A BRIEF HISTORY OF LAOS The early inhabitants of Southeast Asia date back as far as 8,000 BC, and were simple hunter-gatherers. However, a slow southwestwardly migration of Austronesian (Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian) and Austro-Asiatic (Mon, Khmer, Vietnamese) speaking settlers, from China, gradually pushed out the native Australo-Melanesian speaking inhabitants. These new settlers brought with them Chinese agricultural practices based on intensive rice production, so that by about 4,000 BC rice was being cultivated throughout the region, and from about 3,000 BC metalworking started. By the 8 th century AD, a gradually migration of Austro-Thai peoples from Southern China and Vietnam brought with it the emergence of numerous agricultural based, feudal kingdoms – mostly centred around river valleys of northern Laos. These small chiefdoms were loosely based on the Thai system

Flag of Lao People's Democratic Republic
Royal Laos National Flag until 1975 Background:
Laos is the least developed asian landlocked country, surrounded by China in the north, Burma (Myanmar) to the north-west, Thailand in the south-west, Cambodia (Kampuchia) in the south-east, and Vietnam to the east.
Most Laotians are subsistence farmers, and rice is the principal crop. Forestry is economically important, but mining and manufacturing are limited. Barter is the prevalent method of exchange in rural commerce. The unit of currency in Laos is the new kip (921.13 new kips equal U.S.$1; 1996). After 600 years of being a monachy, at the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, Laos has been ruled by a one-party Communist Government. Although Laos is opening its door to the West, under the 1991 constitution, Laos continues to be a one-party centralised system as specified in the constitution in Article 3: "The rights of the multi-ethnic people to be the masters of the country are exercised and ensured through the functioning of the political system with the Lao People's Revolutionary Party as its leading nucleus".

http://www.country-studies.com/laos/history.html
History
HISTORICAL RESEARCH SHOWS that the rudimentary structures of a multiethnic state existed before the founding of the Kingdom of Lan Xang in the thirteenth century. These prethirteenth-century structures consisted of small confederative communities in river valleys and among the mountain peoples, who found security away from the well-traveled rivers and overland tracks where the institutions and customs of the Laotian people were gradually forged in contact with other peoples of the region. During these centuries, the stirring of migrations as well as religious conflict and syncretism went on more or less continuously. Laos's shortlived vassalage to foreign empires such as the Cham, Khmer, and Sukhothai did nothing to discourage this process of cultural identification and, in fact, favored its shaping. In the thirteenth centuryan historically important watershed- -the rulers of Louangphrabang (Luang Prabang) constituted a large indigenous kingdom with a hierarchical administration. Even then, migratory and religious crosscurrents never really ceased. The durability of the kingdom itself is attested to by the fact that it lasted within its original borders for almost four centuries. Today, the Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR, or Laos) covers only a small portion of the territory of that former kingdom. However, Laos's incorporation into French Indochina beginning in 1893 brought with it Vietnamese immigration, which was officially encouraged by the French to staff the middle levels of the civil services and militia. During the few months in 1945 when France's power was momentarily eclipsed, the consequences of this Vietnamese presence nearly proved fatal for the fledgling Lao Issara (Free Laos) government. The issue of Vietnamese dominance over Indochina remained alive into the postindependence period with the armed rebellion of the Pathet Lao (Lao Nation), who proclaimed themselves part of an Indochina-wide revolutionary movement. The Royal Lao Government grappled with this problem for ten years but never quite succeeded in integrating the Pathet Lao rebels peacefully into the national fabric.

Over the next two centuries the Thais sphere of influence steadily grew until Laos became little more than a satellite state. In a rebellion by King Anou in 1827 Vientiane was liberated from the Thais. Towards the end of the 19th century the Thais were forced to give up large parts of their territory, including Laos and Cambodia to France. Lan Xang was renamed Laos and became part of French Indochina.
In 1945 the Japanese briefly took control of Laos and when they left later that same year a power vacuum was created. The Lao Issara, or Free Laos movement, led by Prince Phetsareth quickly moved into this breach to declare independence from France. Unfortunately for the Prince, King Sisavang Vong sided with the French and the Prince was forced into exile in Thailand. This resulted in the dissolution of the Lao Issara and the crowning of King Sisavang Vong as King of all Laos in 1946. In the wake of Lao Issara, the Pathet Lao was formed in the northeast of the country. The Pathet Lao received support from the Viet Minh of communist northern Vietnam and continued the struggle for independence. Although France granted Laos sovereignty in 1953, the Pathet Lao was not convinced that government with a constitutional monarch was the answer.

Laos traces its formal history (also see Early History of Laos ) to the establishment of the Kingdom of Lan Xang (literally, "million elephants") by King Fa Ngum in 1353. Under his rule, the wealthy and mighty kingdom covered the northeast region of present-day Thailand ( Isan ), all of Laos and present-day Stung Treng province of Cambodia . Following its colonization of Vietnam France supplanted Siam and began to integrate all of Laos into the French empire. The Franco-Siamese treaty of 1907 defined the present Lao boundary with Thailand. During World War II , the Japanese occupied French Indochina , including Laos. King

    (Laos People's Democratic Republic)
[Sathalanalat Paxathipatai Paxaxon Lao] The Country Geography:
Laos is a landlocked nation occupying a central strip of the Indochinese Peninsula in Southeast Asia. The country is surrounded by Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, Thailand to the west, Myanamar to the northwest and China to the north. Laos is a mountainous country, widely covered by largely untouched tropical rain forrest. Less than 5% of the land is suitable for subsistence agriculture, even though agriculture provides around 80% of employment. Consequently Laos is the poorest country in Indo-China. In the southwest the Mekong river defines the border with Thailand, and along it's banks is the main area of low-lying land in the country. In the north is a deeply pitted plateau which rises to more than 2000 m (6,560 ft) above sea level. Located within this region is the Plain of Jars, which has been at the centre of much armed conflict. The south eastern border with Vietnam is formed by the Annam mountains, which rise to 2500 m (8202 ft). The colonial French authorities introduced a basic network of roads, but there is not a single railway line in the country. Hence, the rivers still provide a key means of transport. The principle legal source of foreign exchange is the Nam Ngum hydroelectric plant, which exports a large proportion of its electricity to Thailand. At the same time, Laos it the world's third largest opium producer, despite government efforts to combat illegal drug production.
