    105. Coastal Learning Center School
Approved by the state of New Jersey as a private school for classified students with behavioral or multiple disabilities. Offers specialized education programs with therapeutic support for students ages 521.
    http://www.coastallearningcenter.com/
Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation. - John F. Kennedy Coastal Learning Center Inc., founded in 1974 in Lakewood, NJ, has four state approved private day schools serving special needs students ages 5-21. The schools located in Howell Morganville Tuckerton and Little Egg Harbor provide a unique, nurturing, hands-on environment that develops a solid education and strengthens students' personal growth. The program prepares them for return to public school and, ultimately, an independent, productive life after graduation. A variety of teaching styles; close student-teacher relationships; and open communication make us unique. Our self-contained classes, with a maximum of twelve students, allow staff members to get to know each student on a individual basis. At CLC, our main focus is on education and personal growth. We create a secure and accepting environment built on a foundation of trust and mutual respect. This encourages our students to embrace learning - about themselves, their peers and the professionals with whom they interact. Our students learn the importance of accepting differences in race, ethnicity, and culture. They learn to recognize and accept the individual situations of different people.

    Learning Disabilities:
    Brochure from NIMH
Imagine having important needs and ideas to communicate, but being unable to express them. Perhaps feeling bombarded by sights and sounds, unable to focus your attention. Or trying to read or add but not being able to make sense of the letters or numbers. You may not need to imagine. You may be the parent or teacher of a child experiencing academic problems, or have someone in your family diagnosed as learning disabled. Or possibly as a child you were told you had a reading problem called dyslexia or some other learning handicap. Although different from person to person, these difficulties make up the common daily experiences of many learning disabled children, adolescents, and adults. A person with a learning disability may experience a cycle of academic failure and lowered self-esteem. Having these handicapsor living with someone who has themcan bring overwhelming frustration. But the prospects are hopeful. It is important to remember that a person with a learning disability can learn. The disability usually only affects certain limited areas of a child's development. In fact, rarely are learning disabilities severe enough to impair a person's potential to live a happy, normal life. This booklet is provided by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Federal agency that supports research nationwide on the brain, mental illnesses, and mental health. Scientists supported by NIMH are dedicated to understanding the workings and interrelationships of the various regions of the brain, and to finding preventions and treatments to overcome brain dysfunctions that handicap people in school, work, and play.

Message from NLDA President Links Support Portal Welcome to NLDA Nonverbal Learning Disorder, known as NLD, is a neurophysiological disorder orginating in the right hemisphere of the brain. Reception of nonverbal or performance-based information governed by this hemisphere is impaired in varying degrees, including problems with visual-spatial, intuitive, organizational, evaluative, and holistic processing functions. Sue Thompson’s death on April 16th has deprived the NLD community of a gifted scientific observer who was not only imaginative and visionary, but also astute and pragmatic. She translated the neuroscientific rhetoric of ivory tower NLD into user-friendly language that could easily and effectively be used in our homes and schools. Sue’s awareness that people dealing with this complex learning disorder need care and education led to the founding of SHARE Support, Inc., the grass roots organization that laid the groundwork for the NLDA. Referring to the frequent explanations required by some children with NLD, Sue originally titled her first book, I Shouldn’t Have to Tell You. Perhaps you should not have had to, Sue, but we are so very glad you did. All of us whose lives are touched by NLD owe you undying gratitude. May you find eternal life in the accomplishments of people for whom your insight made the difference between failure and success.
