Welcome to Laos, one of the most fascinating countries in the world. The People's Democratic Republic of Laos, also known as Lao PDR is situated in the heart of French Indochina, landlocked between Thailand, Burma (Myanmar), China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Laos is one of the poorest and least visited countries in the world. The Lao people are known for their gentle polite nature and for their charming hospitality. The capital Vientiane, is one of Asia's biggest villages, sitting on the banks of the Mekong river. To the north, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the old Royal city of Luang Prabang is home to dozens of temples and a way of life that has changed little over the years. In the south the Angkor era temple of Wat Phu is one of the jewels of the Mekong. This website is the Internet's biggest source of travel information for one of the world's most fascinating countries.

A Short History of Laos: The Land in Between (A Short History of Asia series) > Customer Review #1: Comprehensive, insightful, culturally-sensitive

For a newcomer to Laos, Dr. Evanss volume would seem an excellent introduction to its history, politics and culture. For someone like myself, who had his own intense introduction to Laos in the late 60s and looks forward to a return, the book is an insightful refresher and update. It has helped me put my own experience in context and rethink the Laos I once thought I knew. This short history is thoughtful, well-written, and largely devoid of moral judgments. The subtitle "The Land in Between" sums up an unfortunate reality for much of its history Laos has been caught between more powerful neighbors and sometimes their even more powerful patrons. But Evans does not stop with such a facile explanation of the Laos that has emerged. I particularly appreciate his continuing emphasis on the deep and enduring cultural roots of the peoples who inhabit Laos and the interplay among them.

There is considerable scope for joint ventures and investment by Indian private sector in areas like agro industry, food processing, plantations (including rubber, tea and coffee), sugar, cement and leather processing. Vast potential exists in the mining and power sector as well in the services sector, particularly for consultancy in infrastructure projects. Laos has imported water pumps worth US$ 19.8 million from India. The possibility of a joint venture between Kirloskars and a Lao concern for manufacture, servicing and assembly of pumps using the US$ 2 million long term soft loan from India is being explored. There are possibilities of exporting various consumer products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, engineering goods etc. from India to Laos. The first meeting of India-Laos Joint Commission was held in New Delhi in July 1997 and the next one is likely to be held in Vientiane in late 1998
