RALPH WHITE From Hired Guns To Healers
The Emerging Movement to Renew Legal Culture
Today, few people outside the legal profession have any notion that a serious movement is afoot to end the widespread materialism, vindictiveness and cold self-interest of legal practice. The assumption among the general public is that lawyers are ruthless sharks and they love it that way. But a recent study shows that sixty five per cent of practicing lawyers are deeply unhappy with the state of their profession. A sneaking suspicion is starting to emerge that lawyers may be human after all and they have had enough of the seedy and reptilian ethics so widespread in current American jurisprudence. It's not clear when the turning point was reached. Perhaps a nadir occurred when O.J. Simpson's trial revealed to the world that big money and fancy lawyers can buy almost anyone freedom today. Or perhaps it was the grotesque and hypocritical politicization of the law around the presidential impeachment farce. Or maybe it was simply one final distasteful display of Judge Judy's distinctly non-judicial rudeness and intemperance. We may never know, as we could all offer our own examples of when the dismal state of law today was revealed in all its pathos and shame. But what we do know is that lawyers in increasing numbers are demanding changes in the way the law is both taught and practiced. And they are serious.

The Ancient Dynasties
Chinese civilization, as described in mythology, begins with Pangu ( ), the creator of the universe, and a succession of legendary sage-emperors and culture heroes (among them are Huang Di , Yao, and Shun) who taught the ancient Chinese to communicate and to find sustenance, clothing, and shelter. The first prehistoric dynasty is said to be Xia ( ), from about the twenty-first to the sixteenth century B.C. Until scientific excavations were made at early bronze-age sites at Anyang ( ), Henan ( ) Province, in 1928, it was difficult to separate myth from reality in regard to the Xia. But since then, and especially in the 1960s and 1970s, archaeologists have uncovered urban sites, bronze implements, and tombs that point to the existence of Xia civilization in the same locations cited in ancient Chinese historical texts. At minimum, the Xia period marked an evolutionary stage between the late neolithic cultures and the typical Chinese urban civilization of the Shang dynasty.

  • Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller speaks about the Museum Project in New York on January 10, 2002 During his official visit to the US, Prime Minister Leszek Miller addressed members and representatives of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. The meeting was presided by Mortimer Zuckerman, the Chairman of the Conference. The Prime Minister's address was his only public speech in his official US program. By personal invitation, Jerzy Halbersztadt, Project Director of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, accompanied the Prime Minister to the US. PM Miller concentrated on three issues: the restitution of Jewish municipal property, the restitution of Jewish private property, as well as the restitution of the memory of the lost Jewish community in Poland. Mr. Miller appealed to Jewish communities in the US to support the idea of creating the Museum. Following the Prime Minister's speech, Mr. Halbersztadt gave a presentation in which he outlined the vision of this future museum, which will serve as a cultural and educational center for further generations.

    SOME PHILOSOPHICAL
    CONCEPTS OF DIVINITY
This chapter explains some concepts of general theology. The Topics do not necessarily apply to Jehovah, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit of the Bible. None of the terms defined in this chapter refers to a specific religion or denomination except 'triune deity' and Replacement Theology. If you are reading this book from the beginning, you can skip this chapter initially. You will need to read about Pantheism for Chapter 40 and Deism for Chapter 50. Philosophers and those who study comparative religion have studied the concept of a divine being in the abstract. Various religions have different concepts of divine being(s). Christianity is monotheistic, not polytheistic, non-pantheistic and non-deistic. Those abstract concepts will now be explained, in preparation for a discussion of the omnipresence and personality of God. In this chapter 'God' refers to the God of Judaism and Christianity, whereas 'god' refers to either (a) the concept of a divine being in the abstract, e.g. "a god is superior to man", or (b) the being(s) worshipped by any non- Judeo-Christian religions. Torrey: no
Topic 12: Heresy Heresy means false doctrine, or false teachings.

