African Art at Large(1)
Art and Survival
My purpose for the "Africa at Large" sections is to use artworks to draw you into the geography, culture and current status of the countries where they were produced. While the world, as well as most of the press, look to the Middle East and Asia, current events of equal significance constantly unfold in places like the Congo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and elsewhere. I hope the art can make these places more "real," and perhaps inspire some of you to act.

Since 1994, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been devastated by ethnic strife and civil war, touched off by a massive inflow of refugees from the fighting in Rwanda and Burundi. First, there was the rebelion against Mobutu Sese Seko in May 1997, led by Laurent Kabila, who became leader. He was almost immediately challenged by the insurgents from Rwanda and Burundi in August, 1998. Troops from many parts of Africa tried to help the Kabila regime, and a cease-fire was signed on July 10, 1999. Fighting continued, however, and resulted in the assassination of Kabila in January, 2001. Laurent's son Joseph became head of state, and has attempted to quell the unrest but, as of this narrative, the chaos and bloodshed are still going virtually unchecked, and everyday the death toll rises.

Home About Us Programmes Publications ... Feedback February 2001 Porto Alegre Call for Mobilisation Social forces from around the world have gathered here at the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre. Unions and NGOs, movements and organizations, intellectuals and artists, together we are building a great alliance to create a new society, different from the dominant logic wherein the free-market and money are considered the only measure of worth. Davos represents the concentration of wealth, the globalization of poverty and the destruction of our earth. Porto Alegre represents the hope that a new world is possible, where human beings and nature are the center of our concern. We are part of a movement which has grown since Seattle. We challenge the elite and their undemocratic processes, symbolised by the World Economic Forum in Davos. We came to share our experiences, build our solidarity, and demonstrate our total rejection of the neoliberal policies of globalisation. We are women and men, farmers, workers, unemployed, professionals, students, blacks and indigenous peoples, coming from the South and from the North, committed to struggle for peoples' rights, freedom, security, employment and education. We are fighting against the hegemony of finance, the destruction of our cultures, the monopolization of knowledge, mass media, and communication, the degradation of nature, and the destruction of the quality of life by multinational corporations and anti-democratic policies. Participative democratic experiences like that of Porto Alegre show us that a concrete alternative is possible. We reaffirm the supremacy of human, ecological and social rights over the demands of finance and investors.

The History and Mystery of Belly Dance
This general style of female solo interpretive dance is known and appreciated all over the Arab world including Northern Africa. There is no formal choreography but instead a variety of characteristic movements with which to interpret the music and show mastery of the rhythm. In the villages of northern Africa, most women dance as a social activity, at weddings for example, in all-female groups. The character of this sensual dance style is different in the big cities; particularly in Egypt where the dance has reached its most highly developed form. Top dancers achieve the status of movie stars because of the prominence of the entertainment industry. Through discussion, slides and demonstration, Ms. Siegel, as "Habiba" will trace the long history of this dance. Attend this fascinating lecture and find out for yourself the skills needed for authentic belly dance. Ms. Barbara Siegel

Ethnicity in Educational Practices
Zenaida Quezada-Reyes
Introduction
Ethnicity refers to cultural (dialect, religion, traditions, etc.) and physical (skin color, body shape, etc.) characteristics used to classify people into (ethnic) groups or categories considered to be significantly different from others. Ethnicity is not a static phenomenon (Hall, 1997; Giordan, 1999;). Ethnic groups change through time in complex ways. Education, media, migration, colonialism and globalization are examples of processes that have changed individual and group identities. These processes seem to emphasize political and economic stratification. Thus, in a way make ethnicity class-based and politically-based. In all these instances, there seems to be two major emerging trends on how groups react to various processes: there are those who become assimilated in the mainstream culture and those that resist assimilation. Those belonging to certain groups may play a major role in the definition of group identities and in the maintenance of boundaries between groups. Ethnic groups who accept citizenship in the state where they are living are the assimilationist group and often buy the idea of ethnic diversity. Moreover, they aspire to be part of the Great Tradition.
