Agee, Philip. Inside the Company: CIA Diary. Harmondsworth, Middlesex, England: Penguin Books, 1975. 640 pages.
In 1968 Philip Agee was finally disgusted with his dirty work as a CIA officer in Ecuador, Uruguay, and Mexico. He submitted a letter of resignation and immediately slipped into Cuba, then went to France and Britain. As he wrote his memoirs while scraping by on handouts, he frequently wondered if some of the people who were helping him could be trusted. The answer was "no" a typewriter that one friend loaned him was discovered to contain a homing transmitter. Finally his book "Inside the Company" was published in 1975, launching his career as history's most celebrated anti-CIA activist. The CIA kept harassing Agee, even though he retains his U.S. citizenship and has never been charged with a crime. He was expelled from Britain, France, and Holland, and his U.S. passport was revoked in 1979. Today he lives in Germany, is still trying to get his passport back, and does speaking tours on U.S. college campuses.
"Inside the Company" became an instant international bestseller, with many printings in many languages. It is universally regarded as accurate and reliable, and is still widely available. Essentially a reconstructed month-by-month diary of his CIA work, it names the people he worked with and provides a disgusting chronicle of the dirty tricks used by the CIA to keep American interests secure.

A global image on the way down Brian Knowlton/IHT International Herald Tribune
Thursday, December 5, 2002 U.S. is blamed for others' economic and social misery WASHINGTON The global image of the United States has suffered a dramatic bruising in the past two years, most seriously in Muslim countries but also to a surprising extent among many traditional allies, a major new opinion survey has found. The souring attitudes toward the United States were matched by broad discontent with world economic and social conditions, the survey found.
‘‘Since 2000, favorability ratings for the United States have fallen in 19 of the 27 countries where trend benchmarks are available,’’ said a report from the nonpartisan Pew Research Center which, in association with the International Herald Tribune, surveyed 38,000 people in 44 countries in late summer and early fall.
While majorities in nearly every country supported the U.S.-led war on terrorism, U.S. threats of war against Iraq appear to have heightened concerns, recorded in earlier surveys, about an American foreign policy seen as overly aggressive and insufficiently concerned with the interests of friends and allies.

Historically, indigenous people are the pure-blooded descendants of the original inhabitants of the Americas. But few would accept a racial definition today. Many pure-blood Indians deny their origins to speed their assimilation and to blunt fierce racism. Millions of indigenous people now live in towns and cities: hundreds of thousands are completely bi- or even tri-lingual; tens of thousands have university degrees and professional jobs. A Conversation with Horacio Salinas October 6, 1999 CLAS : Tell us how Inti Illimani was formed. Horacio Salinas : Our group has a Bolivian name. It demonstrates our interest in going beyond our particular country and our particular music. There is one person who was instrumental to the spirituality of the movement which we call [the chilean new song], of which we formed a part, and that was Violeta Parra. Violeta Parra was someone who for the first time linked the music to the problems of people. Before that, the popular music [of Chile] tended to be descriptive, about scenery, it was devoid of any type of conflict. She sang the history of the people. Violeta Parra also was the first folklorist who I believe took folklore further, she in fact invented rhythms and freely incorporated new instruments. For example she played the Venezuelan cuatro , which is not from our culture, and the Bolivian charango , and therefore she gave us a model, which was very important and used by other musicians, to create and invent a different music, learning from the music of Latin America.

    On Blessings and Commemoration
It seems that part of the fragility and brevity of life requires us to mark passages with time. The recent 60th Anniversary of D-Day, last year's 40th Anniversary of the Kennedy Assassination, everyone's periodic high school and college reunions, etc. Now it's time for one of mine. It has been nearly ten years since this photo of M©rcia and me was taken: We had been married two weeks at that time after knowing each other for only four months. We were still working through some of the getting to know you phase, compounded by the cultural differences inherent in our relationship. Fortunately, I was welcomed by her wonderful family when I went to Brazil the first time for the religious wedding in year to the day later (I remember remarking to a friend on my second anniversary, "This is the first June 10th in three years that I'm not getting married!"). By the time this next photo was taken, during we made after her sister's wedding in 1998, I was just another member of her huge family. (By the way, if you want to learn about family values, don't listen to a politician bloviate; marry a latino or latina.)

E-Mail This Article Published on Wednesday, August 1, 2001 in the New York Times Bush's Latin America Nominations Reopen Wounds by Christopher Marquis The officials, who worked together in the State Department during the bitter policy fights over Central America in the 1980's, included Elliott Abrams, a former assistant secretary; Otto J. Reich, the former director of the office of public diplomacy; and Roger Noriega, who was an aide in the Latin affairs bureau. During the Reagan era the three men were among a handful who personified the fight on the homefront, when Republicans accused Democrats of being soft on Communism and some lawmakers chastised the White House for backing murderous regimes. Another colleague, who was not present that day but who worked with them in the Reagan administration is John D. Negroponte, the former ambassador to Honduras. He has been named by Mr. Bush as ambassador to the United Nations. While they may have been amused, Mr. Bush's decision to hire several former Reagan era officials has inflamed critics of their actions during one of the most divisive periods of American policy toward Central America. The return of these men, they say, threatens to spawn a new partisanship and to generate a potentially distracting debate for a region saddled with more pressing concerns where the wounds of civil war remain raw. Senate Democrats have said they plan to scrutinize the nominees, and in some cases to delay or even block their confirmations. But as one Republican who is close to the nominating process said, "The Bush people are picking these full-octane people to do Latin America, and they're not intimidated by the fact there is going to be a fracas."

Latino - Hispanic Heritage
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year in the United States from September 15 to October 15.
Easier - One's heritage is the customs and traditions that are handed down from generation to generation through their families. A person with Latino heritage means that they are descendants of a family from Mexico, Central America, or South America. The term Hispanic means people who come from a country where Spanish is spoken. Harder Many Latinos in the U.S. are descendants of Mexican people who lived in the Southwest when it was appropriated as spoils of war or purchased in a series of land sales. In many cases, their ancestors became Americans not by their own choice. Almost all other American Latinos or their ancestors migrated here from Latin America. As a group, Latinos represent a mixture of several ethnic backgrounds, including European, American Indian, and African. Axteca

Introduction From a total of 292 names of Black American artists from our database, we offer a list of 100 notable artists, which includes 20 women. AskART.com™ uses the term Black American because the description defines a group apart from Caucasians, and embraces those whose lineage is either African or Caribbean.  Ranging from the eighteenth century portraitist, Joshua Johnston to the twentieth century narrative painter, Kara Walker, the list illustrates a gradual emancipation in both self-perception and public acceptance. The Pioneers Joshua Johnston (1765-1830), John James Audubon (1785-1851), Otto Reinhold Jacobi (1812-1901), Patrick Reason (1817-1856), William H. Simpson (1818-1872), and Robert Scott Duncanson (1821-1872) represent some of the names of the early trailblazers who were the unusual combination of black, American, and artist. A review of their work suggests that these vanguards did not focus on the issues surrounding their racial acceptance in society; but rather followed personal or business interests. For example, John James Audubon, whose mother was Haitian, devoted his lifetime to the depiction of North American flora and fauna. Robert Scott Duncanson, considered by some art historians as the first black man to earn his living as an artist, was a painter of both Hudson River landscapes and floral still lifes.
