School of General Studies
The School of General Studies (SGS) is designed for students who need help in strengthening their basic skills while they take the required freshman-year coursework in English, mathematics, and social and laboratory sciences. Through the combination of a prescribed curriculum, small classes, and low student-teacher ratio, students follow a program that fits their academic and career goals. SGS faculty provide advice and participate in a "House Plan" in which faculty members share information on each student's progress. also in this section: class entrance requirements
tuition and fees

sample tracks

The school not only helps SGS students excel at college work, but also allows them to consider several different areas of study before selecting a major. Although the School of General Studies does not confer degrees, students are eligible to be accepted as sophomores into a wide variety of university degree-granting programs after the successful completion of their first year. Furthermore, SGS courses count toward graduation in a degree-granting program. In preparation for gaining sophomore status, SGS students follow one of four curriculum tracks: arts and sciences or undecided, business, criminal justice, and health/science. Students may change their curriculum track through the winter quarter of the freshman year without falling behind.

Recognized as one of the best Russian language programs in the world, the Middlebury College Russian School has been offering language and culture instruction in Russian in an intensive immersion setting for almost 60 years. Each June, highly motivated graduate and undergraduate students arrive at Middlebury from all over North America and abroad to immerse themselves in Russian language and culture. The student body is diverse, coming from small colleges, large universities, and from a wide range of positions in the arts, journalism, government, military, business, and non-profit organizations. The faculty, most of whom are native speakers, are experienced teachers of Russian as a foreign language. They live in the dorms, eat with the students, and are always available. The small classes at the Russian School are challenging and exciting; students apply what they learn. Whether preparing and performing a short skit, engaging in a role play or simulation, making oral presentations or a report on Russian TV news, students use Russian actively in class.
