Latgale Research Center Geography Home General Information Geography History ... Related Sites Latgale is the easternmost region of Latvia. It is separated from Vidzeme by the Aiviekste and Pededze rivers and from Zemgale by the Daugava River. Latgale is bordered on the east by Russia, and Belarus. Present-day Latgale is smaller than it was 100 years ago because Latgalian territory has twice been taken by Russia. First in 1920 the borders agreed to by Latvia and the R.S.F.S.R left the Latgalian districts of Dryssa and Sebezha in Russia. Then in 1946 Latgale lost additional territory when Stalin forced Latvia to cede Abrene to the USSR. Latgale is known for its lakes. It is popularly known as "The Land of Blue Lakes". It contains about a thousand lakes including Lake Razna which is the largest in all of Latvia. Other important lakes are Luban, Rusona, and Ezezer. Much of Latgale lands lies in the Latgale Highlands while southern Latgale is located in the Eastern Latvian Lowlands. It contains considerable forests (about 30% of the land is forested) and has numerous peat bogs and marshes. Its largest river, the famed Dougava, flows through southern Latgale. Its tributaries are the Aiviekste, the Rezekne, the Dubna, and the Malta. Home Page Site Map

Geography and Economy
by Guidez.net (source: CIA WorldFactBook)
After a brief period of independence between the two World Wars, Latvia was annexed by the USSR in 1940. It reestablished its independence in 1991 following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Although the last Russian troops left in 1994, the status of the Russian minority (some 30% of the population) remains of concern to Moscow. Latvia continues to revamp its economy for eventual integration into various Western European political and economic institutions.
Location: Eastern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea, between Estonia and Lithuania
Climate: maritime; wet, moderate winters
Terrain: low plain Natural resources: minimal; amber, peat, limestone, dolomite, hydropower, arable land In 1999 Latvia, a transitional economy, experienced zero GDP growth as it continued to feel the impact of the August 1998 Russian financial crisis. Latvia officially joined the World Trade Organization (WTrO) in February 1999 - the first Baltic state to join - band was invited at the Helsinki EU Summit in December 1999 to begin accession talks in early 2000. Unemployment reached 9.6% in 1999, up from 9.2% in 1998 and 6.7% in 1997. Privatization of large state-owned utilities, especially the energy sector, faced more delays in 1999, but is expected to accelerate in the next two years. Latvia projects 3.5% GDP growth, 3% inflation, and a 2% fiscal deficit in 2000. Preparing for EU membership by 2003 remains a top foreign policy priority.

A country full of contrasts
Latvia is one of Europe's great "get away from it all" discoveries. With 12,310 rivers and 3,000 lakes the country has many opportunities for boating and walking and just enjoying the outdoors. There are many small medieval towns, country castles, museums and folk parks to be visited.
Check out Riga, a city that has come to life again since the end of Soviet occupation. Superb architecture, from the medieval to the Art Nouveau, an old city that rivals Prague, operas and concerts, an active artistic life, smart shops and intimate restaurants, all testify to her being once again a major European capital. Latvia, a country on the move again