A Real Life Analysis of Microsoft and 21st Century Society, or Why the DOJ Doesn't Get it
    Part I
    By Charles Kafoure
Charles Kafoure is a technology consultant based in Indianapolis. He has been in the business of providing equipment, software and/or services for twenty five years. He has managed the establishment of large, turnkey computer projects in Korea, China, Singapore, Japan, the U.S., other Asian and European countries, and in Australia. He currently focuses on technology services for legal, real estate and other professional businesses. He will soon publish an article entitled, "Litigation Management: Organize Using Project Management Methodology." (Posted July 1, 1998; Archived August 15, 1998)
    Author's Note
This article began as a simple analysis of the DOJ action against Microsoft. After a couple of days, I realized two things: a) the DOJ case has no merit, and is not worth more than a page or two, and b) Microsoft’s role in the world of technology (that is to say "the world") is significant, and needs to be examined carefully, but in the right context. I am not a lawyer, but have determined that lawyers aren’t required just yet, as the issue is not yet properly framed from social and technological perspectives. It is difficult to ask the right questions and come to the right conclusions when the issues underlying those questions are ill-defined and no one really knows the correct basis for the conclusions.

The Commonwealth Sir Thomas Smith, in his account of the Commonwealth, barely mentions "citizens and burgesses" as "next to gentlemen," yet it was these citizens and burgesses, who, since the reign of John, had been obtaining collective powers and immunities, also known as "liberties," and who, within a third of a century after Smith wrote, would, like the landlords, begin to be deprived of the monopolistic and governmental features of their franchises. The gild franchises of the merchants and manufacturers gave to them a "collective lordship" similar to the private lordship of the barons, for their gilds were erected into governments with their popular assemblies, their legislatures, their courts

Special to TLE Imagine you're embarking on a journey to an undiscovered country whose history and customs, its heroes and geography, its language and way of life are totally foreign to you. As a new arrival on this foreign soil, you want to fit in harmoniously among it's good citizens and be regarded as a reasonable and prudent member of its society, a sober individual whose judgments and opinions can be relied on. Just as you wouldn't go to a distant land without learning it's ways, you don't expect a mere permit to carry to instantly make you anything greater than you already are. You become intimately familiar with all facets of "legal defensive firearm culture," it's history, language, it's notable personages, and how legal defensive firearms integrate into a total program of both mental and physical preparedness so that no sudden event can ever take you unawares, both in the present and in the future. As you travel abroad in this strange land, you soon discover that you're treated with entirely less dignity and respect than others are.

I trust that your Lordship will in each case consider both the context in which the remarks are made, and also the broader surrounding countryside, if I may put it like that. For thirty years, as I set out earlier, I have found myself subjected to vicious attack by bodies, acting as they freely admit as Jews. For thirty years I endeavoured to turn the other cheek, and I hope I succeeded. Mr Rampton drew attention to the fun I poked at Simon Wiesenthal, a joke made explicitly about his other-than-good looks.173 He called that remark "anti-Semitic". It was not, it was a joke about his looks, of the same genre that Mr Rampton made on Day 28 when he inquired rhetorically of Professor Funke whether a certain outer-fringe Swedish revisionist seen, in one video shown to the Court, with long blonde hair was a man or a woman.174

I'd been thinking about this childhood favorite for the past eight months or so, and had been looking for it off and on since. It stands up pretty well for an adult reader. The plot: twelve heirs of a rich old man move into a nearby condominium and set off on a race to solve the challenge set out in his will. The protagonist is a teenage girl, misunderstood and put-upon, but the story is filled with interesting characters and a decent mystery.
Recommended The Hairstons: An American Family in Black and White
    Henry Wiencek
An interesting subject, but poorly organized and written. The author kept getting in the way of my reading. His filters, his perceptions, his focus all felt off. I felt like I was waiting for him to catch up to what I already knew. Plus, he focused solely on the black and white Hairston descendents of the slave owners, and not necessarily the other slaves. It felt like he as trying to make too literal a point of "We are all each other's brothers." On the other hand, there are some fascinating stories he captures, particularly the ones he pulls out of historical records and oral tradition. However, Wiencek's purpose is too ambitious, and he glosses through history, trying to sum it all up in the experiences of isolated individuals. The reader is left with more questions than answers.

Therefore this is by no means an exhaustive survey. Many records are still extant and await discovery and examination. In this age of rapid movement and mobility, and the changing nature of family life, there is growing interest in finding ones ‘roots’ and learning something of past generations. In the case of the Turlington family this information was not hard to come by as a branch of the family has lived in the same place for the last three centuries. Descendants still live in the village of Quorn today. As the following pages will show , the Turlingtons are intrinsically a Leicestershire family. To this day it remains an essentially
