Python is often compared to other languages. Here's a sampling of what's been written, by people biased in various directions.
General
New: Lutz Prechelt wrote "An Empirical Comparison of C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, Rexx, and Tcl for a Search/String-Processing Program in which he compares productivity and program performance for 80 different implementations of the same requirements, in 7 languages. John Ousterhout's white paper Scripting: Higher Level Programming for the 21st Century explains why scripting languages are so successful. it is biased towards Tcl, but the argument works for Python just as well. Guido van Rossum wrote an essay on Comparing Python to Other Languages Keith Waclena has produced an evaluation of various free programming languages . It conveys the practical considerations in making such a comparison, as well as discussing the relative merits of the various languages.

Abstract
This paper describes two languages designed to express security policies. The Keynote language is a general way of expressing almost any kind of policies in a form that can be used to automatically test conditions expressed in the same format to see if they conform to the policy. Security Policy Specification Language (SPSL) is a more limited language designed for communications security policies. It is easily usable to implement firewall rules or to control IPSEC connections.

This paper describes two policy specification languages, Keynote and Security Policy Specification Language (SPSL). Both languages are first described; their syntax, expressiveness and usage domain are studied. Then the two languages are compared, and their similarities and differences described. Finally some conclusions are made about the suitability of each language for different purposes.

The Software Process Improvement Network is comprised of individuals who want to improve software engineering practice. The individuals are organized into regional groups called "SPINs" that meet and share their experiences initiating and sustaining software process improvement programs. They meet annually at the Software Engineering Process Group (SEPG) Conference , which is co-sponsored by the Software Engineering Institute and a regional SPIN. Edward V. Berard , the Chief Technology Officer at The Object Agency, has spoken at various SPINs since the mid 1990s. Some of his more recent presentations are listed below.

    GUIDELINES FOR KITESURFING
    Airspace within five miles of an international airport is controlled by the Federal Aviation Regulations. All kitesurfers should get a copy of Federal Aviation Regulation 101. a printout of the regulation can be obtained from the FAA website: www.faa.gov . Kitesurfers intending to kitesurf within these areas will have to comply with FAR 101 at all times. In particular FAR regulation 101.1 paragraph 2 which states that no-one may operate a kite weighing more than 5 pounds and FAR 101.7 which states that you may not fly your kite in a manner which is hazardous to persons or property.
    Maintain a 200 ft clear zone around all divers.
