History and Purpose
The Rutgers University School of Law - Camden Bankruptcy Pro Bono Project is one of several initiatives that make up the Law School's Pro Bono Program. The central mission of the entire Pro Bono Program is to provide legal resources which address unmet needs in the surrounding community, with a focus on the city of Camden, and to establish a pattern for future professional involvement in community service. The Program thus serves the dual goals of ameliorating some of the problems in the community of which the Law School is a part, and assisting law students in the development of fundamental lawyering skills.
The Bankruptcy Pro Bono Project, which began in the Fall of 1993, grew out of a concern of United States Bankruptcy Court Judge, Judith H. Wizmur, that a significant number of Southern New Jersey residents were filing pro se petitions for bankruptcy relief, or were not filing because of a lack of pro bono legal representation.
The Project brings together various segments of the legal community, including: Camden Regional Legal Services (CRLS), the Law School, volunteer students, volunteer attorneys, the Camden County Bar Association, and the court system. This has resulted in increased interaction between law students and the local bar, expanded hands on experience for students, pro bono opportunities for attorneys, and most importantly, desperately needed relief for residents of local Southern New Jersey communities.
Clients for the Bankruptcy Pro Bono Project are referred to the Law School's Pro Bono Coordinator through the offices of CRLS, which provides screening for income eligibility. The Coordinator and her assistant set up client appointments and schedule student volunteers to assist Project attorneys. Clients meet with law students and attorney supervisors at the law school during evening hours. In the six years of the Project's operation over 500 clients have met with attorney/student teams. Approximately 240 law students have been trained through the Project. Our current panel of volunteer attorneys numbers over 40.

Welcome to the Career Services Pro Bono page! The Pro Bono Program is designed to encourage and foster community-based volunteer legal service projects. Through pro bono experiences, students have an opportunity to act as volunteer legal interns with public service organizations. The Program allows students to gain valuable experience and establish important contacts, while also providing much needed assistance to those who could not otherwise afford legal help. The Program is open to all law students. Pro bono opportunities require a range of experience levels, allowing even students just beginning their legal education to participate. There are opportunities to match many different interests. In the past, students have interned with groups concerned with the environment, juvenile rights, domestic violence, criminal law, poverty law, family law, labor law, and Indian law. This list only touches the surface of the limitless possibilities available. While most students intern with local organizations, others work nationally, even during the academic year, by communicating by phone and fax with out-of-state organizations.

Welcome!
Pro Bono Students Canada is a national program that was launched at the University of Western Ontario, Faculty of Law in the 1998/1999 academic year. The function of the program is to match law student volunteers with community agencies with a need for legal services but with insufficient resources to compensate legal counsel. Agencies typically involved in Pro Bono Students Canada include public interest and non-profit organizations, tribunals, legal clinics and lawyers working pro bono on a particular case. Law student volunteers complete legal research or other law-related projects for member organizations over the course of the academic year under the supervision of a lawyer mentor. Pro Bono Students Canada originated in Toronto in 1996 and continues to be headquartered there. For information on the national office or to get up to date information on the program in other universities, see the Pro Bono Students Canada national website At Western, as of August 2003, 45 organizations have been involved in Pro Bono Students Canada with over 160 law students completing over 75 pro bono projects for charities in the London Ontario area.

The educational goals of its in-house clinical programs are to educate the student participants to become reflective practitioners who are highly competent, ethical, and sensitive to their pro bono and other social responsibilities. PILI Fellows working at the Law Offices will work on challenging criminal or civil litigation under the close supervision of one or more of seven of the Law Offices' clinical professors, each of whom is an experienced practicing attorney. They will participate in all aspects of the cases to which they are assigned. Thus, fellows will be involved in client contact, litigation strategy sessions, legal research and writing, drafting of pleadings and motions, discovery, settlement, trials or other court proceedings, and etc. The two criminal defense attorneys represent defendants in serious felony cases (including appointed death penalty cases) in the federal and state trial and appellate courts. Three of the civil litigation attorneys concentrate on employment discrimination cases and civil rights matters but handle other types of civil litigation as well. One civil litigation attorney represents low income persons with disputes before the Internal Revenue Service, United States Tax Court, and the United States District Court. One attorney represents clients with Social Security disability issues.

