The mighty Mekong in the west and the Annamite Mountains in the east offer natural borders to Thailand and Vietnam respectively, while Laos also shares borders with China in the north, Myanmar in the northwest and Cambodia in the south. With over half of this landlocked country's 236,800sq. km densely forested, and 70% of it mountainous, it is hardly surprising that a profusion of rare flora and over 1,200 species of wildlife finds a home beneath its tropical canopy. The country's highest peak, at 2,820m, can be found in the mountainous ranges of northeastern Laos, in the province Xiang Khouang, However, nearly equally as impressive are the mountains at the southern end of the Annamite range which reach heights of 2,600m. The Khammouanne and Bolaven plateaus dominate the central region of the Annamites. Almost all of the rivers and streams in Laos eventually end up feeding into the Mekong through one of its 15 tributaries, making a total of 2,400km of waterways and feeding the Mekong with more than half of its overall water flow. Though averaging rainfalls of between 1360mm, in Luang Prabang, to 3700mm on the Boloven Plateau during the June to October monsoon season, Laos regularly suffers from water shortages in the low-lying Mekong Delta plains. This can adversely effect the rice crops that account for almost 80% of the country's agricultural land.

This film introduces you to the complexity of irrigated rice agriculture in Southeast Asia by focusing on traditional agriculture and the ritual regulation of water delivery and planting cycles on the island of Bali in Indonesia. It also discusses the problems that arose when development agencies tried to 'modernize' this system. The purpose of this lecture is to introduce students to the main geographical features of Southeast Asia. The list below presents 1990 census information and a few characteristics of each country. It has common borders with China (505km), Cambodia (435km), and Vietnam (2,069km). Lao PDR is 236,800 square km, the major part being mountainous and forested. The country is divided into three geographical areas: the Northern, the Central, and the Southern areas. The Mekong river flows through 1,865 km of Lao PDR territory and forms the major portion of the border with Thailand (1,835 km). 60% of the water entering this major river system originates in Lao PDR. The three highest "phu" ( mountains ) are all located in Xieng Khuang province. The highest is Phu Bia (2,820 km), then Phu Xao (2,690 km), and Phu Xamxum with 2,620 m. Population Lao PDR has a population of 4,474,000 inhabitants (projected 1993) comprising over 47 different ethnic groups, such as Hmong, Khmer, Yao, A'kha, Ikoh, Lu etc. Each tribe has its own distinctive customs, dialects and costumes.

Even in Laos’s capital, Vietenne, the pace of life is as unhurried as the Mekong River.. The cares of the modern world seem far away as you spend your days browsing for hand-woven cloth in the Morning market – soaking in a traditional herbal sauna run by monks,, or relaxing in the grounds of one of the city’s many pagodas.
In Luang Prabang, Laos’s former imperial capital and monastic center, the sense that you’ve travelled back in time is more palpable still. As you wander past French colonial villas, royal pavilions and golden-roofed temples, it’s easy to imagine that you’ve been transported to the nineteenth century! Travelwizard.com’s Virtuoso travel agents can have you traversing the staircase leading up to Phu Si, the temple-studded hillside that dominates Luang Prabang – set in a grove of frangipani trees. The fallen blossoms carpeting your path as if sprinkled there in welcome. Once home to the royal court, Luang Probang is also Laos’ religious capital with dozens of pagodas all within easy walking distance. Laos is also the home to the Plain of Jars – one of the great mysteries of history. Legend has it that the more than three hundred several ton jars were left by the 6th century Chinese King Khun Jeuam as vessals for rice and wine to celebrate his army’s conquest of Chao Angka. Other theories are they were used for burials… but no one knows for sure. All historians know is somehow they have survived numerous wars, floods and the ravages of time! The United Nations recently named the Plain of Jars as a World Heritage Sight.

Laos' flag was adopted on December 2, 1975, when the communist Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR) toppled the King and took over the government. This red, white, and blue flag has three horizontal stripes; a red stripe on the top, a double-width blue stripe in the middle, and a red stripe on the bottom. A large, white circle is in the center of the blue stripe. The proportions of the flag are 2:3 (height to width). The red in the flag symbolizes blood that was lost in the fight for freedom, the blue represents wealth and the Mekong River, and the white circle symbolizes the full moon over the Mekong River as well as unity of the country under the communist government.
