Introduction This responsibility is met both by lawyers working fulltime in the public sector and by lawyers in the private sector who provide pro bono service. Pro bono comes from the Latin "pro bono publico" and means "for the public good." In a law school setting, pro bono may have many meanings. For the practice setting, the American Bar Association (ABA) has set forth a lawyer’s pro bono responsibility in Model Rule 6.1 , which encourages lawyers to aspire to render at least 50 hours of pro bono legal services per year without fee or expectation of fee to persons of limited means or to organizations designed primarily to address the needs of persons of limited means. With the legal profession’s core value of access to justice for all as a backdrop, the ABA, representing the bar, and the Association of American Law Schools (AALS), representing the law school community, have taken the position that law schools should encourage and enable all law students to engage in pro bono and public service. In 1996, the ABA amended its Accreditation Standards to provide that "[a] law school should encourage its students to participate in pro bono activities and provide opportunities for them to do so."

Valpo Law Home Academics Pro Bono "Pro Bono Publico" is a legal phrase that literally translates "for the public good; for the welfare of the whole." Law is a calling, a service. The responsibility of every lawyer is to render professional assistance "pro bono." A lawyer may fulfill this responsibility by providing professional services at no fee or at a reduced fee to persons of limited means or to public service or charitable groups or oganizations, by service in activities for improving the law, the legal system, or the legal profession. At Valpo Law, we take this responsibility seriously. We were one of the very first law schools to institute a pro bono graduation requirement, under which every law student must complete a minimum of 20 hours of pro bono service in order to graduate. SEARCH National Pro Bono Resource Centre - Supporting and Promoting Pro Bono Services Since the launch of the National Pro Bono Resource Centre (NPBRC) in August 2002, three core staff, a part-time administrator and several student interns have settled into the White House at the University of New South Wales.
