    27. A Note On The Latin Language
Latin has been used as a living language from as early as 500 BC to the Vatican today, remarkable record. THE latin language. Latin
    http://community.middlebury.edu/~harris/LatinBackground/LatinLanguage.html
    THE LATIN LANGUAGE
Latin is known from as early as 500 B.C., in and inscription on a gold fibula or safety-pin, which reads: MANIOS MED FHEFHAKED NUMASIO "Manius (the maker) me made for Numerius (the recipient)" This hardly looks like Latin except to this linguist, but by 300 B.C. Latin appears in a form which we can recognize, and its history can be divided into various stages: a) ARCHAIC, as used in ancient inscriptions on stone, in the comedies of Plautus, in fragments of other early writers from the 3 rd century B.C., and in the comedies of Terence in the following century. The inscriptions are the better index of what Latin of this period was like, since Roman Comedy was somewhat edited over the course of time as it became part of the required reading in Roman school-system. b) LITERARY, whether earlier (for example, Lucretius, Catullus, Cicero, and Caesar), Early Empire (Vergil, Horace, Propertius, Ovid) or Middle Empire (Juvenal, Persius, Pliny the Younger, Suetonius and Tacitus. Petronius's novel The Satyricon, written partly in vernacular or "vulgar" Latin, represents something of a surprise in this august company.. c) CHRISTIAN, starting from Roman-sounding Minucius Felix down through the clearly Christian writers Lactantius and St. Augustine. There is a vast amount of writing in this area, Migne's collection of the Church Fathers' writings has not only huge size, but a great deal of cultural and sociological interest, beside the obvious value to theologians.

    http://www.hyw.com/books/history/Latin_La.htm
Latin Language Latin was the native language of the Romans, who spread it petty much throughout their empire. After the collapse of Rome , the language "died." Actually, Latin didn't really die, it just turned into Italian, French, Spanish, and several other languages. Or, more accurately, it turned into dozens of local dialects, which gradually merged to form those more familiar languages. This dialect formation had been going on for centuries. Indeed, educated Romans had often bemoaned the increasinly incomprehensible versions of Latin which were developing in the provinces. The dialects evolved through the absorbtion by the local Latin speakers of words and grammar from the conquered peoples. Although the barbarians who overran the empire were mostly unable to impose their own language on the, by then, romanized locals, they did effect numerous changes in the local form of Latin. As a result, by Charlemagne 's day (c. 800), the changes had become so great that in much of Europe the common people could no longer understand sermons in Church, albeit that they were being delivered in what was once Vulgar (low class) Latin As a result, the Emperor decreed that henceforth sermons were to be in the "lingua latina rustica " (the country-people's Latin). In other words, preach to the people in the language spoken in the area. It is

    Latin language (Lingua Latina)
In the 5th century BC, Latin was just one of many Italic languages spoken in central Italy. Latin was the language of the area known as Latium (modern Lazio), and Rome was one of the towns of Latium. The earliest known inscriptions in Latin date from the 6th century BC and were written in various versions of the Greek alphabet, which was brought to to Italy by Greek colonists. Rome gradually expanded its influence over other parts of Italy and then over other parts of Europe. Eventually the Roman Empire stretched across a wide swathe of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Latin was used throughout the empire as the language of law, administration and increasingly as the language of everyday life. Literacy was common among Roman citizens and the works of great Latin authors were read by many. Meanwhile in the eastern Mediterranean, Greek remained the lingua franca and well-educated Romans were familiar with both languages. In fact the earliest surviving examples of Latin literature are Latin translations of Greek plays, and Cato's farming manual, which dates from 150 BC.

...this page is dedicated to Latin and Latin only! It is here to inform all about the history and importance of Latin. The following is the research paper I wrote for my Exhibition Project back in 8th grade and you're looking at the project itself. But never fear, there are interesting things after my long, boring paper. Stick around and see for yourself. Feel free to sign my guestbook at the end of my page...actually, it's encouraged. I apologize for all the annoying pop-ups and adds, but I had no budget for the project so Tripod it was. Latin is a dead language
As dead as it can be
    It killed all the Romans
    And now it's killing me
All are dead who wrote it
All are dead who spoke it
    All die who learn it
Blessed death - they earn it
-Unknown Latin Have you ever found yourself telling a friend or relative, “ Carpe diem,” (‘seize the day’) and wondered where it came from? Well, many people might think that it is Spanish, but in truth it is Latin (Gill 2). There is also the fact that Spanish, being one of the Romance languages, is derived from Latin. You may also have heard quid pro quo, ex post facto, ad hoc, and de facto. Latin has had a tremendous influence on several languages. Do you ever wonder how or why? The first thing to explore is where Latin started out. It grew out of the tongue that was originally brought by the Indo-European people who migrated to eastern and southern Italy around the end of the Trojan War (1193 BC). It evolved into Latin and then was spoken mainly by the Romans in their city of Rome and the region around it. As the Romans were increased their mighty empire, Latin slowly expanded to the remaining sector around the western Mediterranean Sea. The following are the different periods of ancient literary Latin: the Early Period, the Golden Age, the Silver Age, and the Late Latin Period. Each period changed Latin and how more forms were added to the language. There was also Medieval Latin and Modern Latin. Finally, a look at what the Latin language has become at the end of the 20th century: how we use it and what we think of it.
