Native species are those that occur in the region in which they evolved. Plants evolve over geologic time in response to physical and biotic processes characteristic of a region: the climate, soils, timing of rainfall, drought, and frost; and interactions with the other species inhabiting the local community. Thus native plants possess certain traits that make them uniquely adapted to local conditions, providing a practical and ecologically valuable alternative for landscaping, conservation and restoration projects, and as livestock forage. In addition, native plants can match the finest cultivated plants in beauty, while often surpassing non-natives in ruggedness and resistance to drought, insects and disease. The native plants list identifies native plant species currently recommended by the Virginia Native Plant Society, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, and other project cooperators for use in horticulture, land management, conservation, and restoration projects in Virginia. The list provides a selection of plant choices adapted to growing conditions in Virginia, focusing on those native species currently or potentially available in the nursery trade. For the most part, relatively common species have been included on the list, although a few less common species were also included due to their establishment in the trade and the general stability of their habitat in Virginia. Rare species were left off the list in order to protect the genetic integrity of naturally occurring populations of rare species and avoid the collection of rare plants.

Tips
Landscaping
  • Maintain a lawn height of 2 1/2 to 3 inches to help protect the roots from heat stress and reduce the loss of moisture to evaporation. Avoid planting turf in areas that are difficult to irrigate properly such as steep inclines and isolated strips along sidewalks and driveways. Aerate clay soils at least once a year to help the soil retain moisture. Promote deep root growth through a combination of proper watering, aerating, appropriate fertilization, thatch (grass clippings) control, and attention to lawn height. A lawn with deep roots requires less water and is more resistant to drought and disease. Mulch around plants, bushes and trees to help the soil retain moisture, discourage the growth of weeds, and provide essential nutrients. Plant in the spring or fall, when watering requirements are lower.

Want to reduce your greenhouse heat?
Simply mix Hy-Tech Insulating Ceramics into a mixture of whiting and cement which makes a removable whitewash that will reduce the interior temperature dramatically without reducing the light! In the winter the mixture is easily removed allowing more heat to enter.
The whiting alone makes a terrific all natural whitewash for spraying on fruits and vegtables and acts as a sun block and insect repellant.

Landscaping your yard
Here are a few ideas for landscaping your yard inexpensively.
For many of us, buying a home is an immense step in our lives. Not only the financial aspect, but also the decorating and renovating can be a time consuming, costly venture. The exterior part of the home usually holds less importance than the rest of the home. Decorating the exterior part can be done inexpensively with a bit of creativity and time. Firstly, flowers are a great way to improve the look of your yard and home. Flower boxes can be purchased fairly cheap. If you shop around at garage sales they can be picked up for a very good price. Just slap a coat of paint on the used flower boxes and they are good as new. Flower boxes add beauty to the exterior of your home when placed below the windows. The hooks are available at most hardware stores. bodyOffer(30381) Another way to present your flowers is with hanging baskets. These look very nice at the entryways, hanging from the soffit beside the doorways. Planter boxes and flower boxes are great in any part of the yard. They look nice on the front steps or on the deck if you have one. If you have the room in your yard (front or back) flowerbeds can be built inexpensively. Garden ties can be purchased from most hardware stores; they usually come in an olive or terra cotta color. But you can paint them whichever color you prefer. These garden ties are great for building a tiered flowerbed, low in the front and a higher box in the rear. Whatever you choose it can be done fairly easily. Garden ties are also useful for building boxes around trees, about two tiers high is sufficient.

CSI Numbers:

DEFINITION:
"Energy conserving landscapes" reduce energy costs in a home during summer and winter. Ideally, the energy conserving landscape is also a water conserving landscape.
CONSIDERATIONS:
It is possible to achieve as much as a 30% reduction in cooling and heating costs through careful landscape planning. Landscaping can reduce direct sun from striking and heating up building surfaces. It can prevent reflected light carrying heat into a house from the ground or other surfaces. By reducing wind velocity, an energy conserving landscape slows air leakage in a house. Additionally, the shade created by trees and the effect of grass and shrubs will reduce air temperatures adjoining the house and provide evaporative cooling. The use of dense tree and shrub plantings on the west and northwest sides of a home will block the summer setting sun. This is the most effective landscape planting strategy. Additional considerations include the use of deciduous trees on the south side of the house that will admit summer sun; evergreen plantings on the north side will slow cold winter winds; constructing a natural planted channel to funnel summer cooling breezes into the house.

79. Landscape Contractors & Designers Perfect Cut Landscaping Located In Windsor, On
Paving stones, retaining walls, and landscaping services.
http://wnd-biz.com/perfectcutlandscaping/
A rchitects and Interior Designers are constantly challenged with demands for something new and different for flooring inside malls, showrooms and public areas of buildings that will satisfy a wide variety of criteria. The flooring material must have a different but pleasing texture or it must create an outdoor feeling inside or it must be as easily maintained as extant flooring but cost less or . . . the criteria are unlimited depending on the imagination of the designer.
I nterlocking Paving Stone Systems have fully demonstrated their diversity in a number of interior applications. In every case a different but pleasing texture was created that is easily maintained and costs the same or less than conventional techniques.
S ince its introduction in 1993, Brussels Block, has evolved into a dynamic but simple paver system. With the addition of the Half Stone and the Quarter Stone, it gives the designer a greater range of design while maintaining that ever important classic natural stone appearance. With its antiqued appearance, accented by the three unique Brussels Block stories, that true old cobblestone look creates the most exquisite stone terrace, courtyard, or winding pathway offering an attractive transition from house to garden. Brussels Block is the perfect choice.
R etaining walls built with Pisa Stone lean at the proper angle to assure stability. This slope (set-back) is formed automatically by the patented off-set interlock. Vertical free standing walls are built by reversing every other course of Pisa Stone, thus eliminating the lean (set back).

Windbreaks for Winter Savings
In a windy site, a windbreak or shelterbelt planting can account for up to 50 percent wind reduction with a 20 to 40 percent reduction in heating fuel consumption. In a calmer spot, wind barriers can still reduce fuel use by 10 percent or more. A wind barrier that permits 50 to 60 percent wind penetration is more effective than a solid barrier because it provides a larger area of protection on the leeward side. Evergreen conifers (needle-leaf trees) are a perfect barrier to winter winds. Location.
