This website and the staffing for the AALS Pro Bono Project is made possible by a grant from the Open Society Institute. This grant was obtained by the AALS Commission on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities , whose members served from November 1997 to July 1999. The Commission was the first systematic effort by the Association of American Law Schools to address the role of pro bono and public service in legal education. The Commission was established by Deborah L. Rhode, President of the Association of American Law Schools, 1997-1998. The AALS Commission on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities has left three legacies: 1) a report setting forth the Commission's findings and conclusions regarding the state of pro bono in law schools entitled Learning to Serve ¸ 2) the AALS Pro Bono Project, and 3) a Section of AALS dedicated to issues of pro bono and public service. The Report

In 1999, the President of the United States had this to say about these efforts of AALS:

Francisco Prat Errazuriz becomes the first Duke Law student to receive a Certificate of Merit for meeting the new voluntary Pro Bono Pledge.
Duke Law students, faculty, administrators and guest speakers enjoy a break during the overnight Public Interest Retreat. Message from the Associate Dean DukeSpring 2003 Duke Law Magazine features community service. Public Interest is broadly defined at Duke Law School. This Office is for all the students of the school whether or not they expect to spend part of their professional career in the public sector. Lawyers are looked to as leaders in their communities and most are called upon frequently to serve their communities over the course of their careers. Indeed, they are exhorted to do so by the Codes of Professional Responsibility of state bars. Lawyers have many opportunities to serve. The two most obvious ones are careers in the public sector - government and non-profit legal advocacy - and law firm pro bono. However, lawyers also serve as legislators crafting laws, as advisors on non-profit boards, as members of public commissions, and in countless other ways. This public spiritedness of the profession is encouraged and cultivated among Duke Law students. Indeed, most students come to Duke Law already steeped in the ethic of service. These days, the best students are active in community service in high school and college. They do not want to take three years "off" from public service while in law school. Through the Office of Public Interest and Pro Bono, students can maintain their service ethic and engage in intellectual debate on the pressing issues of the day.

The Law Firm Pro Bono Project is the only global effort designed to support and enhance the pro bono culture and performance of major law firms in the United States and around the world. The Project's goal is to fully integrate pro bono into the practice, philosophy, and culture of firms so that larger law firms provide the institutional support, infrastructure, and encouragement essential to fostering a climate supportive of pro bono service and promoting partner and associate participation.
The Project is guided in its work by an Advisory Committee composed of the chairs, executive and managing partners, and senior partners of major law firms.
Project services and products are uniquely tailored and available to larger law firms with 50 or more attorneys. Every large law firm receives a subscription to the Project's bi-monthly newsletter, What's New in Law Firm Pro Bono , and is eligible to attend the Project's Annual Seminar, convocations, and other training programs. Member Law Firms support the Project's work through annual dues and receive a wide range of free and discounted services. Member law firms receive international recognition for their support of

By Andrew Orlowski in San Francisco Published Tuesday 19th August 2003 08:17 GMT Getting in touch with The Register after our article According to the Wall Street Journal "It seemed to me," Moglen told us on Saturday, "the responsible thing is to ask if he'd even said such a thing." Moglen says he emailed Heise to check if he had been misquoted. Why? "This is the first sign of irresponsibility. It sheds disrepute on the lawyer who says that," says Moglen.
      Industrial Strength
"If the defendant pleads that his permission is the GPL, then his distribution is voided by Section Four," says Moglen. That is designed to prevent parties adding additional terms to the GPL. And that simply voids their right to do so. An example has been "click-wrap" licences which add conditions to the basic GPL. This has successfully prevented anyone successfully making free software proprietary.
