In a variety of instances it has then been possible to correlate the linguistic histories with strikingly parallel successions of change in regional archaeological stratigraphies (Ambrose 1982, Ehret 1993, 1998, and Ownby 1985, among others). The pre-European history of the Australian peoples would seem an immensely fruitful field for just these kinds of studies. The cases most parallel to the Australian situation would seem be those of the Khoisan family of languages, up till recent times still spoken principally by hunter-gatherer communities. But our knowledge is more thorough and extensive at present for the other families of Africa, and in fact some of our strongest and most illustrative examples come from the Niger-Congo family, especially its Bantu sub-branch, and the Nilo-Saharan family.
Linguistic Stratigraphy and the History of Material Culture
An African Case of the Shift from Food Collecting to Food Production We begin here with an example from the Nilo-Saharan language family in Africa.

This manual accompanies the third of five videos that describe the education of a child who is deaf-blind. The video portrays Riley Ford, who is totally blind and has a profound hearing loss, and examines the concepts, skills and supports that are necessary for building an effective communication system for children who are deaf-blind. In the video, some of the techniques Riley's interpreter-tutor uses with him at school are discussed. The video and manual may be ordered from Teaching Research, Western Oregon University, 345 N. http://www.bashy.dk/marching.htm
Europe is marching in the wrong direction Bashy Quraishy President – European Network Against Racism - Brussels Around 20 million people who live in the EU and other European countries come from Developing Countries. Some have lived here for generations; others came after World War II. Many came here, while Europe's economic growth was in need of cheap labour. By and large, they came from countries outside Europe's borders, i.e. Asia, The Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Their dream was to find work, earn money, support their families and save enough, so that they could one day return to their homeland. It is always easy to dream, but hard to fulfil a dream. Many had trouble saving the necessary capital for the trip home and for re-establishing themselves in their homeland. For some, it was hard to return home after many years in a Western country. The arrival of their families and their children's education was another reason for them not being able to go home. In recent times, numerous refugees have arrived, who had been forced to leave their countries because of political or religious persecution, and in some cases civil wars have forced them to flee. In the beginning, these people were welcome in Europe. They were hard working, undemanding and grateful. Their traditions, cultures and languages were no problem for the authorities or the local population. As long as they did their work

HISTORY 6500 "Contemporary Africa"
Fall 2000
Instructor: Jay Spaulding
Dear Friends,
Greetings, and welcome to this course! Few subjects offer richer possibilities for discovery and the achievement of insight than does the examination of contemporary Africa. During our time together we will encounter Africa through the sharing of responses to some directed readings and via discussion of internet research. We will attempt to identify and learn to appreciate some African perspectives toward key issues, and to assess the opportunities and limitations of alternative courses of action by African political leaders.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Regular class attendance and participation; alert yourselves to news from Africa.
  • Obtain, read, and be ready to discuss in class the following required textbooks:
  • Global Studies, Africa.
A compact reference work useful for this course.
  • Basil Davidson, Modern Africa.
A short narrative history by a European apologist.
  • George Ayittey, Africa in Chaos. An angry critical analysis by a native son.

    Understanding Narrative
The Praise Song Cultural Borrowing Objects of Power ... In and Out of Context The second part of this introductory essay consists of conversations between the authors. Bourgeois and Rodolitz have team-taught a web-based course on this subject for more than five years utilizing a dialogue medium that lends itself to immediacy and informality. Essays in the usual sense speak TO the reader; dialogue, however, allows the reader to participate, if only in an imaginary sense. Additionally, in the medium of dialogue, the evolution of thought is more apparent than in an edited essay. Often, the journey to a conclusion is as important as the conclusion itself. The reader is encouraged to join in this ongoing exploration. AB: Why don't we begin by considering a group of related objects, not necessarily related by culture but by function?

The 4th of the Lie! “The Declaration of Independence was bankrupt from its inception. The gangsters who stole this land from the Indigenous People and Africans from Africa never intended for it to apply to us. Consequently, we are asking you not to be down with the 4th of the lie. As an alternative we would like you to join any organization that is struggling for a true independence which is based on truth and justice.”

Tribal Filipinos The term "tribal Filipinos" refers to the 6.5 million members of indigenous communities in the remote interiors of Luzon, Mindanao and some Visayan islands. They form a diverse collection of over 40 ethno-linguistic groups, each with a distinct language and culture. Historically, they were the least influenced by Christianity and Hispanisation. Nor were they Islamized. They either withdrew to the hinterlands in the face of colonization or they stood their ground sucessfully. In either case, they continued to live in their relatively isolated, self-sufficient communities, with their own communal views on land, their co-operative work exchanges, their own laws, customs and rituals, their songs, dances and folklore. The period of the 1970s saw the intenstification of the land problem. Since tribal Filipinos occupy areas rich with natural resources, they are beseigned by a grwoing number of lowland farmers and foreign and local corporations engaged in mining, logging, plantations and other export industries. Today, tribal Filipinos are organizing themselves in defence of their ancestral domains. In as much as their cultures are deeply rooted in their lands, the loss of the latter would likewise mean the loss of their identity as distinct peoples.
