Program The Latin American Studies department is pleased to announce its 2003 summer program in Chile, South America. Chile is the little known secret of South America. Sandwiched between the gorgeous Andes mountains and the blue waters of the Pacific Coast, Chile is really the Switzerland of the Western Hemisphere. In the North, it has the warm beaches of Arica and Iquique and in the South it has the green lakes and the snowcapped mountains of Patagonia. Farther south lays Antarctica. Chile has the highest score in the United Nations Human Development Index for South America. According to the World Bank, Chilebelongs to the group of upper middle income countries, right below the group led by the United States. A stable democracy since 1990, it is characterized by one of the highest literacy rates an health standards in the Americas.

Culture and State in Latin America
Welcome to the website of the Duke-UNC working group on
"Culture and State in Latin America" The working group on "Culture and State in Latin America," active from 1995 to 1998, aimed to encourage and interrogate work on and in Latin America that bridges the divide between the humanities and the social sciences. Within this interdisciplinary focus, we sought to investigate the ways in which Culture and State inter-react and inter-relate both in Latin America and in social, political and cultural theory. The working group was based at the universities of Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill and was sponsored by the Duke-UNC Program in Latin American Studies , which sponsors a number of such interdisciplinary working groups on Latin American Studies This working group has now disbanded. We have, however, put together a special section in the Journal of Latin American Cultural Studies 8.1 (June 1999) on "Culture and State in Latin America." What follows is the introduction from that section: After Hegemony: Culture and State in Latin America JON BEASLEY-MURRAY AND ALBERTO MOREIRAS 'Consent, though still a political football, and rightly so, insofar as acts of power so often operate in the utter absence of the consent of the victim, is of limited use theoretically. The function of most forms of totalitarianism, remember, has been to set up a system in which familiarity breeds consent, just as in democracies.' (Redding, 1998, p. 248)

Jump Menu Introduction Developing Global Strategies Crisis Or Change Management Distance And E-Learning INTRODUCTION

Our world is undergoing constant and rapid change unprecedented in history and the world of business is no exception. At the same time, the world just keeps getting smaller. A political shake-up or an economic crisis in one part of the world can have an instant and lasting effect on another far, far away. Business people know this and recognize that they must keep abreast of all that’s going on. They must also have the knowledge and the managerial tools to successfully deal with this constant, and sometimes revolutionary, change.
Business educators, many of whom also hold senior managerial posts in companies or maintain extremely close ties to the boardroom, are aware of this need and continuously overhaul their MBA curricula to better meet the needs and expectations of their students. In some cases, this involves just updating or refining the course material. But in other cases, entire new courses are designed. In this edition of the Newsweek International MBA Showcase journalist B.H. Jones tracks the latest trends in business education. DEVELOPING GLOBAL STRATEGIES
As the world constricts, there are unique challenges for managers in handling the opportunities and pitfalls of globalization. But how to initiate and successfully apply a global strategy is a challenge in itself as new markets open up, others undergo radical change and new trade alliances and rules complicate the picture even further.

http://www.coldex.info/projectplan/project2.html
The scientific and engineering approaches used to discover and explore these phenomena will consider the following aspects: Generation and provision of source data Here, a small number of remote sites will be established which generate data. Among these will be an observatory with a high quality telescope and a seismic measurement station in Chile. Technological challenges lie in the ease of use in accessing these data and in communicating the learners' requests and specifications to the remote sites. The stress is put on re-usable components and protocols which are not only tailored to the specific case. Construction of realities The "construction of realities" includes the setting of (real) experiments, the provision of 3D virtual scenarios, artefacts that support other types of perceptual experience (e.g. tactile experience). An important point here is the use of "mixed reality" technologies which allow for a smooth transition between the physical and the digital worlds. The notion of concrete modelling and design refers to the use of concrete representations to model and simulate the phenomena to be studied. These range from 3D models which include sound and tactile I/O to physical models with IT components (e.g. Lego Mindstorms). Here, we do not expect to invent new genuine technologies but we want to adopt existing state-of-art techniques to educational needs.

CULTURAL INDUSTRIES IN THE LATIN AMERICAN ECONOMY:
CURRENT STATUS AND OUTLOOK IN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBALIZATION GENERAL CRITERIA AND PROPOSALS

The regional and subregional dimensions take on a crucial character for providing sustenance and viability to national cultural industries. We must try to incorporate these fully, through concerted strategies and policies at the regional level, into regimes and procedures for economic coordination and integration (e.g., free circulation for books, motion picture and audiovisual regimes, financing, etc.). It must be very clear that, by promoting the regional dimension, we are strengthening national positions.
The processes of regional economic integration and cooperation (while they have distinct characteristics) organized around the principal of "open regionalism" (such as in Asia Pacific and Latin America) are giving rise to new bilateral links within regions (e.g. Japan-Singapore, Japan-South Korea) and between regions (e.g. Chile-South Korea, Chile-Singapore).
These new processes ( particularly when they link a developed country with a developing one) offer a strategic space for cooperation in the field of cultural industries and related sectors. Similar possibilities can emerge from progress in establishing cooperative links among different integration schemes (e.g. MERCOSUR-EU negotiations). Moreover, some of these bilateral accords (e.g. Japan-Singapore) include new provisions and criteria in critical technological areas (e.g. information technologies).