It is Sutherland's policy that all lawyers have an obligation to participate in pro bono legal work. Sutherland has adopted a goal of a minimum of 50 hours per attorney per year to be spent on pro bono matters, in accord with the recommendation of the American Bar Association. Sutherland attorneys record and receive credit for their pro bono time and efforts just as they do for regular, billable matters. Sutherland is also a signatory to the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, a group of large law firms who have committed to contribute annually, at a minimum, an amount of time equal to 3% of billable hours to pro bono work. Sutherland's firmwide Bar and Public Service Committee administers this work. The committee includes partners, counsel and associates, and it both encourages and monitors the firm's pro bono practice. The Committee also organizes a variety of non-legal community involvement activities, such as staffing a local soup kitchen, renovating the homes of needy people, building a Habitat for Humanity house, teaching classes in local high schools, placing attorneys in mentoring programs with area schoolchildren, and organizing clothing and canned food drives, as well as raising tens of thousands of dollars for various area charities. Commitment
Students work on projects for a variety of agencies including non-profit organizations, courts, government agencies, legal service providers, and individual pro bono attorneys. The work must benefit an underserved population in the community and be performed without either compensation or academic credit. Students agree to perform all assignments in a professionally responsible manner which includes maintaining client confidentiality and refraining from giving legal advice to clients.

Sheppard Mullin has a long tradition of providing legal services to persons and community organizations who could otherwise not afford access to legal representation. The Firm believes that part of each attorney's obligation to the community is to provide high-caliber legal services to persons of limited means and to charitable and civic organizations. To achieve firm-wide participation in a manner responsive to local needs and opportunities, the Firm has a Pro Bono Committee consisting of partners and associates from our seven offices. The Committee is responsible for identifying and/or approving projects for Firm representation. Each office receives cases from local referring agencies that pre-screen potential clients. Our attorneys have assisted with problems relating to education, immigration, political asylum, domestic violence, criminal matters, creditor-debtor relations and landlord-tenant relations. In recent years, Sheppard Mullin attorneys have become involved in providing pro bono services outside the litigation arena, including counseling to non-profit developers of affordable housing and "micro businesses," as well as those seeking to preserve historic landmarks. The Firm also actively encourages participation in a variety of community services. Sheppard Mullin supports public television by underwriting local broadcasts of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, as well as other public television programming. In addition, the Firm has contributed more than $1,000,000 in the past five years to a variety of charitable organizations, and has been particularly involved in children's charities. Each holiday season, in lieu of gifts to clients, the Firm donates funds to organizations that provide abused, underprivileged and sick children with medical care, education and shelter.

Riaz Zaman, a summer 2003 legal intern at E-LAW U.S., is a third year law student at Vermont Law School and is interested in environmental and economic justice. E-LAW U.S. relies on the generous support of volunteers, interns, and pro bono experts to help public interest environmental advocates defend our global environment. We need volunteers, interns, and experienced pro bono experts with various skills and interests to expand our capacity to meet the information and resource needs of our partners. Volunteers and interns who work with E-LAW U.S. can gain valuable experience, skills, and information about global environmental issues and meet visiting E-LAW partners. E-LAW U.S. volunteer and intern positions are generally unpaid, but volunteers and interns have obtained academic credit through educational institutions for their work at E-LAW. In some cases, E-LAW U.S. can develop "distance internships" where volunteers work via e-mail from a remote location. If you are outside the U.S., please see our Partners page to link to environmental lawyers and public interest environmental law nonprofit organizations in other countries. Theodore Roosevelt said "no man is above the law, and no man is below it." Yet, the economic reality for those who cannot afford legal services - to start a business, to obtain a fair hearing of their claims or to protect their constitutional rights - is that they do not participate in the economic liberty and justice our system of laws is designed to provide. The goal of our pro bono work is to bring economic liberty and justice to those who otherwise would not have access to it. In doing this profoundly important work, we not only "comfort the disquieted and disquiet the comfortable," in the words of Hon. Abner Mikva, we believe that we also strengthen society and bring deeper meaning to our practice. Our pro bono work is directed into a number of programs that the firm believes achieve our overall pro bono objectives and at the same time provide meaningful legal experience for our attorneys. Many of the pro bono programs the firm now embraces were initiated by associates with a desire to become involved in particular aspects of pro bono legal work. Within reasonable limits, the firm treats pro bono work the same as client billable work in evaluating productivity and establishing annual compensation for our associates. The primary pro bono projects in which the firm's attorneys are actively involved include the following: Circuit Court of Cook County Juvenile Division Children's Pro Bono Project : Working with experienced Juvenile Court trial attorneys from the Northwestern University Law School Bluhm Legal Clinic, our attorneys participate in a court-sponsored pro bono program through which we represent juveniles charged with misdemeanors and felonies. Our work in this program gives us an opportunity to provide basic mentoring to at-risk juveniles and to protect their constitutional rights. In many cases, we find that we are able to give fundamentally good kids another chance to develop into contributing members of society rather than be caught in the downward spiral of recidivistic incarceration.
