LATIN LANGUAGE
LATIN LANGUAGE. 4. Position of the Italic GroupThe Italic group, then, when compared with the other seven main families of Indo European speech, in respect of their most significant differences, ranges itself thus: (ii.) Indo-European Aspirates.Like Greek and Sanskrit, but in contrast to all the other groups (even to Zend and Armenian), the Italic group largely preserves a distinction between the IndoEuropean mediae aspiratae and mediae (e.g. between Ind.-Eur. dh and d, the former when initial becoming initially regularly Lat. f as in Lat. frc-i id. Umb. feia, faciat ], beside Gr. f-OvK-a Id. Sans. da-dha-ti, he places ], the latter simply d as in domus, Gr. Iuov). But the aspiratae, even where thus distinctly treated in Italic, became fricatives, not pure aspirates, a character which they only retained in Greek and Sanskrit. (iii.) Indo-European .With Greek and Celtic, Latin preserved the indo-European , which in the more northerly groups (Germanic, Balto-Slavonic), and also in Indo-Iranian, and, curiously, in Messapian, was confused with l. The name for olive-oil, which spread with the use of this commodity from Greek (~aiFov) to Italic speakers and thence to the north, becoming by regular changes (see below) in Latin first ~olaivom, then 5leivom, and then taken into Gothic and becoming alev, leaving its parent form to change further (not later than 100 1i.c.) in Latin to oleum, is a particularly important example, because (a) of the chronological limits which are implied, however roughly, in the process just described, and (b) of the close association in time of the change of o to a with the earlier stages of the sound-shifting (of the indo-European plosives and aspirates) in German; see Kretschmer, Esnleit. p. ff6, and the authorities he cites.

83. Latin: The Universal Language Of The Catholic Church
The hatred of the latin language is innate in Liturg. I 402) The same thought appears in the Encyclical Mediator Dei ( 60) The use of the latin language
http://www.tldm.org/News5/latin.htm
Latin: the universal language of the Catholic Church... "It was the will of the Eternal Father that one universal language be used along with, in comparison with, together with the language of the land. This universal language, Latin, befit and was chosen by the Eternal Father as a universal language for the universal Church, the Roman Catholic Church under the leadership of Pope Paul VI, the successor of Peter....” Our Lady of the Roses, April 10, 1976 A recent Vatican document issued on March 25, 2004 entitled, On Certain Matters To Be Observed Or To Be Avoided Regarding The Most Holy Eucharist , states that "priests are always and everywhere permitted to celebrate Mass in Latin." (#112) Fr. William C. Van Breda, O.S.A. writes: At a time when the Church is passing through an era of crisis and a period of doctrinal disarray, when the centers of higher learning proclaim themselves independent of the Holy See, a remark of Dom Gueranger, O.S.B., on the use of Latin, written more than a century ago, may gain again some curious significance. "The hatred of the Latin language is innate in the hearts of all the enemies of Rome; they perceive in it the universal bond of all Catholics and the arsenal of orthodoxy; against all sectarian subtleties..." (Inst. Liturg. I 402) The same thought appears in the Encyclical Mediator Dei (#60): "The use of the Latin language ... is a manifest and beautiful sign of unity as well as an effective antidote for any corruption of doctrinal truth." So it is no coincidence that the doctrinal dissenters, the moral muddlers and the loathers of Latin are lodging at the same address. (

TECERTEESSEINSANUMSIHOCLEGERETEMPTESEXISTIMOSEDTEMULTUMLAUDO. Somehow I find myself reading Latin and Greek and enjoying it. It is exciting to get inside the mind of somebody writing 2000 years ago. Imagine yourself reading a speech written before the birth of Christ by Cicero, the most eloquent Roman orator, or reading Julius Caesar's own account of the wars that he fought or reading the original story that inspired Alexander the Great to overthrow the grand Persian Empire with a relatively small army.
