Culture
Few Latvian artistic figures or works are internationally known. The country's literature was kickstarted in the 19th century with the writing of a national epic poem called Lacplesis (The Bear Slayer) by Andrejs Pumpurs, which was based on traditional folk tales. The giant of Latvian literature is Janis Rainis, whom Latvians claim might have enjoyed the acclaim of Shakespeare or Goethe had he written in a less obscure language. Latvian verses known as dainas are often short and poetic and have been compared to the Japanese haiku. In the 19th century, great collections of folk lyrics and tunes were made by Krisjanis Barons. In fact, over 1.4 million folk lyrics and 30,000 tunes have been written down in Latvia. The first major Latvian painter was Janis Rozentals, who painted scenes of peasant life and portraits in the early 20th century. Vilhelms Purvitis and Janis Valters were the outstanding landscape artists of the time. Karlis Rudevics, a leading figure in Latvia's Gypsy community, is known for his translations of Gypsy poetry and his striking paintings inspired by Gypsy legends. Latvian is one of only two surviving languages of the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family, and speakers of Latvian regard it as an endangered species. Just over half the people in the country speak it as their first language. The language spoken in east and west Latvia has dialectical differences from the standard Latvian spoken in the central portion of the country.

Country Info Latvia Introduction Latvia General Data Latvia Maps Latvia Culture ... Latvia Time and Date Latvia Culture Back to Top The Latvian language, like Lithuanian, belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Latvian is an inflective language, written in the Latin script and influenced syntactically by German. The oldest known examples of written Latvian are from catechisms published in 1585. Because of the heavy influx of ethnic Russians and other Slavs after World War II, nearly one-half of the country's population does not speak Latvian. Most ethnic Latvians speak Russian, however, and many also know German. Latvian culture is strongly influenced by folklore and by the people's attachment to their land. Christian rituals often are intermingled with ancient customs, and pagan geometric symbols remain evident in the applied arts. Ancient folksongs, or dainas , that were first collected and published in the mid-nineteenth century, most notably by Krisjanis Barons, are a cultural treasure. In 1888 the great epic poem Lacplesis (Bear Slayer) by Andrejs Pumpurs was published, marking the dawn of modern Latvian literature. Janis Rainis (1865-1929) usually tops the list of Latvia's greatest writers. One of the most prominent figures in Latvian literature today is the poet Imants Ziedonis, who also has established a fund to promote the development of Latvian culture. Latvia has a number of theaters (mostly in Riga), an opera, a symphony orchestra, and a permanent circus. Riga's Dome Cathedral houses one of the largest and most famous organs in the world. The works of many prominent Latvian artists are displayed at the National Fine Arts Museum and at the many art galleries in Riga. Other museums include the Museum of History and Navigation and the Museum of Natural History. There are 168 public libraries in the capital. Books and periodicals are published in Latvian and in other languages.

    A country full of contrasts
Latvia is one of Europe's great "get away from it all" discoveries. With 12,310 rivers and 3,000 lakes the country has many opportunities for boating and walking and just enjoying the outdoors. There are many small medieval towns, country castles, museums and folk parks to be visited.
Check out Riga, a city that has come to life again since the end of Soviet occupation. Superb architecture, from the medieval to the Art Nouveau, an old city that rivals Prague, operas and concerts, an active artistic life, smart shops and intimate restaurants, all testify to her being once again a major European capital. Jurmala culture. The organization of services and amenities was in the handof the Resort Society, the first one being that of Dubulti, founded 1851.
    http://www.eurotravelling.net/latvia/jurmala/jurmala_culture.htm
ADVERTISING INFORMATION Jurmala - Culture On the beach special-huts were built, where on could change and leave one's clothes. Gangway planks were made to spare the swimmer wading through the shallow water, until he reaches a depth sufficient for swimming. They were built in such a way that they could be reached at by carriage, and steps enabled the swimmer to dive comfortably. Every swimming place could offer quite a number of these amenities, which was a sign of their popularity. Their length exceeded a hundred metres, and contained several huts. These constructions were in use up to World War I. A lot was done for organizing sea bathing. At the beginning of the 19th century bathing suits had not yet been invented. Therefore separate bathing hours were established for men and women. In order to avoid possible misunderstandings special flags were used - red for men's hours in Dubulti, blue for the ladies' hours. A bell use also to be rung. The duration of these times was not evenly distributed - four hours for ladies and about twice as much for gentlemen. The majority of the inhabitants of Riga used to go to Jurmala on Sundays and did not hire any summerhouses. Only about half of the constantly living holidaymakers were inhabitants of Riga.
