Many different Indian groups lived in North America. Each groups had its own language and customs . A custom is the special way a group of people does something. Several groups of Indians often shared the same CULTURE. A culture is the way of life of a group of people. Every group of people, including yours, has a culture. The language you speak, the clothes you wear, the food you eat, and the religion you believe in are all part of your culture. Indian groups that shared the same culture had the same way of finding food and building houses. They depended on the same natural resources and used them in the same way. For example, the Plains Indians shared the same land, dressed the same way, spoke the same language, hunted for food, and practiced religion in the same way. That is why they are considered to be their own culture group. Tomás and Marina recently selected a religiously affiliated day care center that would care for their 6- month-old son and their 2-year-old daughter. Before deciding on the center, Tomás and Marina visited the center and met with the director, received a handbook on the center's guidelines and policies, discussed the sliding fee schedule, and even met the two lead caregivers who were to be responsible for their children. After the visit, they felt confident that the physically attractive day care center they had chosen would be a good setting for their two children. Still, they wondered if there was anything else they should know about the day care center before leaving their children with virtual strangers.
Unfortunately, Tomás and Marina's experience with English-only language policies in early care is hardly rare. In another nearby early childhood program, which also serves a large Latino immigrant community, the educational coordinator intentionally places new children, whose home language is other than English, with teachers and paraprofessionals who do not speak the child's language. Although the center staff is very diverse and is fairly representative of the ethnic and language groups it serves, the director and most of the teachers believe that placing a child with a caregiver who can speak the child's language would encourage the child's dependency on the home language and slow down the acquisition of English.

Native Languages of the Americas: Cree
Language: Cree is an Algonquian language spoken by more than 45,000 people across southern Canada and into Montana. There are five major Cree dialects Western/Plains Cree, Northern/Woodlands Cree, Central/Swampy Cree, Moose Cree, and Eastern Cree. Some linguists consider these distinct languages, but they are largely mutually intelligible. The most divergent is Eastern Cree, which some consider a closer relative to the Innu languages Montagnais and Naskapi than to the other Cree dialectsthen again, others consider Montagnais, Naskapi, and/or Attikamekw to be dialects of Cree themselves. This lack of linguistic consensus reveals the remarkable diversification of the Cree language. In general, Cree people can understand the dialects of communities closest to them, but not those further away though a Swampy Cree may understand both a Western Cree and an Eastern Cree, they might have trouble understanding each other, and only the East Cree speaker would have hope of understanding Montagnais. All five Cree dialects (though not Atikamekw or the Innu languages) are written in a unique syllabary which uses shapes to represent consonants and rotates them in the Four Directions to represent vowels. (It is a common belief that missionaries invented this syllabary, but that is highly unlikely

Literature, Language and Culture Introduction to Literature, Language and Culture By John McRae Since English literature became a university degree subject, a little over 120 years ago, literature and language have been taught separately, rather than as closely related subjects. Equally, English language teaching has tended since the 1950s and 1960s to focus on more practical levels of language use. But the 1990s brought a shift towards more integrated teaching approaches, drawing on widely different types of ‘texts’ and cultural forms, as a means of understanding how language works in diverse contexts and cultures. These English language learners (ELLs) are faced with the burden of mastering the academic content of their classes at the same time they are developing language skills.
INTEGRATING LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN SOCIAL STUDIES
THE ACADEMIC LANGUAGE OF AMERICAN HISTORY
A prerequisite to developing integrated language and content lessons in social studies is an understanding of the academic language competencies needed to function successfully in the social studies classroom. In this project, academic language was defined broadly to include semantic and syntactic features (e.g., vocabulary items, sentence structure, transition markers, cohesive ties) and language functions and tasks that are part of social studies classroom routines (e.g., defining terms, explaining historical significance, reading expository text, preparing research reports). The project has identified key social studies terms and tasks that need to be mastered by students as part of an American history course.

Interesting but not voluminous literature on variation in animal general intelligence. See:
1) Anderson, B. (2000). The g factor in non-human animals
These studies show that there are individual differences in the ability to solve novel problemsproblems requiring the ability to "combine non-contiguously learned behaviors into a solution for a novel problem" (p. 81). Problems include finding a route to a goal box when the previously learned route is blocked and combining knowledge obtained from more than one source to solve a novel problem. While simple learning tasks do not correlate with each other or show stable individual differences, individual differences on these tasks are stable and correlated with other conceptually similar tests to make up an animal g factor. Anderson extracted a single factor from three such tests and showed performance on the tests was positively correlated with brain size (also known to correlate with general intelligence in humans).
2) There are also individual differences in solving novel problems among ravens: Heinrich, B. (2000). Testing insight in ravens.

Linguistics at U.C. Berkeley has a rich and distinguished tradition. From 1901 to 1906, the first Linguistics program operated under the direction of the classical philologist Benjamin Ide Wheeler, who was also President of the University of California. After that time most linguistic work at U.C. Berkeley was done through the Anthropology Department where, under the direction of the noted anthropological linguist Alfred Kroeber, extensive efforts were devoted to the recording and describing of unwritten languages, especially American Indian languages spoken in California and elsewhere in the United States.
The current Department of Linguistics continues these traditions alongside other areas of expertise that have developed since. Constituted in 1953 by the distinguished Sanskrit and Dravidian scholar Murray Emeneau, and subsequently chaired by Mary Haas, a leading scholar of both American Indian and Asian languages, there are at present 15 faculty and 6 retired professors associated with the department. With the approximately 50 graduate students in progress toward the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, Berkeley linguists remain committed to the empirical, historical, and theoretical study of linguistic structure within a broad linguistic, cultural, and cognitive context.

Brazilian Culture Local Events Brazilian News Useful Links ... Brazilian Culture / THE CULTURE OF THE INDIAN PEOPLE There are approximately 200 Indian societies living in Brazil; 200 cultures with distinct languages, religions and social organizations. This represents one of the greatest cultural treasures of the world, attracting hundreds of specialists, mainly linguists and anthropologists. This treasure, however, is under constant threat mainly due to conflicts over land and the advance of non-indians on Indian territories. The Federal Constitution declares the inalienable right of the Indians to possess the land which they occupy, but, due to the vast spread of Brazilian territory and the shortage of resources, the government agency in charge of defending and guaranteeing the interests and the rights of the Indians, FUNAI (Fundacao Nacional do Indio - National Indian Foundation) has a difficult time enforcing the law, guaranteeing adequate health care and education, and implementing the projects for productive activities. The material culture of the Indian people expresses to the other sectors of society, their vision of the universe and, almost always, carries out a utilitarian function in the daily routine of the tribal community. But this vision has been influenced by a variety of pressures to which the Brazilian indians are submitted, for their land is coveted by the local non-indians due to its rich flora, fauna and undersoil.
