III. "Fair Hearings": Aurality and the New Legal Language
A turn to the auditory dimension is . . . more than a simple changing of variables. It begins as a deliberate decentering of a dominant tradition in order to discover what may be missing as a result of the traditional double reduction of vision as the main variable and metaphor. he growing popularity of aural metaphors in contemporary American legal discourse has already drawn some comment from observers, but so far it has attracted only the most superficial of explanations.
A. Hearing Culture
In the midst of a culture saturated with printed and electronic texts and bombarded by images from television and movies, it cannot be denied that seeing remains at the center of American sensory experience. There is nonetheless evidence to suggest that in the late twentieth century we are increasingly fascinated with - and in a few instances, are even becoming biased towards - aural expression and experience.

In This Issue
In this issue of the Law and History Review we address law as an instrumentality of social categorization and classification, as a medium of social regulation and reform, as an emerging professional practice, and as a taught tradition, across three continents and several centuries. In addition, articles in this issue bring to light crucial historiographical, methodological, and interpretive debates. li li legislation and codified statutes) that affected its enforceability. Commentaries on the Laws of Virginia (1831) came into existence. Tucker's opinions on Blackstone are quoted, and the Note provides insights into his teaching methodology. Tucker's law school was preferable to a legal apprenticeship in many ways. It was more academic than reading law, although not as theoretical an institution as either Wythe or Jefferson would have thought to be ideal. The authors list the students who can be determined to have attended this law school, which lasted for only seven sessions, and tabulate the comparative enrollments of the Winchester Law School and several other law schools. A visit to the dentist took me past a university bookshop in Erlangen recently: Mencke-Blaesing There I picked up a couple of law books. The first was the dtv-Atlas Recht , Band 1. (To buy from amazon.de click on picture - but read on first!) EU law and criminal law. It has rave reviews on amazon.de and elsewhere, but I wonder about some of the illustrations. I just wonder who did the graphics. I mean, I know who did them, but did the author provide the idea and the design company just execute it? Of course, the title conjures up a different book, one that would show the differences between the (divided into romanisch and deutsch, and deutsch including Scandinavia), and the anglo-amerikanischer Rechtskreis (divided into englisch and amerikanisch - very odd). Comments I bought the Penguin Atlas of World History (in two volumes) last week - it's scheduled for a future Monday review of stuff, but I don't think I'm giving too much away by saying it rocks, especially for Yoorpean history where countries are forever turning into other countries.

Legal Action Taken on 'Hitler Wine'
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Belgium's official anti-racism center said on Friday it was preparing legal action to stop imports of an Italian wine with labels depicting Adolf Hitler and other leading Nazis.
"A picture of Adolf Hitler is in itself too little (to trigger legal action), but he's also doing the Hitler salute and there is this message 'One People, One Empire, One Leader"' Ingrid Aendenboom, spokeswoman for the Center for Equal Opportunities and the Fight against Racism, told Reuters.
"That falls within the framework of the anti-racism law," she said.
The wine "is apparently a huge success in Italy," but the Belgian public was "very sensitive to this kind of thing," she said. The wine is sold at Belgian flea markets.
The head of the wine producing company, Andrea Lunardelli, told German television in September that the labels carrying phrases such as "Sieg Heil" and "Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuehrer" were made chiefly for the German market.
Its Web site says the labels "remind us of the lives of celebrated personages of Italian and world political history such as Che Guevara, Churchill...Hitler, Marx, Mussolini, Napoleon."
