grown by more than 50 per cent. Clearly, a service-delivery impasse is building and, with it, the risk of real injustice to poor people.

In recent years, the psychological effects of violence and warfare on civilian populations have increasingly become the focus of humanitarian relief operations. After both natural and human-made disasters, efforts to provide de-briefing, counselling and therapy for survivors are widely seen as an essential part of the emergency response. Much of the analysis of trauma has revolved around the concept of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is now generally assumed that PTSD captures the fundamental psychological disturbance after any particular type of trauma or extreme event. However, there is now growing concern that models developed in Western psychiatry in response to trauma should not be used uncritically in societies that do not share the same cultural preoccupations. So rapid has been the response that there has been little time to reflect on the relevance of psycho-social trauma projects for local populations.

How can clinical expert opinion be developed to improve family justice? In the decade following the Children Act 1989 two issues have emerged as indisputable. First, care proceedings are a multi-disciplinary exercise and second, child and adolescent psychiatrists are key players providing the majority of expert evidence. This book is based upon a study that is the first to analyse and digest the views and practice of these clinicians after more than a decade's experience with the Children Act. The text examines the Act itself and what courts require of experts; the institutional and contractual base from which these clinicians approach medico-legal work; their own views of their added value to proceedings; and how this field of work should be taken forward, both by the family justice system and by the clinical community. In a policy environment in which multi-disciplinary and multi-agency approaches to child abuse and neglect are vital and where evidence-based practice increasingly dictates clinical approaches, this book provides vital information for setting a new agenda for current practice and future policy developments. It addresses complex and controversial issues in this field and the text will be central to future education and training initiatives for:

This book contains ground-breaking interpretations of the Charter's provisions in the context of the Convention and the African perspective. It delivers insights into how the rights and responsibilities in the Charter can be harnessed to improve the situation and circumstances of children in Africa. More important, it points out the inadequacies of the Charter to ensure a comprehensive analysis of the provisions contained therein. Download this publication in PDF format here...
