About The Association
The Association
In the late 1970s, with the release of the report of the President's Commission on Foreign Languages and International Studies, it became clear that support for global education was inadequate. Raising the awareness of policymakers about the importance of international education became crucial not only for the survival of the profession but also for the well-being of the nation. As a result, 12 national language associations established what became the National Council for Languages and International Studies (NCLIS) to engage in public advocacy on behalf of international education.
NCLIS now represents 60 national and regional organizations encompassing virtually all areas of the language field; the major and less- commonly taught languages, including English and English as a Second Language, bilingual education, the classics, linguistics, exchanges, research, technology, international business education, and translation.

Directory of Language Associations Posted by Gilles Cote on August 22, 2003, 5:24 am
I have recently completed a directory of worldwide language organizations and associations which might be of interest to second language teachers or researchers. I have produced a listing of close to 250 items. All of organizations listed have a presence on the web and I have provided a link to each of their web sites. I have also provided contact information whenever this was available. The directory is online at http://caslt.org/research/association_lang.htm with an alphabetical listing at http://caslt.org/research/lang_world_a.htm . Should you spot inaccurate contact information in the listing or should you know of organizations that have been omitted and should be included, I would appreciate hearing from you.
