Writing and the Lebanese War

Elias Khoury is a Lebanese novelist, literary critic, and editor of the Mulhaq, the weekly cultural supplement of the leading Beirut daily, al-Nahar . He was born in 1948, and grew up in the Ashrafiyyeh neighborhood of Beirut. He became a pro-Palestinian militant after enrolling at the Lebanese University in the mid-1960s. In 1971 he wrote his first novel, ' ala Ilaqaat al-Dai'ra (On the Relations of the Circle ). In 1976, He wrote his second work, al-Jabal al-Saghir (The Little Mountain) a series of short 'portraits' of the civil war, based, in part, on Khoury's own experiences, In 1976, he left the armed ranks of the Palestinian movement, although he remained a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause, and began working as deputy editor of the social and political journal Shu'un Falastiniyyeh (Palestinian Affairs ). In 1979, he moved to the leftist daily al-Safir, where he became its literary editor, remaining there until 1991. He has written a number of other books and novels including al-Wujuh al-bayda' (The White Faces), Rahlat Gandhi al-Saghir (The Voyage of Little Gandhi), Abwab al-Madinah (City Gates)

Culture
Lebanon has a lively arts scene, both traditional and contemporary. The national dance, the dabke , is an energetic folk dance. Classical belly dancing still plays an important role at weddings, representing the transition from virgin bride to sensual woman, and is also popular in nightclubs. Traditional Arabic music is created using unharmonised melodies and complex rhythms, often accompanied by sophisticated, many-layered singing. Instruments used include the oud , a pear-shaped string instrument; the tabla , a clay, wood or metal and skin percussion instrument; the nay , a single reed, open-ended pipe with a lovely mellow tone; and the qanun , a flat trapezoid instrument with at least 81 pluckable strings. Literature and poetry have always had an important place in Lebanese culture. One very popular form of poetry is the zajal , in which a group of poets enter into a witty dialogue by improvising verses to songs. The most famous Lebanese literary figure is Khalil Gibran, a 19th-century poet, writer and artist whose work explored Christian mysticism. Contemporary writers include Amin Maalouf, Emily Nasrallah and Hanan Al-Shaykh. Arabic and French are the official language of Lebanon although Arabic is by far the most widely spoken and English is becoming common in business circles. Arabs place great importance on civility and it's rare to see any interaction between people that doesn't begin with profuse greetings, enquiries into the other's health and myriad niceties. As an

Habib C. Malik Before he was exiled from the Soviet Union, the great writer and dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was outspokenly critical of Patriarch Pimen and the Russian Orthodox ecclesiastical hierarchy whenever he sensed they were cozying up to the Communist authorities. After going into forced exile, however, Solzhenitsyn fell silent on this issue. When reminded of his earlier criticisms and urged to continue in that vein, he replied firmly and without hesitation that he no longer felt he enjoyed the moral right to speak out against the perceived errant behavior of the Russian Orthodox Church because he was no longer sharing directly in the daily historical-existential trials and tribulations of his people and his church living under Soviet rule. In other words, criticizing from a distance can be a dangerous business and also risks becoming unethical.

Overview Geography and Climate Lebanon is a small and beautiful country on the Eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It is located at the meeting point of three continents and, as such, has been the crossroads of many civilizations whose traces may still be seen today. Its coastline is about 225 km (150 miles) in length and is, on average, 45 km (30 miles) wide. The total area of the country amounts to 10,452 square km (4,500 square miles). Along the coast are the five famous cities of Beirut, Byblos, Sidon, Tripoli, and Tyre (see interactive map under Tourism). It is bordered in the north and east by Syria and, in the south, by Israel. Lebanon's beauty is illuminated by its geography ( see interactive map under Tourism its narrow coastal plane and two parallel north/south mountains (the mountains of Lebanon and anti-Lebanon). The fertile Bekaa valley, with its Litani and Orontes Rivers, separates these mountains and nourishes the terrain. Residing majestically over the valley, Qournet Assaouda in the north of Mount Lebanon (altitude 3,083 meters or 10,112 feet) and Jabal al-Sheikh in the south of the anti-Lebanon range (altitude 2,814 meters or 9,230 feet) remain the highest peaks in the country. This unparalleled natural splendor is enhanced by Lebanon's moderate, Mediterranean climate. Lebanon enjoys about 300 days per year of sunshine. The winter is mild on the coast and snowy in the mountains, while the summer is hot on the coast and mild on the mountains. It is possible during the spring months to ski in the mountains and swim on the coast in the same day!

History
Lebanon has a heritage almost as old as the earliest evidence of mankind. Its geographic position as a crossroads linking the Mediterranean Basin with the great Asian hinterland has conferred on it a cosmopolitan character and a multicultural legacy. Lebanon has an Arab culture colored by Western influences.
At different periods of its history, Lebanon has come under the domination of foreign rulers, including Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Ottomans. Although often conquered, the Lebanese take pride in their rebellions against despotic and repressive rulers. Moreover, despite foreign domination, Lebanon's mountainous terrain has provided it with a certain protective isolation, enabling it to survive with an identity all its own.
Its proximity to the sea has ensured that throughout its history Lebanon has held an important position as a trading center. This tradition of commerce began with the Phoenicians and continued through many centuries, remaining almost unaffected by foreign rule and the worst periods of internal strife.
The many civilizations have left their traces and markings in numerous cities:

The Baalbeck temples were officially closed in 313 A.D., when Byzantine Emperor Constantine officially closed them. Since then these monuments have gone through many transformations, falling under Arab domination, and the Omayyad, Abbasid, Toulounid, Fatimid and Ayyoubid dynasties. It was sacked by the Mongols in 1260, but later has enjoyed a period of calm and prosperity.
