Federal Bureau of Investigation The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigates violations of all Federal laws that are not covered in the jurisdiction of other Federal agencies. These investigations may include bank roberies, kidnapping, treason, civil rights violations, extortions, and the assaulting or killing of any Federal Government employee. The FBI runs a national crime lab, the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and maintains a centralized system of fingerprint identification. This is probably the most varied and interesting of all criminal justice careers. Drug Enforcement Administration The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) enforcesstatutes and laws relating to the unlawful distribution and use of narcotics such as heroin, opium, marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogenes, and synthetic (man made) narcotics such as methamphetamines and barbiturates. The main emphasis is on stopping the the narcotics trade at the source both in the United States and abroad. Agents may work a significant amount of their careers undercover. United States Postal Service Inspector The U.S. Postal Service Inspector investigates over 250 different types of illegal activities involving the mail. These may include mail theft, mail fraud, and illegal drug trafficking or money laundering through the mails. The U.S. Postal Service investigative agency is the oldest Federal Law Enforcement agency still in existence.

Significant Points
  • Police work can be dangerous and stressful.
  • Civil service regulations govern the appointment of police and detectives.
  • Competition should remain keen for higher paying jobs with State and Federal agencies and police departments in affluent areas; opportunities will be better in local and special police departments that offer relatively low salaries or in urban communities where the crime rate is relatively high.
  • Applicants with college training in police science or military police experience should have the best opportunities.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top People depend on police officers and detectives to protect their lives and property. Law enforcement officers, some of whom are State or Federal special agents or inspectors, perform these duties in a variety of ways, depending on the size and type of their organization. In most jurisdictions, they are expected to exercise authority when necessary, whether on or off duty. Uniformed police officers Police agencies are usually organized into geographic districts, with uniformed officers assigned to patrol a specific area, such as part of the business district or outlying residential neighborhoods. Officers may work alone, but in large agencies they often patrol with a partner. While on patrol, officers attempt to become thoroughly familiar with their patrol area and remain alert for anything unusual. Suspicious circumstances and hazards to public safety are investigated or noted, and officers are dispatched to individual calls for assistance within their district. During their shift, they may identify, pursue, and arrest suspected criminals, resolve problems within the community, and enforce traffic laws.

In the U.S., the bureau's Special Agents investigate passport and visa fraud, conduct personnel security investigations, issue security clearances, and protect the Secretary of State and many visiting foreign dignitaries. The Bureau also manages the Counter-terrorism Rewards Program , and trains foreign civilian police under the Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program. It also chairs the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) a joint venture between the Department and the U.S. private sector to exchange timely information on security problems with U.S. businesses. The protection of life is the most critical element of the DS mission, and is an absolute requirement for the global conduct of foreign affairs. With the emergence of terrorist coalitions that operate across international borders, the threat of terrorism against U.S. interests is greater than ever. Clearly, we can no longer consider any U.S. mission overseas as being in a low-threat environment.

Law enforcement agencies in the United States come under the jurisdiction of many different authorities at federal, state, county and municipal levels of government. There is no national police force, although there are several federal law enforcement agencies. The best known of these is the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) which is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Justice. It is charged with gathering and reporting facts and compiling evidence in cases involving federal jurisdiction. Also part of the Department of Justice is the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) which is the lead federal agency in enforcing narcotics laws and regulations. Most states maintain police departments but state police force activities are usually concentrated on highway patrol and other traffic work. County governments, of which there are more than 3,000, maintain police forces under the command of a sheriff. There is much variation in the scope of the authority and the size of these forces. In some states, particularly those in the South and West, the county sheriff's office wields considerable power, but in others this power is restricted by the jurisdiction of the city police departments. At local or municipal level, city police departments encompass all areas of police work from traffic control and detection to laboratory and forensic.

Law enforcement agencies say the free use of encryption is a danger to national security
From a computer on the other side of the world, a terrorist is at work. He is not making bombs or planning revolution. He might be remotely accessing the processing control systems of a cereal manufacturer to change the levels of iron and sicken and kill children innocently enjoying their food. He might attack air traffic control systems and cause the collision of two civilian aircraft. He could be doing anything. And he is almost impossible to trace. Meanwhile, on another continent, two drug dealers exchange encrypted e-mails, sealing a deal to swap weapons for heroin. It is scenarios like these that governments fear. Law enforcement agencies say that the electronic age has made crime more sinister - and criminals harder to catch. Electronic messages plotting such crimes can be encrypted so that they are impossible to read.

Nigeria is the hub of African narcotics trafficking, and Nigerian poly-crime organizations continue to expand their role in narcotics trafficking worldwide. Nigerian trafficking organizations control the drug markets of Sub-Saharan Africa, and operate drug distribution networks from strategic locations throughout the world. Nigerians transport a large portion of the heroin abused in the United States; they smuggle South American cocaine to Europe and Africa, especially South Africa, and they export marijuanathe only narcotic cultivated in Nigeriato Europe and other countries in West Africa. Nigerians participate heavily in international drug trafficking. One study found that 65 percent of the heroin seizures of 50 grams or more in British airports came from Nigeria, which was the transit point for 20 percent of all heroin from Southwest Asia. Another study disclosed that 20 percent of the hard drug cases in Britain involved ships of the Nigerian National Shipping Line. By the late 1980s, Nigerians were arrested almost daily in foreign countries, and hundreds languished in foreign jails for drug trafficking.
