63. Ragel State Machine Compiler
Compiles FSM from regular languages into executable C code. The GPL'ed software can be used to create a parser for any language that is regular. Examples include parsing Unix mailbox files and general lexing tasks.
http://www.elude.ca/ragel/
Ragel State Machine Compiler
What is Ragel?
Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into runnable C/C++ code. Ragel state machines can not only recognize byte sequences as regular expression machines do, but can also execute code at arbitrary points in the recognition of a regular language. Ragel can also be thought of as a finite state transducer compiler where output symbols are blocks of code that get executed instead of written to the output stream. When you wish to write down a regular language you start with some simple regular language and build a bigger one using the regular language operators union concatenation kleene star intersection and subtraction . This is precisely the way you describe to Ragel how to compile your finite state machines. Ragel also understands operators that embed actions into machines and operators that control any non-determinism in machines.
What makes Ragel unique?
Ragel FSMs are closed under all of Ragel's regular language, action specification and priority assignment operators. This property allows arbitrary regular languages to be described. Complexity is limited only by available processing resources. For example, you can make one machine that picks out specially formatted comments in C code, another machine that builds a list all function declarations and a third that identifies string constants then "or" them all together to make a single machine that performs all of these tasks concurrently and independently on one pass of the input.

    Start-up aims to simplify XML
Last modified: July 24, 2003, 12:53 PM PDT By Martin LaMonica
    Staff Writer, CNET News.com
Start-up Clear Methods believes programming with XML needs to be simplifiedand it hopes its software, designed with that in mind, will win over converts. The Cambridge, Mass., upstart created a programming language called Water that's designed specifically for handling XML (Extensible Markup Language) data. With Water, Clear Methods has built what it calls a general-purpose language that can be used to replace the numerous languages programmers need to master in order to work with Web services. "People should learn one concept and apply it to all their different needs and avoid having to learn all these special-purpose languages," said Michael Plusch, CEO of Clear Methods. The venture-funded company, founded in 2001, announced this week that it has updated Steam, the software that needs to be installed on computers in order to run XML applications written with Water. Version 3.1 of Steam simplifies database access and allows companies to distribute portions of Water programs across different machines on a network, including different servers or desktop PCs, according to the company.

Originally comprising Disciplines in the School of Humanities, since 1995 the Department of Languages ( French Italian Modern Greek , and Spanish ) provides courses catering for a variety of student needs and interests. With the establishment in 1997 of a Diploma in Language , students enrolled in other degree courses are now able to access our language offerings in order to make their qualifications more flexible. Language teaching in the Department is supported by a modern, well-equipped computer laboratory that provides excellent facilities for computer assisted language learning. The members of the Department are active in a wide range of research areas. There are two streams of students in each of the Department's language areas. One is for those who are beginners and the other for those who enter with a Year-12 (or equivalent) level of proficiency in the language. Language study is related to the cultural context of the main geographical areas where the language is spoken and, particularly at first-year level for the beginners stream, teaching is designed to lead students as quickly as possible to understand and speak the language with fluency. In the second and third years of a major, the range of material covers many aspects of contemporary society and of the past society and culture associated with the language. News article about using Polynesian languages in French Polynesian courts.
    http://www.hellopacific.com/news/general/news/2003/05/13/f.html
Demanding Polynesian languages in the courts
    May 13, 2003
Many Tahitians before the courts find it difficult to argue their case in the French language.
The Administrative Tribunal in the capital, Papeete has ruled that Polynesian languages can be used before the civil courts, and an interpreters' service should be provided to all people who want to use their own language.
The debate has started - who'll pay for such a service? Tahitian lawyer, Stanley Cross, explained the importance of using indigenous language in special court appearances in Tahiti and said Polynesians have not yet mastered the French language.
"At the level of civil courts, there is no obligation for the court to provide an interpreter. In order to fill this gap, the Territorial Assembly here in French Polynesia discussed a proposal that was lodged by the independence party Tavini Huiraatira," Cross said. "I myself drafted the proposal put before the Assembly, to officially recognise the use of Polynesian languages before the civil courts in French Polynesia, and provide access to an interpreter for free, if the person before the court so desires."
"You know in French Polynesia, you have the Tahitian language, the Marquesan language, the Tuamotu language, the Mangarevan language and the language of the Austral Islands - so five languages in all," he added. "You have this social reality in French Polynesia - to this day, there are Polynesians who haven't mastered the French language. There are people who don't write or speak the French language. So if you're talking about legality, about equality before the courts, it can only work if people before the courts can write in their own language. "
