    LATVIAN HERITAGE SITES
Ethnographic Open-Air Museum in Riga Within the Republic of Latvia, which has an area of 64 589 km sq., and a population of 2 422 946 inhabitants, there are 8325 protected heritage sites. The greater part of these sites are architectural monuments - 3412 architectural sites, 2514 archaeological sites, 2251 artistic sites. However there are only 105 historical sites, and 38 urban building sites. The inclusion of the historic centre of Riga (which includes buildings in the old city and art nouveau area) in the UNESCO world cultural and natural heritage list in 1997 is attestation to the significance of Latvian heritage sites. th See a picture of the Aizkraukle castle mound ), and Jersika. They serve to remind us of the prehistory that is still an important aspect of the development of our identity. The reconstructed village construction (700s to 800s) is a unique archaeological site, as are the three so called velna laivas Reitern and Dannenstern houses in Riga. No less impressive is castle in Eleja built in the Classicism style, the Arsenal complex in Riga, the magnificent Daugavpils fort. The renewal of the Riga town square has begun with the reconstruction of the Renaissance era

Cultural Heritage Theatre, film and photography are also areas where Latvian artists have made an international mark. Ten professional theatres currently exist in Latvia, but the National Theatre was actually the site where Latvia's independence was proclaimed in 1918. Latvian photographers, including Janis Klavins, Viesturs Links and Peteris Jaunzems have won top awards in international photography competitions in the past few years. While the origins of Latvian cinematography date back to the 1920's, the first full length Latvian film was "Zvejnieka dels" (The Fisherman's Son) produced in 1940. Documentaries have had special success and the most famous documentary producers include the Juris Podnieks (well known for documentaries such as "The Soviets", and "Krustacels" (the Stations of the Cross)), Ivars Seleckis for "Skersiela" (Crossroads) and Herc Franks for "Augstaka tiesa" (The Supreme Court). The state owned Riga Film studio once produced several feature films each year, but with the collapse of the Soviet cinematography system and full state funding, the studio is now struggling to survive.

The Latvian Folk Music Collection is a starting place for someone venturing into Latvia's repertoire or seeking to remember a homeland. Latvia's distinct geographic regions likely produce localized song traditions. But these albums give a flavor of the larger setting. Until the mid-1800s, serfdom was still practiced, so the agricultural calendar and lifecycle events (birth, marriage, death) permeate Latvian song collections. A stable linguistic history has preserved songs that are quite old, yet later influences by Roman Catholic and Lutheran religious practices inevitably affected folk and popular song. Independent after WWI, Latvia came under Soviet control following WWII, a time during which folk song was within the ambit of nationalistic ideology and political doctrine.
"Cuci guli mazo bernin" Latvian folklorists have been unusually active and began publishing song collections, which included composed and arranged works, in the 18th and 19th centuries. By 1873 the first Latvian Song Festival took place, an event which inaugurated the role of festivals and broad participation by Latvia's now 2.5 million citizens in their own musical celebrations. Extensive collections of song and music transcriptions have resulted in thousands of items reaching Latvian archives and music repositories, providing ample material for Latvia's cultural education and revival. One of these collections, that of Jekabs Vitolins, contains almost 300 lullabies and was drawn upon for

Theme: Post-war heritage Cultural Heritage in Latvia mainly associates with cultural landscape , archaeological sites, remains of Medieval castles, impressive churches, wooden buildings and Art-Nouveau dwelling houses in Riga as well as such monuments of art as Monument of Freedom. Cultural Heritage of post war period, the buildings of the 50ies and 60ies , created in the period of Soviet regime, are not yet recognised by general public.

The awareness of the recent past should be raised for both - users of the buildings as well as preservators. Sometimes the quandary arises in the society about what kind of the built environment of their childhood or youth years can be prised as the cultural asset of the nation. After the World War II there was an upswing of industrial development and Riga became one of the most significant industrial cities in the USSR. Post-war Cultural Heritage reflects the development of industry and social housing. In Latvia this part of heritage can be formed mainly by the public buildings - theatres, cinemas, clubs, schools and dwelling houses. Some monumental objects, devoted to the sites of World War II, as the Salaspils Nazi concentration camp ensemble and Memorial to Latvian rifleman, now Museum of Occupation, form significant part of the whole European memorial heritage. Typical for the Stalin era is high-rise of Academy of Science, designed by local architects in the style nicknamed "Stalin Baroque" under the control of the USSR officials. Similar type of building beyond Moscow was built only in Riga, Warsaw and Prague. Contemporary architecture of sixties with the open use of natural materials and simple, but innovative forms started with Dzintari concert hall by architect M.Ìelzis in 1960 and was developed by M.Staòa in the school building in Zvejniekciems and Dailes theatre building in Riga. Postmodernism reached Latvia in eighties and some office buildings, dwelling houses and schools were built by J.Skalbergs, A.Skujiòa and T.Timpars.
