Introduction
This section is for people in the early stages of dementia and their family and friends . It looks at how people with dementia can make their own decisions about who will look after their financial and welfare affairs in the future, if they can no longer manage. It also looks at ways to make handling finances simpler. The sections after this one are concerned with people who have moderate to severe dementia, and are for carers or relatives who are helping with financial or welfare matters.
Plan ahead
Making plans as early as possible is very important. If you have dementia, you have the same right as anyone else to make your own choices. Making some decisions now can also help avoid trouble and expense for your friends and family later. Dementia is progressive, and later on in the illness you may no longer be able to make these arrangements. Put your financial and legal affairs in order as soon as possible. It is a good idea to see a solicitor, who can help with

Looking after the person's property
Introduction
Over time it may become too difficult to look after the person at home. He or she may need to be cared for in a residential or nursing home or hospital. More information about choosing and paying for long-stay care is given in the booklet A Positive Choice ; see Further reading If you feel that the person may need long term care, talk to the social work department. They will do an assessment and decide what kind of care he or she needs. They should do this even if the person is able to pay the full cost of any home fees. Unless the person has a very substantial income or savings and will be able to pay the full cost for the foreseeable future, he or she may need to get help with fees from the social work department, now or later on. NHS care is provided without charge. From 1 April 2002 residential and nursing homes are now both be known as care homes, and the Care Commission registers them all.

LEGAL PLANNING GENERAL

Services available at the Legal Assistance Office include, but are not limited to, general estate planning, wills, insurance review and general property matters. Advice is available on such matters as credit purchasing, state and federal taxation, state motor vehicle laws, landlord-tenant relationships, laws involving domestic issues (divorce, adoption, etc.), state residency matters, immigration laws and commercial contract laws. Check with the Legal Assistance Office for information specific to your area of concern.
The Navy lawyers cannot represent clients in civilian court, but they can advise and assist active duty and retired service members that have personal legal problems. The Legal Assistance Officer is required to treat all such problems confidentially and may not lawfully be ordered to disclose such information by any superior authority. When a legal problem is not within the scope of the Legal Assistance Program, referral can be made to local civilian counsel.
Act immediately when a legal issue is discovered. Immediate action will often resolve small problems before they become more serious. For example, the best time to ask questions is before signing a contract rather than when the terms of the contract come into dispute. Never sign a blank contract!! Utilization of Legal Assistance services is both advised and encouraged when a legal problem is first identified.

LEGAL MATTERS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Please see the packet you received from the Admissions Office for detailed information on the immigration laws and regulations affecting international students. Below is a brief summary of some of the most important points. A. Documents authorizing F-1 student status:
  • I-20 . Your I-20 must be issued by Naropa University and have an unexpired completion of studies date in section 5. Your original I-20 should have a stamp in the right top corner indicating when and where you entered the U.S. I-94 . This is the small white card you received when you came through Immigration. It should indicate that you were admitted in F-1 status and in most cases will bear the notation "D/S". This means that you have been admitted for "Duration of Status", or until you complete your educational program, as long as you continue to fulfill the conditions of your student status (see below). The I-94 has a number printed or written on the top left; this is called your "admission number" by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and should also be noted on your I-20, Section 1.

Joint buyers beware
Milton Silverman on dealers' rights when a deal goes wrong It is common for dealers to purchase a work of art jointly. This can often lead to complications. Take the following example: Two dealers purchased a painting jointly. There was nothing in writing between them, save for a brief acknowledgment that the painting was owned 'fifty-fifty'. As is common, one of the dealers (dealer A) was really no more than a sleeping partner, who had invested half the purchase price in return for a half share of the profit, whilst also agreeing to bear a half share of the losses. It was left to the active dealer (dealer B) to market the painting. Dealer B consigned the painting to dealer C, who advised that he had a number of potential clients for the painting. One of these clients, Mr Michael Mouse, bought the painting. Dealer C advised dealer B to invoice Mouse directly. Dealer B did so. Mouse already had the painting on consignment from dealer C, and disappeared with the painting, without paying for it. Dealer A was mightily displeased, and looked to dealer B for recompense. What were dealer A's rights against Dealer B? There were no specific contractual obligations in writing, as is usual. Dealer A would therefore have to look to claim against dealer B in negligence. Reasonably assuming that dealer B owed dealer A a duty of care, it would be fundamental in determining negligence to consider whether dealer B did anything outside the usual custom and practice of art dealers in this situation.

Making a Will
It is most important to make a will to ensure that your wishes are carried out. It also makes it easier and less costly to administer your estate. If you have children under 18 you should make a will appointing a testamentary guardian to act on your behalf in the event of the death of both parents. If a lone parent is the sole guardian it is particularly important to do this. It is particularly important to make a will if a person with a disability will be inheriting from you. When making your will you should inform the solicitor that the person has a disability as there may be implications if the person is on a means tested payment e.g. Disability Allowance. Your solicitor can also advise you about setting up a trust.

Foreigners may purchase land and property in Turkey in their own names provided that properties are located in towns (i.e. there must be municipality in the area where the property is and the property must be situated within the boundaries of that municipality or borough), not in villages or rural areas and outside of military zones. (note: foreigners may now buy in villages or rural areas) In order to acquire the title of a property, an application has to be submitted to the local Land Registry Office in which the property is situated. After carrying out necessary searches and checks for the abovementioned requirements, the transfer of the title is done by the Land Registry Office. During the transaction, the proofs or the documents concerning the transfer of the full purchase price into Turkey must be presented to the Land Registry Office. Also a one per cent duty (i.e. tax) both for the purchaser and seller is due and collected during the transaction
