    By Stephen Sadow
A subset of the field of Jewish studies, Latin American Jewish studies investigates the history, sociology, demographics, and cultural aspects of Jewish communities and individuals from Latin America and the Caribbean. What do you do when you are working with a literature that is obscure outside of its home culture? What do you do when members of one culture know little of another culture, and vice versa? Responding to these questions, I decided upon an approach that would take me far beyond traditional literary criticism. Through a series of "voyages of discovery" to Jewish communities in Latin America, a growing number of correspondences with writers, literary critics, psychologists, even mystics, and an enormous amount of reading, I immersed myself in the Jewish literature and culture of Latin America. These writers wrote of the strains of being in the minority, of balancing Jewish and Hispanic culture, of Jewish tradition, of optimism for the future, of Zionism, and of the Holocaust. It became my intention to enter this literary culture as a step towards truly understanding its writings. I wanted to see the world as a Jewish Latin American writer saw it. More importantly, it was my goal to become a transmitter of culture from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish.

    Latin American Literature
page: Any attempt to discuss a lesbian and gay heritage for Latin America must inevitably confront the problem of the impact of dominant cultures, such as those of major world centers (usually European or North American) and recognized establishment groups (typically white, middle-class, and male), on a cluster of societies that might at one time have been characterized as Third World or dependent and perhaps now could profitably be examined from the perspective of marginality. Both the medico-criminal concept of homosexuality (homosexuality defined as either an illness or a crime or as both) and the agenda whereby homosexuality is affirmed as a legitimate sexual identity (today often called queer theory, as a term to cover both gay and lesbian sensibilities) are dominant-society ideas that have only an imperfect and even a distorting applicability to Latin America. New York: Colombia University Press by Alexander Coleman At Harvard in the late fifties, I took a course entitled "Masterpieces of Spanish American Literature." With some honorable, even sensational exceptions, there weren't many masterpieces on the reading list, though I was moved by the passion and determination of the teacher, the late and unforgettable Edward Glaser. At graduate school (Columbia), the same thing. Many weak novels were acclaimed as masterpieces from Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, and so on. I thought it odd that in an age of Proust, Joyce, and Mann, students of Spanish American literature would be handed works that could best be described as examples of literary regionalism, sometimes with a glossary at the end so that the particular national character inherent in the work would be revealed by means of words unique to the region. But it was not just the vocabulary that was irritating: it was the moving force that could at times be felt behind the texts themselves - Zolaesque documentation, noble populism, the idea of literature as a weapon. with which to pummel the Wall Street jackals. So while my classmates in Comp. Lit were delving into Gide, Proust, Joyce Mann, Kafka, and the then reigning John Hawkes, we dutiful majors in Span. Am. Lit. were trying to cope with Mariano Axuela's
