    Context:
The school, Vinton Elementary, is situated in a suburb of Roanoke,
Virginia. The school is quite old, about thirty years in age, and, therefore, does not
receive as much attention as the other schools in the district. However, the
parents are concerned about their children and many attempt to participate in
outings, when their busy schedules allow. Since, the economic status of the
community is lower to middle class, many of the parents work during the day to
support their families. As for the administration, they are supportive but, are also
overwhelmed with work. They work diligently trying to obtain extra funding for the school
to support new programs and perhaps expand the school, to deal with the problem of overcrowding that has been occurring for the past five years. Group characteristics: I, Ms. O’Dom, teach a 3rd grade classroom of twenty
students. Within the class there are eleven girls and nine boys. As already stated, these children come from lower to middle class income homes. They are

Lesson Plan Title: Ferdinandus Taurus Language: Latin Level: st year Grades: Program Type: High School, block schedule Number of Students in Class: Description: Teacher will read aloud the story of Ferdinandus Taurus a Roberto Lawson depictus Latine ab Elizabeth Hadas reditus (Ferdinand the Bull by Roberto Lawson) to the class, showing the pictures that go along with the text. Previously-copied overheads, showing both text and pictures, will then be shown in succession. Students will work with the teacher to translate the text. The students will use English cognates and the pictures to help them translate the Latin words into English. Next, the students will work together as a class to recognize as many patterns with the word endings as they can (example: -us for masculine nouns, - nt for plural verbs, -re for infinitive verbs, etc.) The teacher will explain the patterns and introduce noun, adjective, and verb endings. This is only an introduction, so explanations will be brief and simple, explaining how the endings of Latin words tell them what the words are doing in the sentence and what else to expect in the sentence. Thus, introducing how to

Rational: Baleros are an excellent interest stimulator for students. The Spanish language becomes a more interesting and acceptable subject for students when practiced with Balero. Numbers, words, phrase and sentence structures all become easier to remember because the Balero is something real, physical and interesting that students can associate with the language. Objective / Lesson Overview / Goals Teaching language and culture while having fun. Students learn Spanish while playing with baleros. Achieve better retention of Spanish and better student / teacher relations. Teach balero skills along with course material. Time Needed: Baleros can be an activity before class begins and right before it ends. Also lunch period, break periods, a portion of study period, after school or any appropriate time given your schools scheduling can be utilized. Use some class time, 5 to 15 min. 3 to 5 times a week for instruction, competition and challenges where the teacher can supervise.

    By - Nelson Trias
    Primary Subject - Language Arts
    Grade Level - 11, 12
Ode I-XI "Carpe Diem" Quintus Horatius Flaccus Carpe Diem and the art of seduction in poetry The most famous of Horace's odes uses agricultural metaphors to urge us to embrace the pleasures available in everyday life instead of relying on remote aspirations for the future - hence his immortal motto "Carpe Diem", or "pluck the day." Latin: "Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero." English: "Seize the day, put no trust in the morrow!" Ode 1.11: Tu ne quaesieris, scire nefas, quem mihi, quem tibifinem di dederint, Leuconoe, nec Babylonio stemptaris numeros. ut melius, quicquid erit, pati, seu pluris hiemes seu tribuit Iuppiter ultimam, quae nunc oppositis debilitat pumicibus mare Tyrrhenum: sapias, uina liques, et spatio breuispem longam reseces. dum loquimur, fugerit inuidaaetas: carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero. Ode 1.11: Don't ask (it's forbidden to know) what final fate the gods have given to me and you, Leuconoe, and don't consult Babylonian horoscopes. How much better it is to accept whatever shall be, whether Jupiter has given many more winters or whether this is the last one, which now breaks the force of the Tuscan sea against the facing cliffs. Be wise, strain the wine, and trim distant hope within short limits. While we're talking, grudging time will already have fled: seize the day, trusting as little as possible in tomorrow.

    97. Ocean Planet:Lesson Plan 2

    http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/OCEAN_PLANET/HTML/education_lesson2.html
    Words from the Ocean
    Teacher Background
It may seem strange, but many of the words we use every day come from maritime cultures. After all, until very recently in our country's (and the world's) history, most long-distance travel took place across the seas. Many of our ancestors came to the United States on ships, and most of the first settlements they founded were ports. They depended on the ocean for food, trade, and news from their home countries. In fact, it is hard to find a city or large community in the United States that is not close to a major body of water. So, it makes sense that many words in our language reflect our ocean culture, both past and present. The ties between modern language and the sea are strong, and the origins of many words and expressions are often clear. For example, the meaning of phrases such as Don't give up the ship, Like a fish out of water, and Take the wind out of his sails seem almost obvious. Even the name of our country comes from an ocean map maker (Amerigo Vespucci), and our nation's capital, the District of Columbia, is named after the famous explorer Christopher Columbus. However, the origins of many words and phrases are not as obvious and require some understanding of life at, and close to, the sea: At the helm, Batten down the hatches, Blow over, Down the hatch, Learn the ropes, Flotsam and jetsam, Full speed ahead, Get underway, Get the drift, Keel over, Make headway, On deck, Out of Commission, and Go off the deep end.
