Laos History and Culture
History The country has long been occupied by migrating Thais (including Shans, Siamese and Lao) and slash-and-burn Hmong/Mien hill tribes. The first Lao principalities were consolidated in the 13th century following the invasion of south-west China by Kublai Khan's Mongol hordes. In the mid-14th century, a Khmer-sponsored warlord, Fa Ngum, combined a number of scattered principalities around Luang Prabang to form his own kingdom, Lan Xang ('a million elephants').

Culture Laos Cuisine People of Laos Temple in Laos Laos Style ... Nature in Laos Culture Lao people boast a plethora of distinctive monuments and architectural styles. One of the most notable structures is That luang, the Great Sacred Stupa, in Vientiane. Its dome like Stupa and four-cornered superstructure is the model for similar monuments throughout Laos. Stupas serve to commemorate the life of the Buddha and many Stupas are said to house sacred relics (parts of Buddha's body). Generally, Hinayana Buddhists cremate the dead body then collected the bone and put in stupa which up in a round the temple.
Deferent styles of architecture are evident in the numerous Buddhist Wats. Three architecture styles can be distinguished, corresponding to the geographical location of the temples and monasteries. Wats built in Vientiane are large rectangular structures constructed of brick and coved with stucco and high-peaked roofs. In Luang Prabang the roofs sweep very low and, unlike in Vientiane, almost reach the ground. These two styles are different from the Wat Xieng Khouang where the temple roofs are not tiered.
Lao religious images and art are also distinctive and set Lao apart from its neighbors. The " Calling for Rain" posture of the Buddha images in Laos, for example, which depicts the Buddha standing with his hands held rigidly at his side, fingers pointing to the ground, cannot be found in other south East Asian Buddhist art traditions.

How to organize the ceremony.

The term "Watsa" means the rain or rainy season. the monks complete the practices of Buddha teachings during the period of three months in the rainy season without spending any nights in other places. On the 1st day of the dark moon of the eleventh month the closing ceremony for Buddhist Lent should be arranges. But, in practice, it is organized in the full moon of the fifteen in the eleventh month, one day before the due date. In the Buddha's teaching, the closing ceremony for Buddhist Lent was not decided, but Pavalana, prior notice ceremony was instead made after three months of Buddhist lent ended. So, in practice the monks made Pavalana on the evening of the full moon of the fifteen in the eleventh month. It is one day before the real closing date.
After the decision is made, the oldest monk sits on his knees, joins his hands and says Pavalana in front the others in Pali language : "To you all the monks, may I notice you in advance and do not in doubt that I made mistakes or sins caused by a breach of the rules of the monastic order (Patimakkha), please warn me, to change my bad behaviour for proper behaviour acting." Then all the monks have to say the same words until its completion. The monks who completed the Buddhist Lent, can gain Anisong 5, merit making.

Alan Davidson 185 pp; 135 x 216 mm; 70 original drawings; paperback This is a reprinting of Alan Davidson's study of the fish cookery of Laos. It has a catalogue of species, as well as a collection of recipes and much information on cooking materials and ingredients. The book has close links with Traditional Recipes of Laos , and many recipes are drawn from that work. It has been out of print for more than two decades and its reappearance has been eagerly awaited indeed, we announced it in 1999. Perhaps we should accord full credit to this year's award to Alan Davidson of the Erasmus Prize as spur to our endeavour. The critical thing to remember about Laos is there is no seaside and that all the fish live in the Mekong river and its tributaries. That great stream runs from China in the north to the Falls of Khong to the south. It forms the border between Laos and Burma (Myanmar), and Laos and Thailand. bears the Davidson hallmark of stylistic felicity. This book was first published by the author in Vientiane, where he was British ambassador, in 1975, and subsequently by Charles E. Tuttle. Alan Davidson was, of course, the founder of Prospect Books itself. Laos is an inland country, the fish are freshwater species. A catalogue of many of those available in Lao markets is followed by some 50 recipes from Laos and its neighbours. Earlier readers may remember it for the description of the giant catfish of the Mekong, but it is valuable too for its description of other strange creatures ('River Dragons: one hears of these..,) and for a cookery that will captivate creator and victim by its fiery delicacy. There are points of contact with the Traditional Recipes of Laos, above, but together they make a wonderful introduction to the country.

When speaking of Lao culture, there is a tendency to mention only the culture of the Laotians of the plains (mainly the western part of Laos) whereas these people make up less than half the overall population. The cultural and religious practices of the minorities can vary considerably, according to the ethnic family or the degree of cultural development. Here we are going to talk about cultural features of the Lao Loum (Laotians of the plains).
    Religion:
Today around 65% of the Laotian population practise Theravada Buddhism, also known as the Little Vehicle Buddhism. This religion was developed in Laos between the 14th and 17th centuries as it gradually took over over animism and Brahmanism. As in neighbouring Thailand and Cambodia, religion has a strong influence on culture and daily life. The monasteries (Wat), which form the centre of collective life, have a social function in addition to their religious role by providing education to children from poor families.
Ancient beliefs, in particular the cult of the phi people, exist side by side with Buddhism without any problem. Many feasts or ceremonies practised by Buddhists are ancient animist practices.
