Early History to Independence
In ancient times the area of Lebanon and Syria was occupied by the Canaanites, who founded the great Phoenician cities and later established a commercial maritime empire (see Phoenicia ). Lebanon's cities as well as its forests and iron and copper mines (since exhausted) attracted the successive dominant powers in the Middle East. The Phoenician cities occupied a favored position in the Persian Empire and were conquered by Alexander the Great. The region came under Roman dominion starting in 64 B.C. (there are notable Roman ruins at Baalbek ) and was Christianized before the Arab conquest in the 7th cent. By then the Maronites had established themselves : a cardinal fact in the history of Lebanon, which long remained predominantly Christian while Syria became Muslim. Later (11th cent.) the Druze settled in S Lebanon and in adjacent regions of Syria, and trouble between them and the Christians was to become a constant theme in regional history. The Crusaders (see Crusades ) were active in Lebanon (late 11th cent.) and were aided by the Lebanese Christians. After the Crusaders, Lebanon was loosely ruled by the Mamluks (c.1300). Invasions by Mongols and others contributed to the decline of trade until the reunification of the Middle East under the Ottoman Turks (early 16th cent.). Under Ottoman control, Lebanon had considerable autonomy, and powerful families ruled the country.

History of Israel's role in Lebanon

Israel fears attacks from across its border with Lebanon
Palestinian refugees have lived in camps in southern Lebanon since the state of Israel was created. The area became the centre of Palestinian political and military operations when Palestinian guerrilla forces were expelled from Jordan in 1970-1 following clashes with the Jordanian Arab Legion. Raids across the Israeli border by Palestinians from southern Lebanon became more frequent. In March 1978, 20,000 Israeli forces invaded and occupied south Lebanon and established a "security zone" following repeated incursions into Israel from southern Lebanon by the Palestinian National Liberation Movement, the PLO's guerrilla movement. Under pressure from the UN Security Council, Israel withdrew from the territory, but transferred control of a border strip to the pro-Israeli Christian militias in Lebanon. The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 425, which called for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from south Lebanon and established a UN Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil), to maintain peace across the border. Israeli invasion The security zone is three to six miles wide Despite the 1978 attack, and the deployment of Unifil, Palestinian guerrilla forces succeeded in re-establishing a military presence in southern Lebanon. Border clashes increased. On June 6 1982 Israeli troops invaded Lebanon, in an attempt to remove the PLO military threat to Israel's northern border.

needed for all pdf files Lebanon's Rich History The City of Lebanon (just a town then) was founded in 1761 and was settled later that year. It's location at the confluence of the Connecticut River and the Mascoma River made it a prime location for the transport of resources and provided an easy energy resource for running mills. The region has a rich history in textile manufacture and was still heavily reliant on the textile industry as recently as 40 years ago. The evolution of the railroads running up and down the river, as well as to Boston helped to solidify Lebanon's success in the textiles industry. As the textile industry came under attack from foreign imports and other economic changes, the mills closed and the nature of the region changed. Lebanon began recruiting and attracting clean, high-technology industry to replace the failing mills and railroads. As a result, we are now home to software companies, high-tech manufacturers, and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. We are also home to the most technologically advanced plasma cutting technology companies in the world.

Steeped in History, Lebanon Welcomes Tourists
By Joyce Dalton
For much of the 20th century, Lebanon held the undisputed title of financial and commercial center of the Middle East. Beirut, its capital, was widely acclaimed as the Paris of the East. Visitors loved the small nation, totaling only 4,035 square miles, both for its unparalleled historic sites and for the sophistication and fine dining found in the capital. Beginning in the mid-’70s, however, a disastrous civil war, kidnappings and skirmishes between Israel and Lebanon-based Palestinians created a different set of images. After the civil war ended in 1992, the nation set out to rebuild its shattered infrastructure and to re-establish its position in the region. Tourism was not neglected. Hotels reopened, travel agencies created intriguing itineraries and gradually, tourists returned. In July 1997, the U.S. government allowed its travel ban to expire (an advisory remains in effect) and by the next spring, U.S. tour operators began introducing a new generation of Americans to this fascinating country. Even before the ban was lifted, many travelers were visiting the ancient ruins of Baalbek on day excursions from Damascus, Syria. In a nation boasting numerous historic sites, Baalbek tops most visitors’ lists. Situated in the Bekaa Valley, it was dedicated to Baal, the Phoenician god of rain and sun. During the period of Roman rule, Alexander the Great, Pompey, Julius Caesar, Hadrian and Caracalla all had a hand at restoring Baalbek’s temples, which dated to the 2nd millennium B.C., and building new ones. In 748 the Arabs came and in 1400, the Mongol chieftain, Tamerlane.

ABOUT THE EMBASSY
History
The United States first established a diplomatic presence in Beirut in 1833 with the appointment of a consular agent. Throughout the nineteenth century, American activity in Lebanon was focused on religious, educational and literary pursuits, with the founding of what became Lebanese American University in 1835 and American University of Beirut in 1866. American officials were evacuated from Lebanon in 1917 when U.S. relations with the Ottoman Empire were severed. The Consulate General was re-established after World War I. Deteriorating security conditions during Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war resulted in a gradual reduction of Embassy functions and the departure of dependents and many staff. Ambassador Meloy was assassinated in 1976. Following an April 1983 suicide bomb attack on the Embassy in Beirut, in which 49 Embassy staff were killed and 34 were injured, the Embassy relocated to Awkar, north of the capital. A second bombing there, in September 1984, killed 11 and injured 58. In September 1989, the Embassy closed and all American staff were evacuated, due to security threats. The Embassy re-opened in November 1990.

Flourishing Phoenician city-states along the Eastern Mediterranean coast dominate the trade of the ancient world before 1000 BC. In the centuries that follow the area is conquered by the Persians, by Alexander the Great and by the Romans. Ancient ruins throughout the area attest to all these different periods. During these times different religious, political and ethnic groups live side by side, sometimes peaceably, sometimes not. The area is still under Roman rule when the Prophet Mohammed begins teaching Islam in 610 AD. From 634 AD various Khalifs rule, culminating in the Ottoman state. By the 11th century AD most of the communities that live there today have already settled in the area. 2 OTTOMAN RULE
Rulers are more interested in tax revenues than converts. The local tax-farmers become the powerful families of their area. Many of these families still dominate politics today. Beirut becomes increasingly important, growing from 6,000 inhabitants at the beginning of the century to 46,000 by 1861. From 1860 onwards there are repeated clashes between feudal landlords and peasants and between the different groups. In 1860 Druze Muslims massacre Christians.

REACT TO THIS STORY Introduction Lebanon in the 1970s could not really be called a nation. More accurately, it was a constellation of warring states within a state. Palestinian guerrillas, Shiite Muslims, right-wing Christian Phalangists and leftist Sunni Muslims fought together as well as against one another for control of Lebanon's destiny. Israel, Iran, Syria, France and the United States also had a hand in the fighting. The key vehicle for Shiite self-expression, Hezbollah (the Party of God) emerged as a product of this conflict in the form not only of a militant organization but also of a shadowy state-within-a-state. by David Montero David Montero is a freelance journalist based in Oakland, California.
