Notes for the Novice Selector Rebecca Martin
Within the U.S. academic library world, a Spanish-speaking clientele is increasing and requesting that primary materials in Spanish be in the collection. Many of these materials come from Latin America and the Caribbean. Their selection and acquisition can be a complex task, especially for librarians responsible for collecting in this area who are not necessarily specialists. Literary works from the 20th century pose special problems of identification and the timely acquisition of recent titles. This paper, which is directed at the novice selector in this area, suggests a strategy and tools for collecting these literary titles. Population projections for the United States give a "highest series" figure of 25.7 percent to population by Hispanic origin for the year 2050. While the word "Hispanic" is not adequate to describe any group of people, it is the terminology used by the U.S. Census Bureau, and does imply a knowledge of Spanish that is shared by many of its constituents. By the same token, a Spanish-speaking clientele will increase greatly within the U.S. academic library world in the next few decades and will make new demands upon material and human resources. For example, states such as California and Florida are expected to have significant increases in college-eligible Hispanic students. Even states with moderate growth of Hispanic populations, such as Illinois, will see important increases. By 2020, 14.1 percent of the Illinois population is projected to be of Hispanic origin.

Archive Review: Literature and Arts of the Americas Review: Literature and Arts of the Americas is a forum for contemporary Latin American, Caribbean and Canadian literature and arts. Review showcases countless writers and artists, and features critical reviews of new books by and about Latin American, Caribbean and Canadian writers in English translation. Subscribe Now Review has undergone various transformations, in response to cultural and economic currents over the last 36 years. Founded in 1968 as a compilation of previously published reviews of titles by Latin American authors, in the 1970s it turned to publishing special-focus issues on individual Latin American writers, including Borges, Neruda, and Paz. In the 1980s, Review was reconfigured as a high-design publication with substantial coverage of the visual and performing arts, broadening its scope to attract a more general readership. This trend continued into the 1990s when the magazine began publishing more literature and arts from the non-Spanish-speaking Caribbean. And in 2003, the magazine's title was changed from Review: Latin American Literature and Arts to its current one, acknowledging the true mandate of both the magazine and the Americas Society.

Prior to 1945, Mexican and Latin American poetry, drama, and music were acquired regularly by the Harris Collection. At that time, Latin American and Mexican acquisitions were effectively curtailed, although some titles were sporadically added. In 1975, formal acquisitions by purchase for Latin American and Mexican materials for the Harris Collection ceased. Some small additions by gift continue to be made.
However, Chicana/o and Puerto Rican poetry, drama, and music are still actively collected. Since many authors may move between regions and cultures, acquisitions decisions are based primarily on an evaluation of the writer's identification, rather than legal citizenship or residence. The existence of publishers that specifically concentrate in this material, such as Arte Publico and Bilingual Review Press helps in the identification of authors to be included in the Collection.

The third edition of this sourcebook, it is also the most recent guide to the field. In addition to annotated lists of sources, the editor offers information on the research process and style guides. The section on research would be most useful to someone who is unfamiliar with that process. The literary sections are organized chronologically and divided between Spain and Spanish America, with the bulk of the sources on Spain. Unique to this source is a section on Hispanic literature in the United States and Cuba. The linguistics chapter treats Spanish as a whole. There is an author index. Latin American Studies The Latin American Studies Minor is an Area Studies program designed to foster an appreciation and knowledge of Latin America. With an area two-and-one-half times larger than the United States and a population nearly twice that of the United States, Latin America is a region of great significance. Its historical development has been influenced by indigenous cultures, European colonialism, and the tension between state sovereignty and foreign influence. While this development has produced the diverse cultures of Latin America, it also contributes to a shared identity. The Latin American Studies Minor promotes the study of Latin America as a significant world region of intrinsic interest - its cultures, history, literature, and politics. The program also offers students the opportunity to examine Latin America’s relationship with the United States. Latin America is one of the United States’ most vigorous export markets, and the expansion of regional trade agreements illustrates the increasing interconnectedness of the Americas. The Minor offers students the opportunity to study trade and other aspects of U.S.-Latin American relations such as economic aid, immigration, and the environment.
Program Objectives:
  • to generate student interest in Latin America.

Latin American fiction achieved a turning point in its representation of sexual women sometime in the 1960s. Diane E. Marting offers a richly detailed analysis of this development.
Her central idea is that in Latin American narrative women's desires were portrayed as dangerous throughout the 20th century, despite the heroic character of the "newly sexed woman" of the sixties. She argues that woman's sexuality in fiction was transformed because it symbolized the many other changes occurring in women's lives regarding their families, workplaces, societies, and nations. Female sexual desire offered an ever present threat to male privilege.
Marting scrutinizes novels by three of the most famous and most popular novelists of the period, Guatemalan Miguel Angel Asturias, Brazilian Clarice Lispector, and Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa. She argues that their novels from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s represent the beginning, middle, and end, respectively, of what has come to be seen as an indulgent, radical period that produced world-acclaimed sexual fiction of world stature. Marting's book surveys the topic of women's sexuality in the work of both men and women writers and engages two current controversies: feminist and moral issues related to the female body, and the nature of literary history. It will stand as an important addition to the fields of Latin American studies and women's studies.
