    INTRODUCTION
Among the fondest and most memorable moments of childhood are the discoveries of songbirds nesting in the back yard. The distinctive, mud-lined nests of robins and their beautiful blue eggs captivate people of all ages. Likewise, the nesting activities of house wrens, cardinals, chickadees, and other common birds can stimulate a lifelong interest in nature. As people learn to enjoy the beauty of birdlife around their home, they may wish to improve the "habitat" in their yard so that more birds will visit their property. You can attract birds by placing bird feeders, nest boxes, and bird baths in your yard, and by planting a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers. These can provide good nesting sites, winter shelter, places to hide from predators, and natural food supplies that are available year-round. Back to TABLE OF CONTENTS

Some like a perfectly manicured lawn with every shrub and flower carefully placed. Others prefer a backyard habitat-like area with tangled vines, meandering paths, and hidden garden rooms. Designing the home landscape is a daunting proposition, both in new homes that have to be done from scratch, and in older homes where the previous owner may have put in shrubs and other plant material that has grown too big or has not been maintained properly.
There are basically two areas to consider when contemplating making changes to the landscape. The front yard and the back yard are two completely different animals. The front yard is the part of the house that is seen by the public. We have all fallen in love with houses that are beautifully landscaped and have heard horror stories about houses with poor landscape plans that sit on the market for years. Front yard landscaping plays a critical role in the value of the house overall, and as such, care should be taken to make it inviting, but without too much maintenance or fuss. The back yard is a completely different story, however. This is where you can let your imagination fly, putting in whatever features you like personally. It is your own private retreat, and should be a fun, relaxing place for friends and family.

A well-designed landscape is a pleasure to the family, enhances a community and adds to the property's resale value. Landscape design involves much more than placing trees, shrubs and other plants on the property. It is an art which deals with conscious arrangement or organization of outdoor space for human satisfaction and enjoyment. Some of its major goals include:
    • Organizing and developing the site for maximum use and pleasure.
    • Creating a visual relationship between the house and the site.
    • Reducing landscape maintenance to a practical level.
Americans spend tremendous amounts of money "landscaping" their businesses, homes, streets, parks, schools, etc. Much of this money is wasted, however, because of little or no planning. People cannot understand how to landscape until they know why they landscape. There are several reasons why people "landscape": some think it improves the appearance of their place; others like to grow plants; still others just want their place to look pretty. Too often these landscapes dominate rather than serve. Masses of plants or other materials in the landscape may take up a large portion of the space and leave little room for people. Then how does the designer arrange space so that people will find it useful, beautiful, meaningful and functional? His methods include:

LANDSCAPING FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION William C. Welch
    Extension Landscape Horticulturist
Texas Agricultural Extension Service Although it is not possible to control temperature, wind and other weather elements, certain landscape practices can modify the climate in and around homes significantly. By placing trees, shrubs, vines and landscape structures properly, the homeowner can reduce the energy required to keep homes and surrounding areas comfortable during winter and summer. If the landscaping is well done, one receives the added benefits of beauty and increased real estate values. A well planned landscape is one of the best investments a homeowner can make. Protection From the Sun Trees. Trees can reduce summer temperatures significantly. Shading the roof of a house from the afternoon sun by large trees can reduce temperatures inside the home by as much as 8 to 10 degrees F. Deciduous trees (those that lose their leaves in winter) provide summer shade, then drop their leaves in the fall, which allows the warmth of the sun to filter through their bare branches in winter and help warm the home. If a home can be situated to take advantage of shade from existing trees on south and west exposures, energy expended to cool the house can be reduced considerable. To shade the roof or a wall of a one-story home, trees which will reach a medium to large size should be selected and placed 15 to 20 feet from the side or 12 to 15 feet from the corner of the structure. To be most effective, the canopy of the tree should extend over the roof. Smaller trees such as crape myrtles and redbuds can be planted closer to the house and used for shading walls and window areas. Since they are deciduous, they will provide shade during the summer and allow light and sun to penetrate during the winter season.

    http://content.realestateabc.com/homeselling/exterior2.htm
Getting the House Ready to Sell Landscaping Is your landscaping at least average for the neighborhood? If it is not, buy a few bushes and plant them. Do not put in trees. Mature trees are expensive, and you will not get back your investment. Also, immature trees do not really add much to the appearance value of the home. If you have an area for flowers, buy mature colorful flowers and plant them. They add a splash of vibrancy and color, creating a favorable first impression. Do not buy bulbs or seeds and plant them. They will not mature fast enough to create the desired effect and you certainly don’t want a patch of brown earth for homebuyers to view. Your lawn should be evenly cut, freshly edged, well watered, and free of brown spots. If there are problems with your lawn, you should probably take care of them before working on the inside of your home. This is because certain areas may need to be re-sod, and you want to give it a chance to grow so that re-sod areas are not immediately apparent. Plus, you might want to give fertilizer enough time to be effective. Always rake up loose leaves and grass cuttings.
