The political, economical and cultural implications of the ever growing number of immigrants from Latin American countries into the US, has raised the issue of the future intellectual and political influence of the Hispanic community. The rapid growth of the Hispanic community suggests that American Jews should seek a better understanding of Jewish history within the Hispanic community. Current immigration to the US includes large number of youngsters, both Jews and non-Jews with little command of English. These youngsters will not have the opportunity to learn about the Holocaust in school unless we provide teachers with adequate Spanish language teaching materials. Immigrants from Latin America bring little knowledge about the Holocaust from their countries, a topic barely present in formal education throughout the continent. Most countries in Latin America do not include a separate course of study on the Holocaust within the curricula of middle schools and high schools. If at all addressed, the subject tends to be confronted superficially and teachers have little preparation for the "unteachable." As professor Ilan Stavans from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, explains in

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Gallup polls indicate that Latin AmericaMexico, Central America, South America, and the independent countries of the Caribbeanis a region about which United States citizens are poorly informed (Glab 1981). Yet for practical reasons of politics and economics, as well as cultural and historical reasons, United States citizens should be well informed about Latin America. This Digest considers the present status of Latin American studies in elementary and secondary schools. It discusses the need and rationale for Latin American studies, effective teaching techniques, and resources to supplement textbooks which treat Latin America inadequately. THE PRESENT STATE OF TEACHING ABOUT LATIN AMERICA Social studies textbooks and media often present an incomplete or biased portrait of the countries comprising Latin America. Newspapers and television news programs tend to focus on such spectacular events as earthquakes, terrorism, coups, and American foreign policy related to the region. "It is rare to find stories on the arts, humanities, or culture of Latin America" (Glab 1981).

Cultural Resources for Mexican American Education. ERIC Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Even though Mexican Americans are the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S., their history and literature receive limited attention in schools. Incorporating Mexican American culture and history into the curriculum should help minimize cultural myopia characteristic of many students and cultural alienation that frequently contributes to school failure by Mexican American students (Escamilla, 1996). This Digest summarizes the contents of a number of helpful resources, most of which are on-line, and includes both academic and commercial sites.

The Outreach Program's Resource Library Catalog describes the materials you may borrow from the library, including books, curriculum guides, posters, videos, "traveling suitcases," and more. Below is information that should help you understand the borrowing process and how best to use this catalog.
How do I find the best resource for my needs?
We have found that most of our borrowers approach classroom discussions of Latin America on a country-by-country or regional basis. As a result, we have organized the catalog by country and regional areas of Latin America. Within each geographic category, you will find subcategories based on resource type (children's literature, curriculum guides, scholarly books, videos, etc.) Should you need further guidance in locating items appropriate for your objectives, you may consult with members of the Outreach staff.

Teaching the History of Race in Latin America
By Julio Cesar Pino Contributing Editor's Note: This essay not only delineates a structure and language for teaching about race in Latin America, it also represents a useful introduction for historians looking to strengthen the Latin America portion of their world civilization surveys.
The Precolonial Triple Heritage
A course on race relations in Latin America should start with a broad survey of the indigenous, Iberian, and African populations on the eve of conquest, emphasizing their cultural uniqueness and also the political limits to their view of themselves and outsiders as members of a separate race. calpuli in Central Mexico and ayllu Spain is also a modern invention. The ruling class of hidalgos (nobles) made money through pillage and other forms of extralegal expansion. Cultural Scrapbook Welcome to the front page for the Cultural Heritage Initiative for Community Outreach (CHICO) based at the University of Michigan School of Information . CHICO projects celebrate the arts and cultural expressions within and across communities. These communities may be as nearby as the projects engaged in by the "Students on Site" or as far-reaching as the communities addressed in more global studies, such as the archaeological exhibits about "Foods of the Ancient World" or the exhibit about the 500-year history of African people in the Americas. CHICO projects focus on engaging practitioners in the arts, and presenters of the arts, with students of all ages and general audiences. CHICO team members are graduate students at the University of Michigan's School of Information. Team members work with partners and collaborators in schools, art institutions, and lively arts organizations, including University of Michigan departments, K-12 schools as well as local, regional, and national museums and public libraries. On these pages, you will find topics ranging from the extensive collection of Yup'ik masks and stories, a project done in collaboration with the National Museum of the American Indian, to the exploration in "Stylistic Journey" of how new technologies are shaping museum visits and experiences. Many of the CHICO websites include resource materials for K-12 students and teachers, and all are invited to explore in greater depth the topics here presented.
