Feng Shui Landscaping
Dear 168 Feng Shui Advisors: I am at a loss to find a source of informationjust fundamental, basic principalsregarding the use of Feng Shui in planning landscaping and plant installations for a new home (or any home!). Any suggestions? I'm needing to know sizes of plant material, which sides of the house are best for trees vs. bushes vs. expanses of grass, and where to situate other materials like rocks, etc. Thanks for your help! Feng Shui is the study of the "built" environment and while feng shui does look at the larger environment surrounding the structure, there are no hard and fast rules about the landscaping. Feng Shui is primarily focused on the Qi within a structure, as that is what has the most direct effect on the people. When it comes to the outside environment, the main points of concern is that the landscaping is beautiful and in balance with the rest of the environment. Living in a beautiful environment is much more supportive than living in an environment that is an eyesore. You can tell the Qi of a neighborhood or area by how green and glossy the trees and plants are. Some general rules: Pathways should flow like a meandering stream not a straight road. As to trees, they are fine as long as they are not placed in a direct line with any entrances, especially the main entrance. Try to keep a balance of yin and yang (dark and light) when thinking of the trees. Avoid trees that will completely block the light. Too much of anything is not good. Again, balance is the key. Shrubbery is okay as long as it is kept neat and prevented from overgrowing. Trees and shrubbery can be used to block harsh Qi such as strong winds. Grass does not pose any problems. Strive for beauty.

Prepared by:
M.A. Powell, Extension Specialist, Horticultural Science and T.M. Disy, Information Specialist Published by: North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service Publication Number: AG-508-1 Last Electronic Revision: March 1996 (JWM) Water is one of our most valuable natural resources. Most of the time, however, we take it for granted and use it in abundance until drought sets in and we areforced to conserve. To protect our water supplyfrom extreme shortages, we should strive daily to conserve water. This publication introduces some basic ideas that will help you conserve water and protect the environment while meeting all of your landscape needs. One area where water use can be decreased without sacrificing beauty or function is in landscaping. The term xeriscaping means landscaping for efficient water use. By using plants that are drought tolerant and by knowing what amount of water is right for your landscape and when to water, you can use much less water. Beyond conserving water, protecting water supplies from pollutants that may come from landscaping is also important.

Introduction Basic Concepts Additional Resources webofcreation@lstc.edu The two main issues concerning landscaping are
1) encouraging people to plant natural landscapes which allows bridge habitats for animals, birds and butterflies.
2) encouraging people to stop using pesticides and find toxic-free alternatives.
In recent years, a new look in landscaping, commonly known as natural landscaping, has been gaining enthusiastic acceptance across the country. Natural landscaping is an aesthetically exciting, ever-changing tapestry of hardy, primarily native plantings well adapted to the local climate and soil. It provides a cost effective alternative to conventional turf grass lawns. Natural landscaping minimizes the environmentally detrimental effects of pesticides and fertilizers, as well as the noise pollution, and the emission of air-polluting substances from lawn-maintenance equipment. It virtually eliminates the need to use water for irrigation as is required for turf grass lawns. While not maintenance free, natural landscaping requires less time and money for ongoing maintenance than conventional landscapes. Homeowners and developers alike are beginning to appreciate the environmental, economic and aesthetic benefits of natural landscaping. From Natural Landscaping for Public Officials: A Source Book

Landscaping is a natural and beautiful way to keep your home more comfortable and reduce your energy bills. In addition to adding aesthetic value and environmental quality to your home, a well-placed tree, shrub, or vine can deliver effective shade, act as a windbreak, and reduce overall energy bills.
climate in which you live.
Deciduous trees planted on the south and on the west will help keep your house cool in the summer and allow sun to shine in the windows in the winter.
Orientation of the house and surrounding landscaping has a large effect on energy consumption. A well-oriented, well-designed home admits low-angle winter sun to reduce heating bills; rejects overhead summer sun to reduce cooling bills; and minimizes the chill effect of winter winds. Fences, walls, other nearby buildings, and rows of trees or shrubs block or channel the wind. Bodies of water moderate temperature but increase humidity and produce glare. Trees provide shade, windbreaks, and wind channels. Pavement reflects or absorbs heat, depending on whether it is light or dark in color. Just as wearing white clothes reflects the sun's heat from your body, a white or light-colored roof will help reflect the sun's heat away from your home. This strategy works particularly well when trees are located next to the reflecting surface. Not only does the tree provide shade, it absorbs the reflected sunlight for photosynthesis. In the process, water evaporates from the tree, cooling the air around the house.

Associate Professor - Tropical Ornamentals, and Associate Professor - Ornamental Horticulture, Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, IFAS, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. Landscape Principles to Attract Birds Provide shelter to entice birds into your yard and to protect them from the elements or predators. Select a variety of plants which offer a consistent supply of food over an extended period of time. Select plants that flower or fruit during the spring migrations and attract insects. Insects, in turn, attract insectivorous birds. In some areas in southern Florida, the flowering gumbo-limbo (Bursera simaruba) attracts large numbers of warblers in their spring breeding plumage as they migrate northward.

Landscaping Burglars Hate
Strategies, plants, and devices that enhance security A man strolls down your front walkway in broad daylight and knocks on the door. Although your neighbors notice him, they aren't suspicious. When nobody answers, he walks around to the side gate and lets himself into the enclosed rear garden, where he enters your house by way of a forced back door, window, or garage. Once inside, he heads for your bedroom to rifle through drawers, closets, and mattresses in search of jewelry, cash, and other valuables. A pro burglar will be out of therewith the lootin less than 10 minutes. According to national statistics, burglary and theft are the two major crimes you're most likely to experience. Note: In most states, when anything is taken from inside your house, the crime is classified as a burglary (usually charged as a felony); when anything is taken from outside your house, it is a theft (often charged as a misdemeanor). Fortunately there are a number of steps you can take to make your yard a more formidable deterrent to criminal intentions. In evaluating security needs, it's helpful to think of your landscape in terms of public and private areas. Protect the public part of your yard Your main entryand probably your whole front yardis considered a semipublic area, if only because the law allows anyone free passage from the street to your front door unless you've posted your property with No Trespassing signs.
