Presentation of Laos
The current flag was adopted in 1975 and was the flag of the Pathet Lao. It replaced the flag used since 1952. The flag of Laos is one of the few communist-style flags not featuring a star. The colors of the flag represent: Red: the blood shed in the fight for freedom;
Blue: wealth;
White: represents the full moon over the Mekong River as well as unity under the communist government. The blue in Laotian flag meaning the Mekong River. The white circle is the symbol os reunification of two laotians regions divised by the river (Robert Lacontre in Le Figaro 6.1.78)
11 September 1999 Smith says that the white disk represents the promise of a bright new future for the country. Znamierowski says that white represents the unity of the multiethnical [Laotian] society under Communist rule.

152. Thao Hung Epic - Dok Champa Jan-Mar 1994
Summary of the plot, and prefaces to various editions of the work.
http://www.mekongexpress.com/laos/articles/dc_0394_thaohung.htm
Thao Hung Epic by Douang Deuane Bounyavong and Maha Sila Viravong Author's Preface to the 1991 Edition The Thao Hung Epic is one of the masterpieces of Lao literature. There exist various versions, but the most complete and perfectly composed account is the one represented by 300 bundles of palm-leaf inscriptions found by Maha Sila Viravong in the Thai National Library in Bangkok in 1941. Maha Sila had transliterated this version into modern Lao language in 1942, and it was only in 1988 that the Ministry of Culture published the masterpiece in one volume. According to scholarly studies, the Thao Hung Epic was written sometime between the mid-14th to mid-16th centuries by a royal poet of the Lane Xang Dynasty. It was composed with three perfect patterns of Lao verses of 20,000 lines. The subject of this masterpiece is the greatness of a courageous king whose influence was hard upon the Mekong banks and Mekong basins during the period of 10th through 12th centuries. This epic reflected the society of that dynasty in such various aspects as beliefs, traditions and ritualssuch as spirit cults, wedding ceremonies, funerals and costumes, etc.which one can trace in many regions of Laos to this very day. Many centuries have passed, but one could say that the ways of life, tradition and ritual ceremonies about weddings and birth, death and funerals, largely remain as before. Some have been modified by religion, modernization and communication. Yet people still embrace many of the old customs, living productive lives as tillers of the soil as well as hunting, fishing and producing household utensils for themselves. Through history they have participated in wars, sons and husbands often abandoning families for battlefields.

Laos frees Western journalists
The three men's sentences prompted an international outcry. Story Tools (CNN) Laos has released two European journalists and an American citizen who had been sentenced to 15 years in jail last month. The U.S. Embassy confirmed to CNN that the three were to be flown to Bangkok, Thailand from the Lao capital Vientiane at 4:20 p.m. (0920 GMT) Wednesday. The men were sentenced to jail on June 30 for involvement in the death of a village security guard. But the men Belgian freelance reporter Thierry Falise, French cameraman and photographer Vinecent Reynaud, along with Naw Karl Mua, an American pastor of Lao origin said they were reporting on the rebellion of the Hmong ethnic hill tribe minority. International outrage followed the sentencing of the men for obstructing officers, possessing weapons and explosives, possessing drugs and being involved in the death. Rights groups condemned the trial as unfair and called on Western governments to pressure Laos into releasing the men.

158. Laos - Eating The Laotian Way
Brief description of the food culture, with recipe for Laap (Good Fortune), a beef dish.
http://www.settlement.org/cp/english/laos/eating.html
E ATING THE L AOTIAN W AY M ost Laotians eat rice three times a day. The most common type is "sticky rice," which can be rolled into a ball with the fingers and dipped into a sauce. Occasionally, people eat noodles rather than rice. Padek or fermented fish paste is an ingredient in many Laotian dishes. Hot chilis are also added to foods. The amount of chili used varies with the different Laotian ethnic groups. Other common seasonings are lime juice, lemon grass and coriander leaves. A typical Laotian meal consists of rice, fish, vegetables and hot peppers. The menu for festive occasions may also include eggs, poultry, beef or game. Vegetables include corn, cassava, white radish, sweet potatoes, and cucumbers. Papaya is the most popular fruit. Bananas, oranges, berries and groundnuts (peanuts) are also eaten frequently. A common Lao dish is called laap . It is a mixture of meat or fish and lime juice, garlic, rice, green onions, mint and chilis. Laotians also enjoy salads made with shredded green papaya, seasoned with padek and chilis.
