BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... PEOPLE Color LAOS Laos is located Southeastern Asia, northeast of Thailand, west of Vietnam. The topography of Laos is largely mountainous, with elevations above 500 meters typically characterized by steep terrain, narrow river valleys, and low agricultural potential. This mountainous landscape extends across most of the north of the country, except for the plain of Vientiane and the Plain of Jars in Xiangkhoang Province. The southern "panhandle" of the country contains large level areas in Savannakhét and Champasak provinces that are well suited for extensive paddy rice cultivation and livestock raising. Much of Khammouan Province and the eastern part of all the southern provinces are mountainous. Together, the alluvial plains and terraces of the Mekong and its tributaries cover only about 20 percent of the land area.

Laos - Geography Laos is completely landlocked, which has had an indelible effect on its history. The Annamite chain of mountains runs down the eastern side as a natural boundary with Vietnam, while the Mekong River forms much of the western frontier with Thailand and Cambodia. Most Lao cultivate the lowland plains adjoining the Mekong, which is also an invaluable artery for trade and transport.
The two high plateaux, the Bolovens and the Plain of Jars, are grassy and planted with local coffee and soft fruit. Laos is still forested for much of its area, although the uplands of the north have been slashed by tribal agriculture, leaving the hill tops looking like freshly shaved scalps as you fly over. Logging is a sensitive issue; it is officially illegal, but this does not prevent a brisk timber trade over the river to Thailand.
    Climate
The rainy season runs from May to October, with heat building up from March onwards. November to March is generally cooler and dry with clear skies. In fact, it can be downright chilly from Luang Prabang northwards, and the cold clammy mornings in the mountains of the north are reminiscent of a European winter.

      Geography
[edit this] Laos covers and area of 236.800 sq. km and is about as big as Ecuador or Great Britain. The country consists of mountains and plateaux. The Mekong river flows along the western and southern borders of the country providing a natural boundary to Myanmar and Thailand. On its banks nestle most of Laos` important cities, the capital of Vientiane and the former Royal Capital, Luang Prabang. Rugged mountains cover more than 75% of the country. The vegetation is diverse and rich: tropical and sub-tropical species, from mango and palms to the mountain hardwoods. About half the country is still covered with primary forests
