Lao Culture
Laotian literature is predominantly religious and linked to the Buddhist tradition. There is also a secular literary tradition based on themes of the Hindu epic poems, which have been transmuted into popular language. Laotians have a variety of folk arts, including weaving, basketmaking, wood and ivory carving, and silverwork and goldwork. Professional dance troupes draw upon themes from the Indian epics. Laos has four major ethno-linguistic groups. The Lao-Lum, or valley Lao, speak Laotian Tai and live in the lowlands and cities and along the Mekong River. The Lao-Lum comprise about two-thirds of the country's total population. The Lao-Tai, or tribal Tai, include the Black Tai and Red Tai (so-called in reference to the colour of their women's dress), who live throughout the country, especially at higher elevations. The Lao-Theung (Mon-Khmer) are thought to be descendants of the earliest populations of the region; they live throughout Laos and in neighbouring countries. The Lao-Soung group, including the Hmong (Meo, or Miao) and the Man (Yao), probably migrated from southern China to Laos in the late 18th century. Chinese and Vietnamese minorities generally live in the cities. About three-fifths of the population adheres to Theravada Buddhism. Animism is practiced among the Lao-Theung, and a small percentage of the population is Christian. Mahayana Buddhism and Confucianism are observed by Chinese and Vietnamese minorities. Lao is the official language; English, Vietnamese, and French are spoken by the elite in cities.

Religious
Neat and respectful dress should be worn in all religious shrines. It is not considered polite to visit religious monuments in shorts, miniskirts or hot pants. Though shoes can be worn in temple compounds, they should be removed before entering the chapel of the principal Buddha image. Indeed, all Buddha images are regarded as sacred, regardless of size, age or position, and should all be shown due respect. Buddhist monks are not allowed to touch or be touched by a woman, or accept anything from a woman's hand. Social
The Lao people greet each other with a prayer-like gesture called a nop. A younger person or a person of lower status will nop their elder or better. The western custom of shaking hands has become more common in recent years - though a smile and a slight bow of the head is still considered polite. Backslapping, public displays of affection, shouting, and wild gesticulation are all considered impolite.
The head is considered the highest part of the body, while the feet are considered the lowest, both literally and figuratively. Touching someone's head or pointing at people or things with the feet are, therefore, considered extremely rude. As with entering temples, shoes are removed before entering somebody's home.

Country Info Laos Introduction Laos General Data Laos Maps Laos Culture ... Laos Time and Date Laos Culture Back to Top Laos is a rural country whose relatively low population density has allowed the continuation of a village society reliant on subsistence agriculture. The lack of a national government infrastructure and effective transportation networks has also contributed to the relative independence and autonomy of most villages. Residence in a village thus has been an important aspect of social identity, particularly for lowland Lao ethnic groups. For many upland ethnic groups, clan membership is a more important point of social identification. For all groups, the village community has a kinship nexus, although structures differ. Rice is the staple food for all Laotians, and most families and villages are able to produce enough or nearly enough each year for their own consumption. Laos is ethnically diverse; the population includes more than forty ethnic groups, which are classified within three general families of Lao Sung (upland Lao), Lao Theung (midland Lao), and Lao Loum (lowland Lao). The country is officially a multiethnic nation, with Lao as the official language, but relationships among the different groups have sometimes been characterized by misunderstandings and competition over natural resources. The different ethnic groups have substantially different residential patterns, agricultural practices, forms of village governance, and religious beliefs. Only the national capital of Vientiane and a few other provincial capitals can be considered urban. These small cities are market and administrative centers that attract trading and communications activity, but they have developed very little manufacturing or industrial capacity. Daily and seasonal life in all sectors of the society is affected by the monsoon. Rice production determines periods of heavy and slack work, which are mirrored in school vacations, religious festivals, and government activity.

About 60% of Lao, mainly the lowland Lao and a sprinkling of Thai tribes, are Theravada Buddhists. Every Lao Buddhist male is expected to become a monk for a short period of his life, usually between school and starting a career or getting married. The main non-Buddhist 'religion' is phii worship, a spirit cult which is officially banned. Hmong/Mien tribes practise animism and ancestral worship, and some follow a Christian version of the cargo cult, believing Jesus Christ will arrive in a jeep, dressed in combat fatigues. A small number of Lao - mostly the French-educated elite - are Christians. The official language of Laos is Lao, as spoken and written in Vientiane. As an official language, it has successfully become the lingua franca between all Lao and non-Lao ethnic groups in Laos. There are five main dialects in the country, each of which can be divided into further subdialects. All Lao dialects are closely related to the languages spoken in Thailand, northern Myanmar and pockets of China's Yunnan Province. Traditional culture in Laos has been heavily influenced by various strains of Khmer, Vietnamese and Thai cultures. The lowland Lao share the same ancestry as many Thai tribes, so the similarities between Lao and Thai culture are especially strong. This can be seen in Lao sculpture, classical music, dance-dramas and cuisine. Lao folk music is more indigenous, based around the khaen (a double row of bamboo reeds fitted into a hardwood sound box). Folk music is often accompanied by dancing or bawdy theatre. The focus of most traditional art has been primarily religious and includes wats (temples), stupas and several distinctively Lao representations of Buddha. The Lao remain skilful carvers and weavers, but traditional silversmithing and goldsmithing are declining arts.

