01 John de Piano Carpini c. 1180-1252. Italian
Illustrated: Carpini and Mongols crossing the Russian steppe.
Sent as the Pope's ambassador to the Mongols, Carpini was the first European to describe the vast steppe country of Central Asia. More than 60 years old when he started out on Easter Day 1245, this Franciscan friar withstood the bitter cold of the Siberian winter as he travelled to the court of the Great Khan (Emperor) in Mongolia. On his return he wrote A History of the Tartars, describing their customs, such as drinking mare's milk, and how they had become the finest cavalry of their day 02 Marco Polo 1254-1324. Venetian.
Illustrated: Marco Polo presented at court to Kublai Khan.
17 years old when he began his travels with his uncle and father, Marco Polo crossed the Persian desert, climbed the Pamirs, and finally reached the court of the great Khan, Kublai, near Peking. Travelling about China he observed the use of paper money, coal, and the huge Chinese cities. 24 years later when he returned to Venice, few people believed his descriptions. But asked on his deathbed to recant, Marco answered "I have not told half of what I saw". 03 Leif Ericsson, tenth century A.D. Norseman.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
Compiled by
Philip Phillips and Jeffrey P. Brain
Updated and revised by
Tristram R. Kidder
The original Lower Mississippi Survey (LMS) bibliography was compiled by Jeffrey P. Brain and Philip Phillips (Brain and Phillips 1979) for the Conference on Lower Mississippi Valley archaeology, held at Avery Island, Louisiana, in 1978. In its original format the bibliography was comprised of two parts: individual 3 x 5 file cards arranged alphabetically, and an author index, classified in general topical headings, and subdivided regionally. As noted in the Preface to the first bibliography, The emphasis... is upon archaeological and historical source material for the Lower Mississippi Valley, broadly considered substantively and geographically. Pertinent references to the natural environment have been included, with special attention to paleoecology, historical geology, and descriptive geography. Generally omitted are studies of modern climate, flora/fauna, soil surveys, and technical studies, such as MRC (flood control, levee construction) and oil company (prospecting, substructural geology) reports. Also not included are radio-carbon (sic) dates... general theoretical studies, or obituaries, although the bibliographies of the latter have been incorporated. Other sources that contributed to this compilation were the various bibliographies of the LMS, the Tozzer Library [Harvard University] author and subject catalogue files, the bibliographies of major archaeological reports, and the contributions of individual participants in the conference. Existing state archaeological bibliographies (e.g., Davis and Scholtz, Thorne and Lewis, Newman and Simmons) were also drawn upon

La Salle, Robert Cavelier, sieur de [r O u ly A u Pronunciation Key La Salle, Robert Cavelier, sieur de , French explorer in North America, one of the most celebrated explorers and builders of New France. He entered a Jesuit novitiate as a boy but later left the religious life. In 1666 he went to Canada, where he developed a seigniory at Lachine. In 1673 the governor of New France, Frontenac, made him commandant of Fort Frontenac (see Kingston , Ont., Canada). After a visit to France, where he was granted a patent of nobility, La Salle began (1675) to develop the trade at the post. In 1677 he was in France again and obtained a patent to build forts, explore, and trade. When he returned, he brought with him Henri de Tonti , who was his lieutenant in later enterprises. In 1679 a blockhouse was built at the outlet of the Niagara River, and in August they set out across the Great Lakes in the Griffon, which Tonti had built. That first sailing vessel on the lakes took the adventuring traders to Green Bay; the party then went by land. The Griffon was lost a little later, probably in a storm. La Salle went along Lake Michigan, erected Fort Miami on the site of present St. Joseph, Mich., then continued to the Illinois River. On that stream Fort Creve Coeur was built.

A WebQuest for 4th grade Social Studies Jessica Gossett GJ457@aol.com Introduction Task Process ... Credits Introduction Have you ever wished to explore new lands and go on adventurous journeys? Well today is your chance. It is your turn to become an explorer. You will be asked to create items and research information based on a certain explorer. It is your duty to recount the lives of these great explorers and bring your classmates back to a time of discovery and new opportunities. Back to top of page Task In crews each student will research an explorer that has been assigned to them. The students will become experts on their explorer by creating journals of what life was like for the explorers and their crew. Each crew will create maps and journals to present to the class to better their understanding of what their explorer did for their country. Back to top of page Process Once you have been assigned to a crew and an explorer, you will begin to collect information from various websites that have been provided to you. You and your crew will complete three different tasks. After you have completed the first task you can then move onto the second, and so forth. Task #1 Your crew must re-create a map of your explorers journeys. Using the websites provided you may either print a copy of the map and trace it onto a paper or you may recreate your own by hand, this is up to your crew. The map must include which exploration is shown and the exact route that the explorer took. Try to make this map as realistic as possible (remember the time period you are dealing with). This map will be presented to the class as well as used, in smaller form, for task #2.
