LANDSLIDES !! AN ALERT "TALK STORY"
Acknowledgments: The images used in this "talk story" are taken from the Natural Hazards Image Archive prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey
The images contained in the Natural Hazards Image Archive are formatted and presented by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Data Distribution Laboratory (JPL-DDL) for general use. All of the images are from an United States Geological Survey Photo CD-ROM, and represent a sampling of the U.S.G.S. photo archive collection. Many of the images are priceless from both an historical as well as geological standpoint. The Natural Hazards Image Archive is part of an on-going effort by the JPL-DDL to create a user-friendly archive of U.S. government scientific CD-ROM information. To that end, the JPL-DDL has developed a Government CD-ROM archive that lists the contents of over 400 U.S. Government science CD-ROMs. Another government entity that has extensive archives of natural hazard photos is the NOAA/NGDC, which can be reached at NOAA Natural Hazards . If you have an intense interest in seeing more photos of natural hazards and other geologic information, you may want to check these sites out now. Otherwise, please feel free to continue reading. MANILA, Philippines The United States has offered military transport helicopters to assist rescue efforts after landslides devastated parts of the central and southern Philippines. At least 89 people have been killed and 23 listed as injured, Gen. Melchor Rosales, executive director of the National Disaster Coordination Center, told CNN on Monday. But 125 people are still missing and feared dead from the torrents of mud, rocks and dirt, he added. Blocked roads, downed power and telephone lines have hindered rescue crews who have been battling rain and mud with shovels and bare hands in the search for survivors. The landslides were triggered by six days of pounding rains and winds in six provinces near the Pacific Ocean late Friday to early Saturday with the majority of the casualties and missing in the southern Leyte province. Mindanao island was also hit hard.

*Mount Awu in Indonesia continues to show indications that it will
erupt. There is continuous smoke and small stones being thrown up to 2,000 metres high. Earthquakes are also happening continuously, although they are still not very strong. As of mid-morning on Tuesday, 20,000 villagers had been evacuated and the island's airport had been closed. One of Indonesia's most famous volcanoes , Mount Bromo, on the main island of Java, also began belching smoke 1.8 miles into the air on Tuesday, prompting officials to raise the alert level there.

....a rapid downslope movement of rock or soil as a more or less coherent mass. Landslides are characterized by a slippage plane that is clearly defined. A landslide may turn into a flow at the bottom as the blocks become tumbled over. Usually the material moves as a large block known as a slump block. The scar above a landslide is easily visible. Steep slopes of shale are susceptible to landslide activity. But landslides occur everywhere on large or small scales. They can occur after earthquakes or removal of part of the slope due to construction, particularly in the construction of roads.

Pore Water Pressure is the key to monitoring landslides. Pore water pressure is the pressure that develops as water fills in the pore spaces inbetween particles. Shear strength, a resisting force, decreases and the weight, a driving force, increases. The safety factor becomes less than one and a movement becomes possible.

LANDSLIDES triggered by earthquakes
Definition: What are landslides?
Causes of landslides
A landslide is a general term given to describe the various forms of mass movement. Many definitions have been applied to the term and they all vary depending on the objective of the author.
For example, Cruden (1991)defined a landslide as,
"a movement of a mass of rock, earth or debris down a slope"
However, this rather vague interpretation was confronted by a more detailed approach from Hutchinson (1988). He suggested that slope movements were categorised into individual groups based on the mechanism of failure. Hutchinson classed them as: fall, topple, i)rotational and ii)translational slides, lateral spreading, flow and complex.
The common features of landslides according to the above criteria, are seen as slope failures, mudflows, rock falls and rock slides to name a few.
1970 earthquake induced rock and snow avalanche on Mt.Huascaran, Peru Landslides are not individual events. they often occur in conjunction with at least one other contributary factor. There are a countless number of factors involved in the landslide process and in respect, landslides can be the cause of other secondary effects.
Some triggering factors of landslides are due to climatic, tectonic and human reasons. In the event of a rainstorm in tropical regions, heavy rainfall can induce slope failure and snowmelt in cold climates can also cause landslides.

Hawaiian landslides have been catastrophic
Volcanic activity and gentle erosion have not been the only forces to shape the Hawaiian islands. Landslide debris has now been mapped off of all the islands. Enormous amounts of material have traveled great distances, indicating that the slides were truly catastrophic. The Nuuanu and Wailau landslides, shown in the map, tore the volcanoes forming eastern Oahu and Molokai, respectively, in half, and deposited blocks large enough to have been given names as seamounts. Tsunamis generated during these slides would have been devastating around the entire Pacific Basin.

The discussions below are paraphrased from abstracts of papers published by the Submarine Volcanism group.

Parts of Wyoming have some of the highest landslide densities in the United States. Every year landslides occur in Wyoming, with some causing significant damage or disruption to daily activities These web pages have been generated for two reasons. The first of these is to increase awareness of landslides in Wyoming. The second is to provide citizens with a means to access current landslide data for the state. The landslides were mapped over a 15-year period by the Geologic Hazards Section of the Wyoming State Geological Survey. Over 850 7.5-minute quadrangles have been mapped for landslides. The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) and the Water Resources Data System (WRDS) are in the process of generating coverages of them for Wyoming.