Laos: The Country, Its People and Its Culture The Lao People's Democratic Republic or Laos is strategically located at the hub of Indochina-sharing borders with China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Burma-is a landlocked country. The former Buddhist monarchy has undergone periods of political and military upheavals. Laos has been the victim of foreign aggression. Ruled loosely by the French before World War II, Laos was declared independent by its Japanese occupiers prior to their defeat. When the French returned, they reinstated colonial domination. However, French control over Indochina came to a bitter end when they lost Dien Bien Phu to the Viet Minh. In October, 1954, France recognized Laos as fully independent. In 1955 it was admitted to the United Nations. However, the main source of political strife has been the struggle for and against Communism, intensified and complicated by the participation from outsiders. In fact, Laotian coalition government made of neutralist, communist and pro-Western factions was formed in June 1962. But, Prince Souvanna Phouma failed to get contentious factions to cooperate. The country has been plagued by political assassinations, coups after coups until 1973, when another coalition government was formed. After a lengthy period of political instability, the Kingdom of Laos was politically, economically and socially transformed. The Lao People's Revolutionary Party took over the country and changed its name into the Lao People's Democratic Republic in December 1975.

Laos - Culture From 1975 to 1990 Laos was effectively closed to the West. Despite the fact that it is now considered to be one of the poorest countries in the world, there is no evidence of starvation or begging. There is hardly any crime, people greet foreigners with unforced hospitality and have maintained a strong cultural identity despite the political upheavals. Festivals
The Lao word for festival is 'boun', which also means 'merit', and is an important part of life - the Lao will happily celebrate almost anything. There are four major national festivals throughout the year - the exact month varies according to the Buddhist calendar.
The Lao also celebrate Chinese New Year, Labour Day on May 1st , National Day on December 2nd and even Christmas.

Laos History
The fortunes and misfortunes of this beautiful, landlocked country have long been tied to those of its neighbors in Southeast Asia. Through the centuries, separate Lao kingdoms were overrun repeatedly by Siamese and Vietnamese conquerors: Laos did not take its present national boundaries until French rule in 1890s. After independence in 1953, it suffered through two decades of civil war, including invasion by the North Vietnam Army and saturation bombing by the U.S. Air Force, as it was drawn into the larger war based in Vietnam. In 1975, the new People's Democratic Republic deposed King Sisavang Vatthana, ending six centuries of royal rule. Economic decline and isolation following the coup left Laos one of the poorest countries in the world. Facing the starvation of its people, the government realigned the economy in the late 1980s to promote private enterprise and foreign investment. Although inflation is still high, most city dwellers are now much better off than they were previously. Prosperity has been slow to reach the rural areas, but with large amounts of foreign aid and the potential for income from the sale of hydroelectric power, the government is slowly extending services to these areas as well. Remarkably, despite all the hardships caused by foreign powers, most Lao people welcome visitors.

Overview
Food ... Lao People's Democratic Republic: Culture The basis of Laotian culture is religion and tradition. Art, literature, music, and drama draw mainly FROM these sources. Towns along the Mekong are exposed to Western culture through Thai mass media. Theravada Buddhism entered the country in the 14th century. This religion and Hinduism have been major influences on cultural and intellectual life in Laos. The story of the Buddha and Hindu myths are the subjects of the carvings and sculptures found in all religious places. In the south, Khmer influences on the peoples of Laos are strong; in the north, Myanmar and Thai influences are readily apparent. As elsewhere in Southeast Asia, religious symbols, stories, and themes have been modified and localized. The snake, for example, representations of which adorn religious and royal buildings, symbolizes the benevolent spirit of the water and the protector of the king. The Laotians have a variety of folk arts, including weaving, basketmaking, wood and ivory carving, and silverwork and goldwork. There are a number of Laotian musical instruments, of which the khen, a bamboo wind instrument, is most widely known. Music is not written down but is played FROM memory. Dancing is a profession rather than a form of recreation; the professional dance troupes travel throughout the country performing for religious celebrations or on important holidays. Their main themes are drawn FROM the Indian epics. All professional dancers are male, the female roles being performed by young men and boys.

12. Laos Culture
not as wide a range of art in Laos as in Thailand, as the country has been constantlydominated by foreign powers that tended to suppress indigenous culture.
http://www.germantravelnetwork.com/Html/D/Asien/indochina/Laos/culture.htm
People
Laos' ethnically diverse population is usually divided by topographical zones into three groups:
1. The wet rice cultivating, Buddhist Lao Loum of the lowlands, who are politically and numerically dominant, constituting over half of the total population.
2. The Lao Theung who occupy the mountain slopes and make up about a quarter of the population.
3. The Lao Soung, or upland Lao, who live in the high mountains and practise shifting cultivation, and who make up less than a fifth of Laos' total population.
These subdivisions are simplistic and in practice the lines between ethnic groups are increasingly blurred as communication and migration increase across the country.
The largest non-Lao groups in Laos are the Chinese and Vietnamese communities in the main cities.
Religion
The predominant religion is Theravada Buddhism. Animism is common particularly among the mountain tribes. Buddhism and spirit worship coexist easily, even though phi worship is officially banned. The clearest example of this is the Baci ceremony which all Buddhist lowland Lao practise regularly at every major life event such as birth, marriage and death. The ceremony calls all the good spirits together to ward off the evil spirits and to get strength for these important moments in life. Most Christians (primarily Roman Catholic) have left since 1975.

There are some great essays in here that have not been published elsewhere. Original research
Laos: Culture and Society > Customer Review #2: Misguided misconceptions Despite the growing need for flexible overviews of this part of the world, and, taking into account that the editor is an accomplished writer, this volume does not fill the need for even an undergraduate readership (let alone tourists!). Its poorly compiled and suffers from what must have been "old buddies" wanting in. A case in point is Trankells paper. Ive read it through twice and although Ive spent two years of field work in the area (Trankell claims to have spent two weeks) I cant recognize any of the "data" she draws on to support point that escapes any sound mind. His paper is not the only bad one, but it does reflect badly on the entire composition of the volume.
