    NOW AVAILABLE!!! THE LEARNABLES!!!
The Learnables is a TERRIFIC immersion program available in a number of languages:
Spanish, French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Hebrew, Czech and English. NOTE: In the first year, we are NOT concentrating on speaking, but on LISTENING! This is truly the way to get used to the language. When you were a child, you listened for YEARS before you spoke the language. This operates with the same concept, but obviously not for as long a period of time. You, as a parent, do NOT need to know the language. You just need to take the time to listen with your student for 20 minutes or so a day! I was so impressed with this program I HAD to add it to the website!

Subject Area: This topic may be covered in Spanish, English and even in History classes. Instructional Goal: The instructional goal for this lesson was to introduce the learner to Mexico's culture, people, language and celebration of traditions. Each student had to develop their own Cultural Report Slide Show. Submitted By Monica Enriquez, Spanish Teacher *student examples Rationale Supply List Learning Strategies Communicate Results ... Career Connections Rationale: To introduce Spanish I and II students to information about the Hispanic culture. Performance Objectives: Students will use technology to research and create Hispanic cultural reports on Hispanic countries and important Hispanic people. Instructional Strategies: Note from teacher: Students will be encouraged to do several activities on this topic. Below are ideas that I have used with my students and have been very fun and very successful. For the past three years that I have been teaching, I have assigned a Cultural Report to each of my students. My first level Spanish classes were assigned a country in which they had to research, type two pages, and present. The student's material including visual aides to their classmates. I video taped each of their presentations and once every one had completed their cultural reports, I allowed them to view their recorded presentations in class. They enjoyed watching themselves on television!

    http://pao.cnmoc.navy.mil/educate/neptune/lesson/language/origin.htm
    Ocean Words Origin
Language Arts - Grade (middle school)
Teachers: The purpose of this activity is to help students understand word origins using ties between modern language and maritime cultures. Objectives:
  • Identify how the modern meaning of several words have changed from the sense they originally had in maritime cultures. Recognize how the ocean's prominence in our culture has shaped our language. Create a hypothesis about the original ocean related meanings of everyday words.
  • Teacher Background: Many of the words used every day have their origins in maritime cultures. Considering that it wasn't until this century that continent to continent travel took place on ships, many of our ancestors traveled to the United States on ships. Thus, many of the first settlements founded were ports. These settlements depended on the ocean for food, trade, travel, and news from their home countries. It only makes sense that many words reflect this past and present ocean culture. Some phrases seem obvious.
    • Don't give up the ship Like a fish out of water Take the wind out of his sails
The name of our country is taken from an ocean map maker
