    http://vip.latnet.lv/hss/vasks.htm
Andrejs Vasks THE CULTURAL AND ETHNIC SITUATION IN LATVIA DURING THE EARLY AND MIDDLE IRON AGE (1st - 8th Century AD) During the early Iron Age, there were several large regions in what is now Latvia where populations were linked more closely by various economic, personal, religious and, one can assume, adminstative and political contacts. Strengthening of these links facilitated the cultural heterogeneity of various regions within the territory, something that presumably was also caused by ethnic differences. These differences were manifested in burial traditions, ornamentation, and occasionally in tools and pottery. It should be noted that none of these regions lay entirely within Latvia each of them also covered some territory in neighboring countries. The northernmost border of the Latvian territory which was occupied by the ancestors of the Curonians cannot be specified with any precision. Judging from the distribution of gravesites, it probably did not stretch much beyond the Durbe lake. The discovery of a few scattered sites allows specialists to move the border a bit further to the North, perhaps to Kazdanga. Even farther to the North up to the Abava river and the Lower Venta, there is a broad zone in which archaeologists have found no traces of the early Iron Age. Apparently this was a sparsely populated region which separated Balts to the South from Baltic Finns to the North. In the territory which was populated by the ancestors of Curonians, no paleoanthropological materials from the early Iron Age have been discovered, so there is no possibility to provide a physical characterization of the inhabitants from that time. Based on various indirect evidence, we can conclude that the ancestors of the Curonians had a gracile and narrow-faced anthropological type (Èesnis1985).

The integration of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania into the European Union strengthens the cultural influence and the economic weigth of northern Europe, Mattias Akselsson reports from Sweden From two millennia of war to a new era of cooperation
Only 25 years ago a simple holiday tour around northern Europe would have been much more complicated than just getting on the plane. When anyone in the United States could move, live and work freely from snowy Washington to sunny Florida, Europe still was a complicated puzzle of dozens of travel visas, stamps, tolls, endless permits and small currencies. The history-rich Baltic capitals were cut-off the rest of the world by courtesy of the Soviet Union and the Nordic countries meant for the average person a remote and isolated territory near the north pole.
It took the Europeans two thousand years and many shameful wars to realize that people do have a better life in peace than in war and that cooperation creates more development than isolation. As the European countries leave aside their historical rivalries and parochial pride, many are now enjoying the benefits of integration and economic cooperation. Like in the US, anyone in the EU can now also move, live and work freely from snowy Finland to sunny Spain: British pensioners can retire in France, Portuguese students can attend Polish universities, Swedish citizens can work in Austria, etc.

    Latvia History and Culture
History Archaeologists have found traces of human settlements and older human culture, approximately 10 000 BC. Nomadic tribes came into these territories, during the migration from the Southwest. This culture had its origin from the mid–stone age, human settlements in Ahrensburg in the region of Schleswig–Holstein in Germany. This early European culture was leading until approximately 3000 BC, when other nations from the East began to settle in the territory of Latvia. The cultures coming from the East are the ancestors of Finns, Estonians and Livs (a very small nation living in the northwestern part of Latvia, now an ethnic minority). Approximately around 2000 BC, Baltic tribes came into Latvia, and are regarded as the ancestors of present day Latvians and Lithuanians.

Panoramic view of the centre of Riga Today, 77 towns and cities are located in the relatively small Republic of Latvia. Latvian cities have undergone diverse changes throughout the centuries. Some of them, like Straupe, Rauna, and Koknese have lost their former glory and status, however, the city of Daugavpils has changed its location. Latvian cities have developed and grown around trade and traffic routes, nowadays, more so around significant manufacturing facilities, (Olaine, Aizkraukle). Some former cities have been swallowed up by their larger expanding neighbours, for instance, Gostini has joined Plavinas, Krustpils has joined Jekabpils, Griva has joined Daugavpils.
The development of Latvian cities commenced in the 900s- 1100s, as it did in the rest of Northern Europe. During this time wide settlements developed, particularly in significant farming and trading centres, more often near a harbour. These are considered to be the earliest Latvian cities, some of which had areas of up to 15 hectares, (at the castle mounds of Daugmale, Jersika, and Mezotne). The development of these cities was cut short by the invasion of the crusaders in the 1200s, the development of new political and social organisations, and the introduction of a new culture.

    Language and Culture
Latvia Table of Contents The Latvian language, like Lithuanian, belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Latvian is an inflective language, written in the Latin script and influenced syntactically by German. The oldest known examples of written Latvian are from catechisms published in 1585. Because of the heavy influx of ethnic Russians and other Slavs after World War II, nearly one-half of the country's population does not speak Latvian (see table 22, Appendix). Most ethnic Latvians speak Russian, however, and many also know German (see table 23, Appendix). Latvian culture is strongly influenced by folklore and by the people's attachment to their land. Christian rituals often are intermingled with ancient customs, and pagan geometric symbols remain evident in the applied arts. Ancient folksongs, or dainas , that were first collected and published in the mid-nineteenth century, most notably by Krisjanis Barons, are a cultural treasure. In 1888 the great epic poem Lacplesis (Bear Slayer) by Andrejs Pumpurs was published, marking the dawn of modern Latvian literature. Janis Rainis (1865-1929) usually tops the list of Latvia's greatest writers. One of the most prominent figures in Latvian literature today is the poet Imants Ziedonis, who also has established a fund to promote the development of Latvian culture.
