It was probably founded after 700 B.C. , as there is no mention of it until Persian times when it was the capital of the Phoenician federation of Tyre, Sidon, and Aradus and was divided into three sections. The city flourished under the Seleucid and Roman empires. In A.D. Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Location: Southwest Asia Southwest Asia , or West Asia , is the southwestern part of Asia. The region is sometimes considered synonymous with the Middle East, but usually the term Middle East includes North African countries or at least the part of Egypt in North Africa. Geographers that were annoyed with the ambiguity of the term "Middle East" tried to popularize the word "Southwest Asia", but with little success. The term "West Asia" has become the preferred term of use in countries such as India, possibly because of the perceived Eurocentrism of the term "Middle East".

The sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the Strait of Gibraltar on the west and to the Sea of Marmara and Black Sea by the Dardanelles and the Bosporus on the east. The Sea of Marmara is often considered a part of the Mediterranean Sea, whereas the Black Sea is not. The Suez Canal in the southeast connects the Mediterranean with the Red Sea.

Geography
As in any mountainous region, the physical geography of Lebanon is extremely complex and varied. Landforms, climate, soils, and vegetation undergo some sharp and striking changes within short distances. Four distinct physiographic regions may be distinguished: a narrow coastal plain along the Mediterranean Sea, the Lebanon Mountains (Jabal Lubnan), al-Biqa' (Beqaa) valley, and the Anti-Lebanon and Hermon ranges running parallel to the coastal mountains. The coastal plain is narrow and discontinuous, almost disappearing in places. It is formed of river-deposited alluvium and marine sediments, which alternate suddenly with rocky beaches and sandy bays, and is generally fertile. In the far north it expands to form the 'Akkar Plain. Al-Biqa' valley (Bekaa Valley) lies between the Lebanon Mountains in the west and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains in the east; its fertile soils consist of alluvial deposits from the mountains on either side. The valley, approximately 110 miles (176 Km) long and from six to 16 miles (9 to 25 Km) wide, is part of the great East African Rift System. In the south, al-Biqa' becomes hilly and rugged, blending into the foothills of Mt. Hermon (Jabal ash-Shaykh) to form the upper Jordan Valley. The Anti-Lebanon range (al-Jabal ash-Sharqi) starts with a high peak in the north and slopes southward until it is interrupted by Mt. Hermon (9,232 feet or 2,814 meters).

Lebanon's mountainous terrain, proximity to the sea, and strategic location at a crossroads of the world were decisive factors in shaping its history. The political, economic, and religious movements that either originated in the region or crossed through to leave an imprint upon Lebanese society give form to that history.
The country's role in the region, as indeed in the world at large, was shaped by trade. The area, formerly part of the region known as Greater Syria, served as a link between the Mediterranean world and India and East Asia. The merchants of the region exported oil, grain, textiles, metal work, and pottery through the port cities to Western markets. The linkage role of Lebanon was further enhanced by the nomads of the Syrian and Arabian deserts who visited the cities of Syria to trade. The caravans developed limited routes that often led to the coastal cities of Tripoli, Beirut, Sidon, or Tyre. This created a merchant class and brought wealth to the inhabitants of the region. The trade between East and West led to the development of a cosmopolitan culture in Lebanon's port cities, whose inhabitants became known for their multilingualism, flexibility, moderation, and commercial acumen.

Lebanon is 10,452 sq. km and has 4.3 million people. Most people live in cities, but there are still many small towns in mountains or farming areas. The north tends to be mountainous, the center flat, and the south hilly. Forests, wide rivers, and green valleys help make Lebanon a favorite tourist spot. Winters are snowy in the north and rainy farther south; summers are warm and occasionally hot. Spring and fall often are the favorite times of year because of pleasant weather.
