History of the Judge Advocate General's Corps The Judge Advocate General's Corps is a single organization made up of lawyers, legal administrators and specialists, and court reporters. The Corps' members are commissioned and warrant officers, enlisted soldiers and civilians, and are members of the Active Component, Army Reserve, and National Guard. They are also members of two honorable professions: the profession of arms and the profession of law. Like every Army organization, the primary mission of the Corps is to support the war fighter through a variety of activities. Judge advocates assist commanders with Operational Law, Civil Law, and Military Justice. Army lawyers provide legal services to soldiers and their families, boosting morale and allowing soldiers to stay focused on their mission. Most importantly, The Judge Advocate General's Corps provides the structure and support for maintaining discipline, the foundation of an effective fighting force. Today, the insignia worn by all uniformed members of the Corps reflects the many components of the Corps' mission: the pen denotes the recording of testimony; the sword, the military character of the Corps' mission; and the wreath, the traditional symbol of accomplishment.

guide is selective n its coverage as there is an overwhelming quantity of materials
available in all formats. This guide emphasizes Canadian legal history, and
provides some key sources for legal history of other parts of the world, in

Irish Studies Review 'This collection of previously published articles is an eclectic mix. The subjects dealt with vary from legal training to the penal laws; while the periods under discussion stretch from the present to the twelfth century. In truth, the contents of the book have only two binding elements: common author- ship and a relevance to the history and development of the law and legal administration in Ireland. Given these circumstances it would be impossible to offer here a full review of every item. 'here are, however, a number of points in general which should be highlighted, and a few matters which require specific attention.
The vast majority of those with an interest in any aspect of Irish history will find something to draw attention in this book, and will be the wiser for reading it. That being the case, this book should find its way on to the shelves of our libraries, and be read by students, researchers and teachers alike. Neal Garnham, QUB, Irish Studies Review

COMPARATIVE LAW, LEGAL HISTORY, AND THE HOLISTIC APPROACH TO LEGAL CULTURES. by Michele Graziadei Facoltà di giurisprudenza, Università del Piemonte Orientale "A. Avogadro". Introduction What can comparative law do for legal history? The question has no obvious answer today, in our age of specialized disciplines, such as legal history and comparative law . Therefore, we need to address it afresh . In doing this, the present contribution advances some points of view that may foster a new dialogue among scholars who may want to cross the line between the fields of comparative law and legal history. As a matter of fact, though the birth of modern historiography owes much to the development of comparative studies in the field of law , most legal history today is written without paying regard to comparative legal studies. The same is true for comparative law: comparative law scholarship seldom delves deeply into the historical dimension of the law, but rather focuses on the present alone. Of course, there are welcome and important exceptions to this attitude in both comparative law and legal history, and I will turn to them while discussing my opening question. Nevertheless, the relationship between comparative law and legal history, though often stressed

Three Mile Island-2 (TMI-2) came on line in December 1978, and was grossly over budget and behind schedule. Legal intervention was conducted by the ECNP and Three Mile Island Alert (TMIA). The plant had been on-line for just 90 days, or 1/120 of its expected operating life, before the March, 1979, accident. One billion dollars was spent to defuel the facility. Three months of nuclear power production at TMI-2 has cost close to $2 billion dollars in construction and cleanup bills; or the equivalent of over $10.6 million for every day TMI-2 produced electricity. The above mentioned costs do not include nuclear decontamination and decommissioning or restoring the site to "Greenfield." The loss-of-coolant, core melt accident began on March 28, 1979, at 3:56 a.m. The plant came within 30 minutes of a full meltdown. The reactor vessel was destroyed, and large amounts of unmonitored radiation was released directly into the community. Later in the day at 4:30 p.m., a press conference was convened by of Lt. Law - Govt vs Private Index Overview Private Sector History/Issues Asteroids vs Moon CATS Unnecessary Legal Environment History/Issues Archimedes Institute Government History/Issues PERM. '86 Address How Govt Can Help Advocacy Groups ... vagueness of international law significantly discourage private ventures today Summary The law regarding utilization of space resources is not very well developed at all. Many leading space lawyers have expressed, both in published papers and verbally, that there is nothing in international law that stops a private entity from going out and claiming private property ownership over, say, asteroidal resources which they physically utilize, or possibly an entire asteroid visited by humans or teleoperated robotic representatives, and that there is plenty of terrestrial precedent in the law for doing all of this. Some of the case studies they cite, which may lay the precedent for claims of space resources, will be discussed in this article, after a discussion of international law in general. Regardless of the various legal opinions from all sides on these matters, there are a few things which virtually every lawyer agrees on: Space law is vague and underdeveloped, and the only thing likely to change this is someone staking a claim to space resources and having a court case. Terrestrial laws are likely to govern initial utilization of nonterrestrial resources. However, it is premature to enter any court cases yet, and the first case doesn't have much merit until after a physical claim is made by a human or teleoperated robotic representative.

In comparison to federal legislative history documentation, there are far fewer sources to determine legislative intent for Illinois legislation. One good (but dated) source about Illinois legislative research is Wendt, Illinois Legal Research Manual (St. Paul: Butterworth Legal Publishers, 1988) (R,REF KFI 1275. W4 1988). Chapter Six discusses Illinois Legislative History. This chapter originally appeared at 1982 Southern Illinois University Law Journal 601. An additional authoritative resource is the following: Researching Legislative History by Richard C. Edwards, Illinois Legislative Reference Bureau.
LEGISLATIVE HISTORY RESEARCH STEPS:
Determine the Appropriate Statute To Be Researched To trace the legislative history of an Illinois statute it is necessary to obtain a copy of the statute and determine the particular Illinois public act that was the source for the section that you want to research. REQUIRED READING:
Friedman, A History of American Law (2d ed., 1985) (paperback), and History of American Law Documents SUPPLEMENTARY READING: America: Past and Present (3d ed., 1991), on reserve in the Law Library. America: Past and Present , is an excellent textbook written by history-department historians who have no particular interest in law. Although I try not to presuppose any knowledge on your part regarding the history of the United States, you may desire more detail than the readings and lectures provide. This book is a good place to find that detail. Don't buy it; simply consult it in the library. The required and supplementary reading will be available on reserve in the Law Library. No commercial outline, nutshell or hornbook exists that will be of any utility whatsoever for this course. TOPICS AND ASSIGNMENTS We will take the following assignments in order, each assignment will take about one class. My tendency is to take too much time rather than too little, and for that reason there are fewer assignments than scheduled class meetings. Where no reading assignment is indicated for a particular topic, this means that you'll be just fine if you show up to class having read everything to that point in the class. Use these days as opportunities to catch up with the reading.
